Pablo Ablanedo is an Argentine-born jazz composer, pianist, and teacher based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is known for incorporating elements of traditional Argentine music and contemporary classical into a jazz-influenced style. [1] [2]

Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States. It originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and developed from roots in blues and ragtime. Jazz is seen by many as "America's classical music". Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression. It then emerged in the form of independent traditional and popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African-American and European-American musical parentage with a performance orientation. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime, as well as European military band music. Intellectuals around the world have hailed jazz as "one of America's original art forms".

Ablanedo is the leader of the Pablo Ablanedo Octet and has released three critically acclaimed records on Fresh Sound Records, as well as a 2013 release on Creative Nation Music. [3] His work was commissioned by Paquito D'Rivera for the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (Northern German Broadcasting) Big Band. [4] He is a teacher and the author of Suite of Mirrors: A Collection of Mirror Pieces for the Beginning Pianist (2015). [5]

Fresh Sound, or Fresh Sound New Talent, is a jazz record label established in Barcelona, Spain, by Jordi Pujol. The label was initially founded as a reissue label.

A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ablanedo moved to the United States in 1993 to attend Berklee College of Music, where he studied under Herb Pomeroy and received the John Dankworth Award for Jazz Composition. [6] He received an honorable mention in the Jazz Composers Alliance Julius Hemphill Awards in 2000. [7] He formed the Pablo Ablanedo Octet with fellow Berklee graduates in 1999. [8]

Irving Herbert Pomeroy III was a jazz trumpeter, teacher, and the founder of the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble.

His first album with the Octet, From Down There, was released in 2001 on Fresh Sound New Talent. [9] The record was reviewed positively by Down Beat magazine [10] and the Boston Herald . [11] He subsequently released a second album with the Octet on Fresh Sound New Talent, "Alegría" (2003), [12] as well as contributing compositions to the label's multi-artist release The Sound of New York Jazz Underground in 2004. [13] Ablanedo's work was also commissioned by Paquito D'Rivera to be played by the Norddeutscher Rundfunk Big Band.

In 2013, Ablanedo released his third album with the Octet, Recontradoble on Creative Nation Music. Glenn Astarita praised the album for its musical blend and its "technical excellence and shifty arrangements" in All About Jazz magazine, [14] and the album was chosen by Danilo Navas as one of Latin Jazz Net's top Latin Jazz Albums of 2013. Irakere is a Cuban band founded by pianist Chucho Valdés in 1973. They won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording in 1980 with their album Irakere. Irakere was a seminal musical laboratory, where historic innovations in both Afro-Cuban jazz and Cuban popular dance music were created. The group used a wide array of percussion instruments like batá, abakuá and arará drums, chequerés, erikundis, maracas, claves, cencerros, bongó, tumbadoras (congas), and güiro.

Sofia Eugenia Koutsovitis, known professionally as Sofia Rei, is an Argentinian vocalist, songwriter, producer, and educator. A classically trained mezzo-soprano, Rei's influences include South American folk styles, jazz, pop, new classical and electronic music. Singing in Spanish, English and Portuguese, her voice was described by The Boston Globe as "possessing a voluptuously full voice, comprehensive command of Latin American rhythms, and encyclopedic knowledge of folkloric forms from Argentina, Peru, Colombia, and Uruguay." She was born and raised in Buenos Aires and has been based in New York since 2005.

Juan Pablo Torres Morell was a Cuban trombonist, bandleader, arranger and producer. He was the director of Algo Nuevo and a member of Irakere, two of the leading exponents of songo and Afro-Cuban jazz in the 1970s and 1980s. He has also directed various Cuban supergroups such as Estrellas de Areito and Cuban Masters. He has been called "one of the best trombone players in the Latin-jazz community of the 1990s".
