Traffic court is a specialized judicial process for handling traffic ticket cases. In the United States,people who are given a citation by a police officer can plead guilty and pay the indicated fine directly to the court house,by mail,or on the Internet. A person who wishes to plead not guilty or otherwise contest the charges is required to appear in court on the predetermined date on the citation,where they may argue before the judge or negotiate with the prosecutor before being called to appear in front of the judge. Most prosecutors will not negotiate with someone who does not have a lawyer. The person may also request a trial by a written declaration in the following states:California,Florida,Hawaii,Indiana,Louisiana,Nebraska,Ohio,Oregon,and Wyoming. In the case of a trial by written declaration,the accused does not have to be present in the courtroom;they may just explain the reason to defense for the case. Officers are required to turn in their declaration. The judge will then make a decision based on the declarations and evidence from both sides. After the written trial,the accused is allowed to request a new in-person hearing if they are not satisfied with the outcome of the written trial,by filing a trial de novo request.
Michael "Mickey" Sherman is a Connecticut-based American criminal defense attorney. He is known for his representation of Michael Skakel. Sherman's client was found guilty. In October 2013,a judge ordered a retrial for Skakel,citing Sherman's "glaring ineffectiveness";the State appealed to the Connecticut Supreme Court,which reinstated the conviction on December 30,2016,as reported by the New York Times on December 31,2016. On May,4,2018,the conviction was overturned by the Connecticut Supreme Court.
Kathryn Johnston was an elderly woman from Atlanta,Georgia who was killed by undercover police officers in her home on Neal Street in northwest Atlanta on November 21,2006,where she had lived for 17 years. Three officers had entered her home in what was later described as a 'botched' drug raid. Officers cut off burglar bars and broke down her door using a no-knock warrant. Police said Johnston fired at them and they fired in response;she fired one shot out the door over the officers' heads and they fired 39 shots,five or six of which hit her. None of the officers were injured by her gunfire,but Johnston was killed by the officers. Police injuries were later attributed to friendly fire from each other's weapons.
William Patrick Syring is an American retired career diplomat who was convicted of threatening and violating the civil rights of James Zogby,the Arab president and founder,and other senior employees of the anti-Israel Arab American Institute during the 2006 Lebanon War. Syring pleaded guilty to the charges 12 June 2008,was sentenced to one year in prison 11 July 2008,and was released early,in January 2009. Syring was again indicted by a federal grand jury in the District of Columbia on very similar alleged offenses on February 21,2018,and was ultimately sentenced to 60 months In prison. At Syring's arraignment on March 14,2018,he pleaded not guilty before The Honorable Robin M. Meriweather,United States magistrate judge,United States District Court for the District of Columbia. The Honorable Randolph Moss United States District Judge presided at Syring's trial in 2019 and sentenced him to 60 months in prison. Syring was released early in June 2022 under the First Step Act

The killing of Ramarley Graham took place in the borough of the Bronx in New York City on February 2,2012. Richard Haste,a New York Police Department officer,shot Graham in the bathroom of the latter's apartment. The 18-year-old Graham was in possession of marijuana when Officer Haste tried to stop him on the street. Graham fled to his grandmother’s house,and went into the bathroom to flush the marijuana. Officer Haste forced his way into the building,kicked down the front door and then broke down the bathroom where he shot Ramarley Graham to death. Haste could be seen on surveillance cameras smiling and laughing with the responding officers and detectives—the same men who would later testify they had told Haste that Graham had a gun. Haste claimed to believe Graham had been reaching for a gun in his waistband,but no weapon was recovered.
