Patricia L. Turner,MD,MBA,FACS is an American general surgeon. She is the first African American,and first woman to serve as executive director and Chief Executive Officer of the American College of Surgeons. Turner formally assumed the role of executive director and CEO on January 1,2022.
Turner earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctor of Medicine from the Wake Forest School of Medicine. [1] During medical school,her research in neurobiology and anatomy focused on neuron apoptosis. [2] In May 2023,she was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine for her contributions to the fields of medicine and surgery. [3]
She continued her training as an intern and resident in surgery at the Howard University Hospital. [2] During residency,Turner spent two years as a senior staff fellow in the National Heart,Lung,and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. [2] Her work there focused on dysregulation of sodium transport in the kidney and nitric oxide's role in the changing abundance of nephron transporter proteins.
Turner's fellowship training in minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery was completed at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai,Weill Cornell Medicine,and Columbia University Irving Medical Center. [4]
Turner earned a Master of Business Administration from the Robert H. Smith School of Business in 2020. [1] [4]
Turner spent eight years in academic practice on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine where she was the surgery residency program director and medical director of the surgical acute care unit. [4] A former adjunct professor in surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine, [5] Turner is currently a clinical professor of surgery in the department of surgery at the Pritzker School of Medicine. In October 2011,Turner was named director of the American College of Surgeons' Division of Member Services. [4] [6] She left this role at the beginning of 2022,after assuming the position of executive director of the organization. [7]
Turner was elected as president of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons (2016 to 2017) and was the first woman to serve in that role. [1] [6]
Turner has served in other leadership positions,including the following:board member of the Council on Medical Specialty Societies;chair,American College of Surgeons' Delegation to the American Medical Association's House of Delegates;past-chair,American Medical Association's Council on Medical Education;past-chair,Surgical Section of the National Medical Association; [1] and past president of the surgical section of the National Medical Association. [2] She also serves on the Board of Directors of OceanFirst Bank (OCFC). [8]
Throughout her career,Turner has been involved in both basic science and clinical research. Her work has focused on dysregulation of sodium transport in the kidney and nitric oxide's role in the changing abundance of nephron transporter proteins. [2] Turner's recent research interests are associated with her clinical expertise in laparoscopic surgery,including developing new training paradigms for residents and more senior surgeons. [2]
Turner served on the editorial board of Surgery News ,the official newspaper of the American College of Surgeons,from 2005 to 2009,and has been published in several peer-reviewed journals,including TheAmerican Surgeon,The American Journal of Surgery,the Journal of the American College of Surgeons,the Journal of Critical Care Medicine, the Journal of Surgical Research,Obesity Surgery,Surgery,and others. She has recently been widely quoted in op-eds and as a television subject matter expert on surgery,healthcare,the COVID-19 pandemic,cancer and trauma care.
Turner is the recipient of the National Institutes of Health Fellows Award for Research Excellence;the Association of Women Surgeons Outstanding Woman Resident Award;the Claude H. Organ,MD,FACS,Traveling Fellowship;the State of Maryland's Henry Welcome Award,and the National Medical Association Council on Concerns of Women Physicians Service Award. [9]

Steven Kenneth Libutti,M.D.,F.A.C.S. is an American surgeon and scientist. In January 2017,he became the third permanent Director of the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey,Vice Chancellor for Cancer Programs for Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and the Senior Vice President for Oncology Services for RWJBarnabas Health,the largest health system in New Jersey. He is a tenured Professor of Surgery at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Libutti's work on the study of tumor angiogenesis and the tumor microenvironment has led to novel approaches for the treatment of cancer. He is also one of the pioneers of regional and targeted cancer therapy.

Seymour I. Schwartz,was the Distinguished Alumni Professor for the Department of Surgery at the University of Rochester in Rochester,New York. He was one of the most prolific and honored surgeons in American history with further successes outside of the field of medicine as a renowned author and cartographic historian. His most notable accomplishments in surgery include being the founding editor-in-chief of Schwartz's Principles of Surgery,Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Rochester (1987-1998),Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons (1996-2004) and President of the American College of Surgeons (1997-1998). After spending nearly 65 years in the field of surgery,he has published hundreds of research articles,textbook chapters,and received numerous honors in the United States and abroad. Schwartz has lectured throughout the world as a visiting professor and donated to many philanthropic endeavors. His influence on surgical education and leadership has impacted nearly every practicing surgeon in the world. Throughout his career,Schwartz has treated and changed the lives of tens of thousands of patients and trained generations of residents and fellows to share in his legacy and do the same.

Hurt Watts Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia. Prior to joining academia,Zeiger spent six years in the United States Navy as General Medical Officer,Commander and Surgeon in San Diego,Hawaii and Washington,D.C.
