Paper Recordings is a Manchester based record company. [2] [3] It released contemporary electronic music from an international roster of recording artists integrating the genres of house, funk, jazz, techno and soul. [4] Along with Nuphonic, [5] Glasgow Underground Recordings and 20/20 Vision recordings, it was part of the Nu-Disco genre in the late 1990s and 2000s. [2] [6]

History

Founded in 1993 by Pete Jenkinson, Ben Davis, Miles Hollway, Elliot Eastwick, Andrew Gough and Stephen Page while all working at The Hacienda [7] and Hard Times club nights. The label has released over 2000 recordings, created by over 500 artists, producers, and remixers in over 50 countries across imprints Paper Recordings, Paper Disco, Paper Wave, Repap Records and We Are Woodville Records. [8]

It released the debut album in 1997 from Tromsø [9] band Those Norwegians, [10] comprising Rune Lindbæk, [11] Ole Johan Mjøs [12] and Torbjørn Brundtland who went on to form Röyksopp with Svein Berge. [13] This album was titled Kaminsky Park, a pun on Comiskey Park that witnessed the Disco Demolition Night protests in 1979 and with its LP artwork depicting a burnt and warped 12" vinyl. [14]

Notable musicians, artists and producers that have worked with the label includes Crazy P, Rasmus Faber, Xpress 2, Eddie 'Flashin' Fowlkes, Ashley Beedle, Greg Wilson, Silicone Soul, Ladytron, Kenny Hawkes, Two Lone Swordsmen (Andrew Weatherall and Keith Tennison), Derrick Carter, Håkan Lidbo, Andy Votel, Faze Action, Richard Norris, Matthew Herbert, Zed Bias, Ralph Myerz, Mike Lindsay (Tunng), Jane Weaver, Ian Pooley, Kathy Diamond, Anoraak, Bill Brewster and Mathias Stubø (Proviant Audio). Robodisco

Robodisco was a club night associated with the label, [16] hosting dance parties between 1996 and 2005 at venues including Sankeys Soap, Paradise Factory, Planet K, [17] South Nightclub, [18] PJ Bells, with associated nights Sonic Tonic, Out to Lunch at The Roadhouse and State respectively. [19]

Paper Vision Films

Pete Jenkinson and Ben Davis started a film production company in 2014 with their first project, 'Northern Disco Lights - The Rise and Rise of Norwegian Dance Music' [6] [20] investigating the emergence of the Nordic dance music scene premiering at Bergen International Film Festival in 2016. [21] The documentary features interviews with Bryan Ferry, Lindstrøm, Annie, Per Martinsen, Prins Thomas, Bjørn Torske and Nemone. [22] The film has screened at over fifty international film festivals in cities including Tromsø, London, Oslo, Bergen, Kyiv, Svalbard, Berlin, Alaska, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Baku, Tbilisi, Turin, Prague and Manchester. [23] A second documentary, Wild Water focused on the wild swimming community at England’s highest beach, [24] Gaddings Dam in West Yorkshire, UK.

Frost is a Norwegian electronic duo consisting of Aggie Peterson and Per Martinsen. The group formed in 1997 in Tromsø, Norway with original line-up composed of Aggie Peterson and DJ Rune Lindbæk. They released their debut album Bedsit Theories in 1998.

Mental Overdrive is the primary solo moniker of Per Martinsen, one of Norway's most prolific and influential techno musicians. His tracks have ranged from hardcore rave techno to vibrant space-disco, and he's always maintained a healthy balance of humor and braininess. Active since 1990, he began his career releasing several 12" EPs of aggressive, rave-ready hardcore techno on revered Belgian label R&S, including 12000 AD (1990), The Second Coming (1991), Move!, and The Love EP (1992). In 1994, Martinsen began releasing atmospheric techno singles as part of Illumination, his duo with Nicholas Sillitoe. The next year, Mental Overdrive released the single "Disto Disco," which featured a B-side ("Faith") co-written by R&S artist Outlander, best known for the 1991 classic "Vamp." The A-side appeared on Mental Overdrive's full-length debut Plugged, released on Martinsen's own Love OD Communications. The album showed a notable progression in his music, maintaining its rough, distorted hardcore techno sound while adding more cerebral elements, placing it closer to Warp's Artificial Intelligence series. Martinsen displayed his sense of humor with 1996's Unplugged, a limited conceptual release containing silent "versions" of the tracks on Plugged. 083 In 1997, Mental Overdrive signed to Virgin and released About Jazz, a significantly more house/disco-influenced EP than his previous work. This was followed by full-length Ad Absurdum, which continued in a more light-hearted and funky direction than his previous releases. He took a few years off from releasing Mental Overdrive recordings, instead devoting time to Frost and Illumination, which released two albums on RCA. Following the 2003 release of Mental Overdrive's Me EP on Love OD, he signed to Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound and released full-length 083, which featured the single "Diskodans." In 2005, the label compiled his early R&S material on CD as The Phuture That Never Happened. Two years later, Mental Overdrive's single "Spooks" appeared on Prins Thomas' Full Pupp label. The song appeared on his next Smalltown full-length, You Are Being Manipulated, which was released in 2008. The album was perfectly at home with the label's other left-field dance artists like Bjørn Torske and Kim Hiorthøy, while maintaining the unique Mental Overdrive sound. Martinsen continued releasing Mental Overdrive singles on Full Pupp and Love OD, and contributed to Rune Lindbæk's Meanderthals project. In 2012, he released Man with a Movie Camera, an EP featuring music he'd composed for a 1996 screening of the Russian silent film of the same name, which also featured pieces by Biosphere which would later appear on the 2001 remaster of his classic album Substrata. Mental Overdrive returned to his Love OD label for 2013 full-length Cycls, as well as 2014's Everything Is Connected, which compiled a few previously released EPs. In 2016, Full Pupp sublabel Rett I Fletta released a new version of Plugged consisting of alternate takes sourced from the original DAT tapes.

The Tromsø techno scene is the origin of many of Norway's most important artists within electronic music. The internationally best-known names are Röyksopp, Biosphere and Bel Canto.

<i>Do It Again</i> (EP) 2014 EP by Röyksopp and Robyn

Do It Again is an extended play (EP) by Norwegian electronic music duo Röyksopp and Swedish singer Robyn, released on 23 May 2014 by Dog Triumph. The EP coincides with Röyksopp and Robyn's joint tour, the Röyksopp & Robyn Do It Again Tour 2014, featuring shows in Europe and North America. Following her Body Talk Tour, Robyn travelled to Bergen, Norway, where she began working on new music with Röyksopp in early 2013, having previously collaborated with the duo on the songs "The Girl and the Robot" (2009) and "None of Dem" (2010).

Avant-funk is a music style in which artists combine funk or disco rhythms with an avant-garde or art rock mentality. Its most prominent era occurred in the late 1970s and 1980s among post-punk and no wave acts who embraced black dance music.
