Parine Jaddo (born in Baghdad, Iraq [1] in 1956) is an Iraqi Arab American [2] film director.

Biography

Jaddo was born in Baghdad into a working class intellectual and artistic family that was forced to move frequently due to political turmoil in the Middle East. Her family escaped from Iraq and moved to Lebanon where she had studied biology at the American University of Beirut with plans to become a medical doctor but soon her family fled Lebanon when civil war broke out in the mid-'70s despite her staying to finish her degree, where she was sheltered by an American couple from San Diego. Following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, Jaddo came to the U.S. She attended Howard University, where she completed her master's in fine arts with a speciality in film in 1995. [3]

The short movie Aisha, was shot on a 35mm film while a film professor at Howard University and was filmed on the eve of the first American conflict with Iraq. This movie was screened at the Women's Museum of Art in Washington DC. [1]

She has also worked on Sankofa with the Ethiopian film maker Haile Gerima. [4]

Her first documentary, Broken Record, which was inspired by the passing of her mother, was screened at the Reel Iraq festival in the United Kingdom in 2013. [5]

She currently resides and works in Beirut, Lebanon, where she has collaborated with the Arab Image Foundation [6] and taught film courses at a number of universities. [7]

Cinema of Palestine

Cinema of Palestine is relatively young in comparison to Arab cinema as a whole. Palestinian films are not exclusively produced in Arabic and some are even produced in English, French. The films of Palestinian director Elia Suleiman are Palestinian films.

Shatha Hassoun Musical artist

Shatha Amjad Al-Hassoun, better known as Shatha Hassoun, is an Arab singer of Iraqi and Moroccan ancestry, who rose to fame as the winner of the 4th season of the pan-Arab television talent show Star Academy Arab World. She was the first Arab woman to win the competition. She is currently one of the most popular singers in both the Middle East and Maghreb region, and is referred to as the "daughter of Mesopotamia".

The cinema of Lebanon, according to film critic and historian Roy Armes, is the only other cinema in the Arabic-speaking region, beside Egypt's, that could amount to a national cinema. Cinema in Lebanon has been in existence since the 1920s, and the country has produced more than 500 films.

Koutaiba Al-Janabi is a British-based Iraqi filmmaker, director and photographer. He was born in Baghdad. He filmed Wasteland: Between London and Baghdad and the 2010 award-winning film, Leaving Baghdad. He is a member of the Hungarian Society of Cinematographers.

Maysoon Pachachi is a film director, editor and producer of Iraqi origin. She was educated in Iraq, the U.S., Britain and can speak English, Arabic, French and Italian. She studied Philosophy at University College London and Film under Thorold Dickinson at the Slade School of Art, where visiting lecturers included Jean Renoir and Gillo Pontecorvo. She has made documentaries in Iraq, Iran, Palestine, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon. Aside from making films, Maysoon has also taught film directing and editing in Britain, Iraq and Palestine. She now lives in Britain where she co-founded Act Together: Women Against Sanctions and War on Iraq, a group of UK-based Iraqi and non-Iraqi women formed in 2000 to campaign against the economic sanctions on Iraq. They also campaigned against the invasion of Iraq. Now the group's focus is on the occupation and the support of independent grassroots women’s initiatives in Iraq. She has also written articles on her work in Iraq and Palestine for the New Statesman and The Guardian among other publications.

Heavy Metal in Baghdad is a 2007 rockumentary film following filmmakers Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi as they track down the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda amidst the Iraq War.

Sahar Taha was an Iraqi musician and journalist living in Lebanon. She co-hosted the Lebanese programme Banat Hawa on LBC. She was known for playing the oud in both eastern and western music.

Starring Julia is a 2012 Lebanese short film written and directed by Elie Fahed. The short film premiered at the Beirut International Film Festival in 2012 where it got the Orbit Special Jury Prize, and traveled the world after it, taking part in the Baghdad International Film Festival, Menar Film Festivalin Bulgaria, Mizna's 8th Twin Cities Arab Film Festival, FICMEC 5th edition, Notre Dame University – Louaize International Film Festival, Outbox Film Festival, and won the "Best Student Short Film" award at the Monaco Charity Film Festival in 2013.

Heiny Srour is a Lebanese film director. She is best known for being the first female Arab filmmaker to have a film, Saat El Tahrir Dakkat or The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived, chosen for the Cannes Film Festival. Srour advocated for women's rights through her films, her writing, and by funding other filmmakers.

Rania Stephan is a Lebanese filmmaker and video artist. She is best known for her first feature film The Three Disappearances of Soad Hosni (2011).

Eliane Raheb is a documentary filmmaker and director from Lebanon. She made her debut as a director with her 2012 film, Layali Bala Noom.

Zahraa Ghandour is an Iraqi actress and film director.

Martyr is the second feature film by Lebanese writer and director Mazen Khaled. The film was selected for screening at the 74th Venice International Film Festival in the Biennale College - Cinema section, where it was nominated for the Queer Lion award, and at the 2018 SXSW in the Global section. Martyr was produced by Diala Kachmar of Artrip Production and is distributed in North America by Breaking Glass Pictures and in the UK by Peccadillo Pictures. Martyr was described by Indiewire as "One of the most under-appreciated films of 2018". It features a large ensemble cast led by Carol Abboud, Hamza Mekdad, and Moustafa Fahs.
