East Kalimantan is a province of Indonesia. Its territory comprises the eastern portion of Borneo. It had a population of about 3.03 million at the 2010 census, 3.42 million at the 2015 census, and 3.766 million at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 3,859,783. Its capital is the city of Samarinda.

The stadium was initially named as Jakabaring stadium after the location of the stadium in southern outskirt of Palembang. However, later the stadium was renamed "Gelora Sriwijaya", to honor and celebrate the 7th—13th century Indonesian empire of Srivijaya. The Third Place Playoff of the 2007 AFC Asian Cup was held in this stadium. The football club Sriwijaya is based at the stadium.

It is currently mostly used for football matches. The stadium has a capacity of 35,000 people. The stadium was built for organizing the PON XV 2000, which was hosted by East Java and after the event East Java PON museum was built in front of the stadium.

Formerly known as the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold, it was first held in 2010 in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, and change its venue in different cities every year. The tournament categorized as BWF Grand Prix Gold event, and offered total prize money of US$120,000. The tournament changed its title to Indonesian Masters in 2014. Since 2018 it is held at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta and offers prize money of US$350,000. In 2021, the tournament got upgraded from a Super 500 to a Super 750.
Bung Karno Sports Arena, formerly named Senayan Sports Arena from 1969 to 2001 and Asian Games Complex on its early days, is a sports complex located in Gelora, Central Jakarta, Indonesia. It is usually misperceived to be located at Senayan, South Jakarta, hence its former name. The sports complex hosts main stadium, secondary stadium, the Sports Palace, football fields, aquatic stadium, tennis stadiums, hockey, baseball and archery fields, and several indoor gymnasiums.
