The Indonesian National Armed Forces are the military forces of the Republic of Indonesia. It consists of the Army (TNI-AD), Navy (TNI-AL), and Air Force (TNI-AU). The President of Indonesia is the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. In 2021, it comprises approximately 395,500 military personnel including the Indonesian Marine Corps, which is a branch of the Navy.
Guard mounting, changing the guard, or the changing of the guard, is a formal ceremony in which sentries performing ceremonial guard duties at important institutions are relieved by a new batch of sentries. The ceremonies are often elaborate and precisely choreographed. They originated with peacetime and battlefield military drills introduced to enhance unit cohesion and effectiveness in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Istana Negara is one of the six presidential palaces of Indonesia. It is located on Veteran Street in Central Jakarta, with Merdeka Palace located south. It is part of the presidential palace compound which has a total area of 68,000 m², along with three other buildings: Bina Graha that was formerly used as the President's Office, Wisma Negara in the western side which is used as state guest house, and the office for the Ministry of State Secretariat of Indonesia. Istana Negara faces north towards aforementioned street, while the Merdeka Palace faces Merdeka Square and the National Monument (Monas).

The palace is noted for its distinctive architectural and historical features, as well as the adjoining botanical gardens. Istana Bogor was opened to the public in 1968 to public tour groups, with the permission of the acting president of Indonesia, Suharto. The gardens of the palace covers an area of 284,000 square metres.
The Vice Presidential Palace is occupied by the offices of the Vice President of Indonesia, located on Merdeka Selatan Street in Jakarta. It is currently occupied by Vice President Ma'ruf Amin.

A guard of honour (GB), also honor guard (US), also ceremonial guard, is a group of people, usually military in nature, appointed to receive or guard a head of state or other dignitaries, the fallen in war, or to attend at state ceremonials, especially funerals. In military weddings, especially those of commissioned officers, a guard, composed usually of service members of the same branch, form the Saber arch. In principle any military unit could act as a guard of honour. However, in some countries certain units are specially designated to serve as a guard of honour, as well as other public duties.
The Presidential Security Force of Indonesia is one of the Central Executive Agencies of the Indonesian National Armed Forces responsible for proximate security and escort towards the head of state and VVIP in Indonesia, which includes the President, Vice President with their immediate families, former Presidents and Vice Presidents, and visiting foreign heads of state. Paspampres is based in Jakarta, and its personnel are drawn from deputized best-chosen officers, soldiers, seamen, marines, and airmen from special forces and/or special units within the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). It is commanded by a two-star military general.
The Presidential Decree of July 5, 1959 was issued by President Sukarno in the face of the inability of the Constitutional Assembly of Indonesia to achieve the two-thirds majority to reimpose the 1945 Constitution. It was army chief of staff Abdul Haris Nasution who concluded that this would be the only way to bring about the reintroduction of a constitution that paved the way for the military to play a greater role in the running of the state, ushering in the period known as the "guided democracy" (1959–1966).
The Tjakrabirawa Regiment was the presidential bodyguard unit of the former Indonesian President Sukarno. It was disbanded in 1966 because of its involvement in the coup attempt of the 30 September Movement.

The Paskibraka is a youth organization and/or flag-raising squad in Indonesia which has the main task for raising and lowering the heirloom national flag of Indonesia in Independence day ceremonies commemorating the independence day of Indonesia throughout Indonesia. Its members come from grade 10 or 11 high school students selected from schools regionally. Its mission is to provide flag bearers and escorts for national flag ceremonies commemorating independence day in the city, province, and national level in Indonesia as well as in some international functions at overseas Indonesian installations. It was founded by Major (rtd.) Husein Mutahar, regulated by Ministry of Youth and Sports, and organized by a national organization with its HQ in Jakarta called the "National Ex-Paskibraka Council".
The Indonesian National Armed Forces Day abbreviated HUT TNI is a national day of Indonesia that is celebrated on 5 October, the day of foundation of the Tentara Keamanan Rakyat, the predecessor of the TNI, in 1945, itself a replacement for the Badan Keamanan Rakyat established on 29 August the same year. Military parades, fun games, concerts and other events are held nationwide in major cities and provincial capitals in honor of the INAF's serving men and women and military veterans.
The Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy is the highest position in the Indonesian Navy. The position is held by the four-star Admiral or Marine General, appointed by and reporting directly to the Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces. Chief of Staff is assisted by Vice Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, position is held by three-star Admiral or Marine General.
The Satgas Pomad Para was the presidential bodyguard unit established by former Indonesian President Soeharto. This task force of military policemen and paratroopers replaced the Tjakrabirawa Regiment after the failed 1965 coup. This task force was liquidated in 1976 and is one of the predecessors of the present day Paspampres.
General Muhammad Andika Perkasa is an Indonesian general who currently serves as the 21st Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces. He was appointed by President of Indonesia Joko Widodo in November 2021, replacing the retiring ACM Hadi Tjahjanto.
The Independence Day of Indonesia is a national holiday in Indonesia commemorating the anniversary of Indonesia's proclamation of independence on 17 August 1945. It was made a national holiday by government decree in 1946.
On 25 October 2022, at around 7:00 am Western Indonesia Time (UTC+7), an attempted shooting occurred in front of the Istana Negara in Jakarta. A female assailant trespassed the Istana Negara security layer and attempted to shoot the President and/or Presidential Guard using an FN Five-seven. President of Indonesia Joko Widodo was not in the Istana Negara at the time of attack as he was visiting East Kalimantan and Nusantara. The assailant was apprehended immediately by the Presidential Guard (Paspampres) and Indonesian National Police on the scene and is currently detained at Metro Jaya Region Police HQ.
