Padraig "Paddy" Crumlin is an Australian trade unionist. In addition to his leadership of the Maritime Union of Australia since 2000,he has been the President of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) since 2010 and the International President of the Construction,Forestry,Maritime,Mining and Energy Union since that union was established in 2018. Crumlin is a long-term advocate and proponent of Workers Capital;the responsible investment of workers' superannuation and pension funds and has held leadership positions with the Maritime Super fund and is the Co-Chair of the Committee on Workers Capital,a global effort to coordinate investment policies that meet Environmental,Social and Governance targets to ensure workers' retirement funds are invested ethically and responsibly.
Crumlin serves a Director of the ACTU's Centre for Workers' Capital in Australia and chairs a number of charitable and not-for-profit organisations including the Tas Bull Seafarers Foundation,Hunterlink and the ITF Seafarers Trust,as well as representing workers at the International Labor Organisation on maritime related labour governance matters.
Crumlin is also active in industry development and training,chairing Maritime Employee Training Limited and having served as a Director of Sydney Ports Corporation.
Crumlin went to sea in 1978. He has been a full-time union official since 1987 including Branch Secretary and Assistant National Secretary of the Seamen's Union of Australia and after amalgamation with the Waterside Workers' Federation of Australia in 1993,became the Deputy National Secretary and subsequently the National Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia. [3] Since the Maritime Union's amalgamation in 2018 with the CFMEU,Crumlin has continued to serve as the division's National Secretary.
Crumlin has wide involvement in the port authority,towage,shipping,hydrocarbon,diving,cruise ship and stevedoring industries in Australia and internationally.
Crumlin was elected President of the International Transport Workers’Federation (ITF) in August 2010 [4] –a global union federation of 677 trade unions representing 19.7 million workers in 149 countries in the seafaring,port,road,rail and aviation sectors. In August 2006,he was elected as Chair of the Dockers Section [5] of the ITF and is an Executive Member of the ITF. He has represented international seafarers at the International Labor Organisation on maritime conventions for over 15 years in a senior capacity Member of the Executive Board of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU).

The Australian waterfront dispute of 1998 was an event in Australian industrial relations history,in which the Patrick Corporation undertook a restructuring of their operations for the purpose of dismissing their workforce. The restructuring by Patrick Corporation was later ruled illegal by Australian courts. The dispute involved Patrick Corporation terminating the employment of its workforce and locking out the workers of the workplace after the restructuring had taken place,with many of these workers members of the dominant Maritime Union of Australia. The resulting dismissal and locking out of their unionised workforce was supported and backed by the Australian Liberal/National Coalition Government.

It was established in 1981 by the Executive Board of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF),a global federation of transport workers' unions with over 4.6 million worker members. The stated mission of the Trust is to assist with "the moral,spiritual and physical welfare of seafarers regardless of nationality,race or creed." The Trust receives funds from both the Trust's own capital funds and by the investment income of the ITF Seafarers' International Assistance,Welfare and Protection Fund,more commonly known as the "Welfare Fund". That fund,despite its name,is used to provide a wide range of trade union services to seafarers. The Trust is limited to supporting projects which directly benefit individual seafarers' spiritual,moral or physical welfare.

ISWAN is the result of a merger between two organisations. These were the International Committee on Seafarers' Welfare (ICSW) and the International Seafarers Assistance Network (ISAN). ICSW was formed in 1973 and ISAN was established in the late 1990s. These two welfare bodies merged in April 2013 to form ISWAN. ISWAN's headquarters are in Croydon,Greater London.
