Panayotis G. Katsoyannis (January 7, 1924 - May 31, 2019) was an American biochemist who is often credited with being the first to synthesize insulin while leading a team at the University of Pittsburgh in the early 1960s. His results synthesizing insulin were achieved almost simultaneously with that of Helmut Zahn at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. [1] [2] In his early years, while doing his PhD at the University of Athens Katsoyannis had been under the mentorship of Leonidas Zervas, who previously developed new synthetic methods for asymmetric cysteine-containing peptides as those in insulin. [3]

Katsoyannis was also noted for his studies on the synthesis of oxytocin and vasopressin. [4] [5] Following his time at the University of Pittsburgh, Katsoyannis served as the head of the division of biochemistry at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and later was appointed as the founding chairman of the department of biochemistry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1967 where he remained until the end of his life, in later years as distinguished service professor and chair emeritus in pharmacologic and systems therapeutics. Katoyannis received the Commemorative Medallion of the American Diabetes Association in 1972 on the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of insulin. He also received the Jacobi Medallion from Mount Sinai Alumni in 1995 and an honorary degree from the University of Patras in Greece in 1997. [7] He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1966), the New York Academy of Sciences (1977), and a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Greece (Academy of Athens) (1966). [6]

Katoyannis died on May 31, 2019, at the age of 95. [8]

His results synthesizing insulin were achieved almost simultaneously with that of Panayotis Katsoyannis at the University of Pittsburgh. His work was not honoured by the Nobel prize because in 1958 Frederick Sanger was the first who discovered the chemical structure of Insulin.

Sidney Yankauer (1872–1932) was an American otolaryngologist. A graduate of the City College of New York and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, he was among the first surgeons to specialize in problems of the ear, nose and throat. A prohormone is a committed precursor of a hormone consisting of peptide hormones synthesized together that has a minimal hormonal effect by itself because of its expression-suppressing structure, often created by protein folding and binding additional peptide chains to certain ends, that makes hormone receptor binding sites located on its peptide hormone chain segments inaccessible. Prohormones can travel the blood stream as a hormone in an inactivated form, ready to be activated later in the cell by post-translational modification.

In 1965, Chinese scientists first synthesized crystalline bovine insulin, which was the first functional crystalline protein being fully synthesized in the world. Research on synthesizing bovine insulin started on 1958. Members in the research group were from the Chemistry Department of Beijing University, Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry, CAS and Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS.

Zhang Youshang was a Chinese biochemist, professor and vice-president of the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. He was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and served as chief editor of the peer-reviewed journal Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica (ABBS). His research was focused on protein structures and insulin.

Leonidas Zervas was a Greek organic chemist who made seminal contributions in peptide chemical synthesis. Together with his mentor Max Bergmann they laid the foundations for the field in 1932 with their major discovery, the Bergmann-Zervas carboxybenzoxy oligopeptide synthesis which remained unsurpassed in utility for the next two decades. The carboxybenzyl protecting group he discovered is often abbreviated Z in his honour.

He is recognized for his discoveries and inventions in the general areas of molecular pharmacology, GPCR structure, and function and synthetic neurobiology.
