P2i is a nanotechnology development company that works with manufacturers to produce liquid repellent nano-coating protection to products for the electronics, lifestyle, life sciences, filtration and Energy, and military and institutional sectors. [1]

Contents

The company was established in 2004 to commercialize technologies developed by the UK MoD's Defense Science and Technology Laboratory. [2] In 2010 the company acquired Surface Innovations Limited, adding new technologies such as antimicrobial, super hydrophilic and protein resistance coatings. [3]

In addition to headquarters in the United Kingdom, [4] P2i has a processing facility in the United States, [5] offices in Shenzhen, China [6] and Taipei City, Taiwan, [7] and representation in Korea. [8] As of February 2016 P2i had deployed hundreds of its nano-coating systems globally, including factories in Brazil, Argentina, USA, China, India, Japan, Switzerland, Germany and the UK. [9]

Technology

Ion-mask water droplet material surface.jpg

The treatment decreases the surface energy of objects by adding a perfluorinated carbon polymer coating onto exposed surfaces. The coating reduces the disruption of intermolecular bonds within a liquid. [10] Liquids thus tend to bead up instead of penetrating or absorbing into the object. [11] [12]

The treatment process coats objects using a pulsed plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition apparatus at room temperature. [13] [14] The coating is introduced as a vapor and ionized. This deposits a polymerized layer of the plasma monomers, which binds covalently and durably to the object's surface. The mild temperature and pressure conditions of this process permit a broad variety of items and materials to be treated. [15] Occurring at low pressure, the coating penetrates complex three-dimensional objects, protecting it internally and externally in the same process. The coating, being very thin, does not alter the look or feel of solid objects or the vapor porosity of fabrics. [16]

History

P2i's process is based on the research and development work of Stephen Coulson and Jas Pal Badyal at Durham University. [17] [18] Coulson's work was funded by the United Kingdom's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) which aimed to protect clothing from water and other liquids while maximizing comfort. P2i Ltd was established as a stand-alone company in 2004, as the first DSTL technology spin-out managed by Ploughshare Innovations (the DSTL's technology transfer company). [19]

On 13 July 2010, P2i announced the acquisition of Surface Innovations Ltd, a UK-based technology company with several functional nano-coating patent families in areas such as anti-bacterial resistance and liquid attracting (super wettable). [20]

Applications and brands

P2i's technology is currently applied in the fields of electronics, lifestyle, life sciences, filtration and energy, and military and institutional sectors. [21] For consumer-facing products, the company has developed sector-specific trademarked brands. The ion-mask brand [22] was used for lifestyle products such as footwear, outdoor clothing, and accessories like gloves and headwear. ion-mask products products were available from several international footwear companies, including Timberland, [23] Nike, [24] Adidas Golf, [25] Hi-Tec, [26] Magnum Boots, [27] Van Dal, [28] Teva, [29] and K-Swiss. [30]

P2i's nano-coating technology [31] is utilized in the consumer electronics sector, with significant application in the hearing aid industry, where the company claims its coating is applied to 70% of the world's hearing devices. [32] In 2013, P2i rebranded its traditional hydrophobic layer technology, previously known as Aridion, to "Splash-proof." [33]

P2i has established partnerships with smartphone manufacturers such as Motorola and Huawei, [34] as well as other top brands in the industry, including prominent Chinese manufacturers. [35] In 2019, P2i had the capacity to treat over half a billion phones with its technology. [36]

Paint is a material or mixture that, after applied to a solid material and allowed to dry, adds a film-like layer. As art, this is used to create an image, known as a painting. Paint can be made in many colors and types. Most paints are either oil-based or water-based, and each has distinct characteristics.

Plating is a finishing process in which a metal is deposited on a surface. Plating has been done for hundreds of years; it is also critical for modern technology. Plating is used to decorate objects, for corrosion inhibition, to improve solderability, to harden, to improve wearability, to reduce friction, to improve paint adhesion, to alter conductivity, to improve IR reflectivity, for radiation shielding, and for other purposes. Jewelry typically uses plating to give a silver or gold finish.

Waterproofing is the process of making an object, person or structure waterproof or water-resistant so that it remains relatively unaffected by water or resisting the ingress of water under specified conditions. Such items may be used in wet environments or underwater to specified depths.

Durable water repellent Fabric finish

Durable water repellent, or DWR, is a coating added to fabrics at the factory to make them water-resistant (hydrophobic). Most factory-applied treatments are fluoropolymer based; these applications are quite thin and not always effective. Durable water repellents are commonly used in conjunction with waterproof breathable fabrics such as Gore-Tex to prevent the outer layer of fabric from becoming saturated with water. This saturation, called 'wetting out,' can reduce the garment's breathability and let water through. As the DWR wears off over time, re-treatment is recommended when necessary. Many spray-on and wash-in products for treatment of non-waterproof garments and re-treatment of proofed garments losing their water-repellency are available.

Nanotechnology is impacting the field of consumer goods, several products that incorporate nanomaterials are already in a variety of items; many of which people do not even realize contain nanoparticles, products with novel functions ranging from easy-to-clean to scratch-resistant. Examples of that car bumpers are made lighter, clothing is more stain repellant, sunscreen is more radiation resistant, synthetic bones are stronger, cell phone screens are lighter weight, glass packaging for drinks leads to a longer shelf-life, and balls for various sports are made more durable. Using nanotech, in the mid-term modern textiles will become "smart", through embedded "wearable electronics", such novel products have also a promising potential especially in the field of cosmetics, and has numerous potential applications in heavy industry. Nanotechnology is predicted to be a main driver of technology and business in this century and holds the promise of higher performance materials, intelligent systems and new production methods with significant impact for all aspects of society.
