Panellinios V.C. is the men's volleyball section of Panellinios G.S., the Greek multi-sports club, that is based in Athens. It was one of the first volleyball clubs in Greece, and is also one of the most successful, since it has won six Greek Championships. [1] Panellinios also has a women's team that has won two Greek Women's Championships, and one Greek Women's Cup. [2]

History

Panellinios was one of the first volleyball clubs in Greece. The former sports trainer of Panellinios, Anastasios Lefkaditis, is considered to be the man who is mainly responsible for importing the sport of volleyball to Greece. [3] [4] Panellinios took part in the first unofficial Greek men's volleyball championship, along with Panionios and Ethnikos Athens. It was the first winner of the official Greek volleyball championship in 1936. It won 6 overall Greek championships, through the year 1961. In recent years, the team has played in the A2 Ethniki (2nd-tier level).

Women's team

Panellinios also has a volleyball team that dominated in Greek women's volleyball, during the 2000-2002 period. The team won two Greek Women's Championships (2001, 2002), and one Greek Women's Cup (2001). In 2012, the team withdrew from the women's championship, due to financial problems, and nowadays, it plays in the lower local divisions. [5]

AEK Men's Volleyball Club is the volleyball team of the major Greek multi-sports club AEK. It was founded in 1982. AEK had its finest moment with coach Stelios Prosalikas when they reached the Final-4 of the Cup Winners Cup in 2000. The matches were held in Athens and AEK lost in the semifinal by Cuneo, but won 3–1 Galatasaray in the 3rd place game.

Panathinaikos AC Women's Volleyball Team is a Greek volleyball team, part of the major Athens-based multi-sport club Panathinaikos A.O. The department was founded in 1969 and is the most successful women's volleyball team in Greece, in terms of Greek Championships won. They have won a record 25 Championships, 6 Cups, with 5 Doubles, while they hold the record for finishing undefeated the Championship 8 times. They hold also the record of 68 straight wins in the league including the play-offs.

Nea Salamis Famagusta VC or Nea Salamina Famagusta VC is a professional volleyball team based in Ammochostos, Cyprus. It has been a refugee club since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, when Turkey occupied the northern part of the island. The club is temporarily based in Limassol. The team is part of the Nea Salamina Famagusta sports club, which was founded in 1948; the parent club also fields a men's football team which temporarily based in Larnaka.

A2 Ethniki Women's Volleyball is the 2nd-tier of championship of women's volleyball in Greece. Since current year, the championship is held in four subgroups of teams. The winners of each subgroups take part in play off games. The winners of play off team take part in final four and three best teams promote to A1 Ethniki. In current season the winners are AOF Porfyras, Iraklis Kifissias and APS Corinthos. From 2017 to 2018 season established a second level in A2 category named as Women's Pre League.

Panionios Women's Basketball is the women's basketball department of Panionios GSS, the Greek multi-sport club based in Nea Smyrni. The first basketball department of the club was founded in 1919 and was one of the first in Greece. The women's department in turn was established in the post-war period. Its last reconstitution took place in the late 1990s. The club plays in A2 Ethniki but recently it has played in A1 Ethniki. They have won one Greek Championship, in 2007.

Aliki Konstantinidou is a female professional volleyball player from Greece, who has been a member of the Greece women's national volleyball team. At club level, she plays for Greek powerhouse Olympiacos Piraeus. Meanwhile, in a previous season she won with the Piraeus team both the Greek Championship and the Greek Cup.

Dimitra Giakoumi is a female professional volleyball player from Greece, who has been a member of the Greece women's national volleyball team. At club level, she played for Greek powerhouse Olympiacos Piraeus from 2010 to 2013, winning 1 Greek Championship and 3 Greek Cups. As Olympiacos captain, she led the club to the first Greek Championship in its history in 2012–13 season, being voted Greek Championship 2012–13 MVP in the process.
