PS Governor Wynyard, was a small steam ship, the first to be built in New Zealand, and was launched in 1851. [1] She was a paddle steamer schooner, built of pohutukawa, with kauri planks. In 1853 she left her Tamaki River service in Auckland and was sold in Melbourne in 1852 during the gold rush, but was soon serving as a ferry in Tasmania, until she had her primitive engines removed in 1858. She sprang a leak and became a beached wreck in 1873.
She was built at Stone & Lanford's [2] Freemans Bay yard for the builder's brother, C. J. Stone, and his partners, F. Gardiner, and Captain A. Cook. The ship was launched sideways on 24 December 1851. [3] Her two steeple engines were fed by a double tubed Lancashire boiler, built by William Bourne's foundry. The foundry tools were rudimentary and work was delayed until an American boilermaker, Mr. Brown, arrived. He had no shears, rollers, or punching machine, but made a clay mould to bend the plates and had the holes manually punched in the boiler. [4]
The vessel was towed to Wynyard pier, where the Mayor named her. An anonymous letter to the New Zealander had said she was to be named after the Governor. [5] A 1909 account said no name had been chosen, but that the governor was very pleased, so the name Governor Wynyard was chosen. [2]
Governor Wynyard made a trial trip on the Tamaki River on 10 January 1852, with one of her owners, Captain Cook, Mr. Brown being engineer. Due to his inexperience the boiler primed and he opened the safety valve, but drained too much water, so that the fire had to be damped down and water added with a bucket. [4] After the initial delay she reached 8 knots. Her exhaust steam blew into her paddle-boxes, making an explosion on every piston stroke. [2] A contemporary report said, "she makes full as much noise as speed". [6]
For her first 6 months she ran on the Tamaki River to Panmure and Ōtāhuhu, [7] [8] where some roads were not fit for carts, [9] but settlers were reported to be annoyed if she didn't wait for goods beyond departure time. [2] She then made a trial trip to Bay of Islands. [10] A later source said there was insufficient trade on the Tamaki. [2] In 1853 her paddle-boxes were removed and she sailed across the Tasman Sea to Melbourne, where she arrived on 26 August, [11] worked on a ferry to Williamstown [12] and was sold by her builder on 28 December 1852 for £2,300. [4] Several later accounts said she worked on the Yarra for many years, earning up to £60 a day. [4] However they are probably not true, as she started a Tamar River ferry service between Launceston and George Town in February 1854, owned by Benjamin Hyrons. [13] She collided with the steamer Royal Shepherd in the Tamar in 1855, [14] but was still on the George Town service in 1857, having had a major overhaul. [15] Her engines were removed in 1858, leaving her as a sailing schooner. [16] In 1899 it was said her engines had been transferred to her replacement on the ferry service, Tamar Maid. [17]
On Sunday 20 July 1873, during a voyage from Duck River to Launceston, Governor Wynyard sprang a leak and was beached as a wreck at Stanley. [18]

Kakahi was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand, serving Kakahi. It was 10.11 km (6.28 mi) north of Ōwhango and 5.27 km (3.27 mi) south of Piriaka. It formally opened on 9 November 1908. The rails were laid south of Piriaka by May 1904 and a daily ballast train was running by October, which also carried passengers. Kakahi Bridge has five spans of 44 ft (13 m) and one of 23 ft (7.0 m) supplied by G. Fraser & Sons of Auckland, which delayed construction to the south. It crosses the Kakahi Stream, which was sometimes called the Waitea River.
SS Hilonian was a general passenger and cargo steamer, built as the Triumph in 1880 at Middlesbrough for McIntyre & Co, and later fitted with refrigeration equipment and leased to Shaw Savill and the New Zealand Shipping Company. She sank and ran aground many times, the final sinking being by torpedo in 1917.
SS Rotomahana was an 1876 harbour steamer and the first iron vessel to be built in Auckland, though launched only 28 minutes ahead of another, though smaller, iron ship. Rotomahana was a name used by at least two other ships of the era, presumably because Rotomahana and its Pink and White Terraces had become better known after the Duke of Edinburgh visited in 1870.
Phoenix Foundry, often printed as Phœnix, was an engineering company in Auckland from 1861 to 1952. By 1900 it was on the verge of bankruptcy, but also Auckland's largest engineering works, supplying a wide range of goods and often leading in the design of equipment used to exploit the country's resources, such as timber and flax mills, crushers for gold ore and locomotives, pumps, cement and gas works and steamers. The foundry started with engineer, George Fraser, and a handful of employees, but grew to employ hundreds and operated under several names, including Fraser and Tinne and George Fraser & Sons Ltd.
SS Tauranga was the first coastal trading steam ship to be built in New Zealand, though a harbour steamer, Governor Wynyard, had been built at Auckland in 1851.
Turangarere was a flag station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Ruapehu District of New Zealand, in the Hautapu River valley. It was 3.05 km (1.90 mi) south of Hīhītahi and 3.91 km (2.43 mi) north of Ngaurukehu. Turangarere is part way up a 1 in 70 gradient from Mataroa to Hīhītahi, so that it is 62 m (203 ft) above Ngaurukehu and 39 m (128 ft) below Hīhītahi. The station was on a horseshoe curve, formed to avoid an even steeper gradient, by adding about 1.5 mi (2.4 km) to the route. Only a single track now remains through the former station site.

Kopua in New Zealand is now a sparsely populated area, immediately south of the border of the Manawatū-Whanganui and Hawke's Bay regions, with 150 people scattered over a 40 km2 (15 sq mi) meshblock. For two years it briefly flourished as a village, centred on a railway station on the Palmerston North–Gisborne line, opened on 25 January 1878, when it became the southern terminus of the line from Napier and Spit. Building to the south was delayed by the need to erect 3 large viaducts over the Manawatū River and its tributaries, so the extension to Makotuku didn't open until 9 August 1880. Kopua then declined until the station closed on 8 May 1977. Only a single line now passes through the station site and there are remnants of cattle yards.
