Panfu was a massively multiplayer online game for children aged between 6 and 14, involving a virtual world where players could create their own panda and explore the island of Panfu. Players were able to complete quests, play mini-games and chat with other pandas. According to the creators, about 15,000 players registered daily on the German Panfu. [1] Panfu was made available to the general public on December 1, 2007 – after a beta testing-phase which lasted a month. [2]

The servers were taken offline in November 2016 after Goodbeans GmbH filed for bankruptcy in 2015. [3]

History

The two founders of Young Internet, Kay Kühne and Moritz Hohl, first published Panfu in December 2007, after 3 months of development and a month of public beta testing. Panfu is a name composed of the words "panda" and the Chinese word for happiness, "fu". [4] Only 6 weeks after its launch, Panfu had more than 300,000 registered members. [5] Following this, Panfu hit one million users in April 2008, [6] and in June 2009, the website had 10 million users worldwide and stood as the biggest children's virtual world in Europe. [7]

The number of users eventually grew to over 15 million, and the game was translated into 12 different languages. [8] In April 2012, Young Internet was renamed to Goodbeans and shifted their focus to mobile gaming. [9] With the new focus on mobile-only, their focus slowly drifted away from Panfu. The last team-members were laid off in December 2014, and in February 2015 there were only two employees left. [10] In January 2015 Goodbeans filed for bankruptcy, after Panfu had not been updated since December 2014. Instead of shutting Panfu down completely, the team decided to let the game remain open until the domain expired, and thus never properly announced that they were closing. [11] Panfu finally closed in November 2016. [12] [13] [3]

Security in Panfu

According to the creators, security was the biggest priority in Panfu.[ citation needed ] The chat was closed from 3 AM to 8 AM on weekdays, and from 8 PM to 11 AM on weekends. A word filter prevented verbal attacks and warned players when they didn't follow the rules. The chat was also under strict observation by moderators, who acted as safeguarders for players on the site. Parents could also opt-in to allow their child to only see the high security-chat. It allowed the child to select chats from a menu of premade greetings, questions, phrases, feelings, and options for action. [14]

In July 2009, the first Panda sheriffs were introduced to help the moderators keep Panfu safe. They could mute other players for 30 minutes or freeze them, so they could not do anything for a minute. This worked only a few times, after which the sheriffs had to bring another sheriff or a moderator to help. Players could tell which pandas were sheriffs by the star-badge they had on their profiles.

Membership

Some features in Panfu required players to purchase a membership known as "Gold Panda" in order to be used. "Gold Panda" gave players the opportunity to decorate their treehouse, purchase clothes, adopt a pet and visit the "Underwater School". [15] In 2013, a lifetime Gold Panda-offer was made, which was originally intended to be limited only to the spring of that year, but instead ended up remaining until the game was closed. [16]

Habitat is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by LucasArts. It is the first attempt at a large-scale commercial virtual community that was graphic based. Initially created in 1985 by Randy Farmer, Chip Morningstar, Aric Wilmunder and Janet Hunter the game was made available as a beta test in 1986 by Quantum Link, an online service for the Commodore 64 computer and the corporate progenitor to AOL. Both Farmer and Morningstar were given a First Penguin Award at the 2001 Game Developers Choice Awards for their innovative work on Habitat. As a graphical MUD it is considered a forerunner of modern MMORPGs unlike other online communities of the time. Habitat had a GUI and large user base of consumer-oriented users, and those elements in particular have made Habitat a much-cited project and acknowledged benchmark for the design of today's online communities that incorporate accelerated 3D computer graphics and immersive elements into their environments.

BarbieGirls.com was an online virtual world created by Mattel, based on the Barbie brand. It opened on April 24, 2007 and eventually closed on June 1, 2011. International versions of the site closed on April 30, 2011. Mattel also released a line of MP3 players that looked like avatars from the website, these devices came with a free VIP membership for the site.

Free non-memberships were available, revenue was predominantly raised through paid memberships, allowing players to access additional features

<i>Fantage</i> 2008 video game

Fantage was a MMORPG involving a virtual world containing a range of online games and activities, developed by Fantage Inc. The game featured a customizable cartoon avatar, called a "Fantagian", that users can customize with items ranging from hair to clothing and accessories. Fantage was released to the general public on March 17, 2008, and had since expanded into a large online community— the game had over 16 million registered users by January 2012 and over 30 million by December 2014.

<i>vSide</i> 2006 video game

vSide was an Internet-based 3D virtual world that was launched on May 15, 2006. The game is in its public beta phase. However, the game appears to have been discontinued as of 2021. Initially developed by American studio Doppelganger, Inc., a studio founded in 2004, the game was acquired in June 2009 by ExitReality, which is the owner and developer. Inside the game's universe, users are called vSiders and can interact with each other through social networking, celebrity entertainment, virtual boutique shopping and self-expression. Membership is free.

GoPets was a virtual pet site that involved raising a customized three-dimensional pet downloaded onto a user's computer. GoPets was launched on August 4, 2005 and closed on November 8, 2009.

MiniMonos was a virtual world for children six and above. Players created a monkey avatar on MiniMonos, socialized with other monkeys, and played mini games. The game incorporated themes of environmentalism and encourages "green" activities among its players, both online and offline. The game was popular with children around the world, particularly in the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand, where the game was invented. The game closed on 12 May 2013.

YouNow acquired BlogTV.com on March 13, 2013.
