Parakala Prabhakar (born 2 January 1959) is an Indian political economist and social commentator. He served as Communications Advisor in cabinet rank in the Government of Andhra Pradesh from July 2014 to June 2018. For several years, he presented current affairs discussion programme on Telugu television channels, such as Pratidhwani on ETV2 and Namaste Andhra Pradesh on NTV. [1]

He was formerly a spokesman of Praja Rajyam Party. [2] His spouse is Nirmala Sitharaman, the incumbent union Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs.

His also the author of the book The Crooked Timber of New India - Essays on a Republic in Crisis. [3]

Early life and education

Parakala was born in a prominent Telugu speaking family [4] in Narsapuram, Andhra Pradesh. He belongs to Congress members' family. His mother, Parakala Kalikamba was a Member of Legislative Assembly in Andhra Pradesh, while his father, Parakala Seshavatharam, was a long time Legislator from Narasapuram and served in three successive Cabinets in the state of Andhra Pradesh in the 1970s and early 1980s.

He did his Master of Arts (M.A.) and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He later studied at London School of Economics and was awarded Doctor of Philosophy in economics from University of London in 1991.

Prabhakar married Nirmala Sitharaman in 1986, who became the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of the Government of India in Narendra Modi's cabinet. They have a daughter.

Political career

He was one of the founding members of the Praja Rajyam Party and was appointed as a spokesperson of the party. [5] However, in April 2009, he quit the party, a few months before the state election, citing disagreements with the party's functioning. [6]

Nirmala Sitharaman is an Indian economist, politician and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) serving as the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs of the Government of India since 2019. She is a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, representing Karnataka since 2016 and previously represented Andhra Pradesh from 2014 to 2016. The Telangana protests 2004-2010 refers to the movements and agitations related to the Telangana movement that took place between the years 2004 and 2010. For the 2004 Assembly and Parliament elections, the Congress party and the TRS had an electoral alliance in the Telangana region to consider the demand of separate Telangana State. However, again in 2006, the then Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy categorically said that the state would remain united. This again resulted in statewide protests. In 2009, Union Minister of Home Affairs P. Chidambaram announced that the Indian government would start the process of forming a separate Telangana state, pending the introduction and passage of a separation resolution in the Andhra Pradesh assembly after an 11-day fast by K. Chandrashekar Rao. This again resulted in protests across both Andhra and Rayalseema as in a short time of the Home Minister's declaration, MLAs from the Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions submitted their resignations in protest.
