Patrick Liddell is a composer and video artist living in Oakland, California. He earned his Doctor of Music from Northwestern University in 2009. [1] His thesis is titled "Arrow To The Sun: Postmodernism As Compositional Tool", which outlines the contextual processes in postmodernist art, as well as includes a detailed description of the compositional, theoretical, and contextual framework for all his output. [2] The music from "Arrow To The Sun" was the basis for Liddell's first solo studio release. [3]

Career

He has worked as a member of many ensembles within many genres, including The Zvooks (ska, reggae, Chicago/Germany), [4] Function Ensemble (progressive rock, Melbourne/Chicago), [5] Maurice (math rock, Chicago), [6] The University of Chicago Gamelan, [7] aperiodic (art music, Chicago), [8] The University of California, Berkeley Gamelan (Javanese, Sari Raras), [9] Gamelan Encinal (new music, Mills College, Oakland, CA), [10] Gamelan Sekar Jaya (Balinese, Berkeley, CA), [11] Steady Eddy And The Shakers (soul and funk covers, San Francisco), [12] and ANiMA Art And Music (electronic, Seattle). [13]

Liddell has regularly performed live and improvised video as a guest with countless groups in Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as his own video/music/art under the moniker ontologist. [14] He designed Macintosh video software for this purpose, called ONTOplayer, which he released from Canzona Software in 2009. [15] His own music is an eclectic blend of 'art' and 'popular' styles, with direct references to jazz, soul, reggae, Renaissance, electronic, ethnic, progressive rock, Minimalism, video game, and film music. He has also designed and released Cantor's Comb: The Card Game, an original 64-card game featuring the music from the four albums in the cycle, on Canzona Games, in late 2020.

Liddell is most known for his video art experiment on YouTube "Video Room 1000", an homage to Alvin Lucier. [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22]

He is also known for his audio work and video collaborations with Vox Novus's 60x60. [23] In 2009, he created a video collaboration for the 60x60 2009 International Mix. [24] [25] In 2010 he created 360 one-minute videos in a collaboration for the project's 6 different hour-long "RED" mixes, with subsequent performances throughout the United States and internationally. [23] [26] [27] [28] The screening of this collaboration at the San Francisco Outsound Festival was hailed by Jason Victor Serinus, Special to The Examiner, "Expect it to stretch whatever boundaries you may not have thought you had." [29]

Liddell has taught music composition and theory at DePaul University., [30] and until recently worked at The Quarry Lane School in Dublin, CA as Music Director and Coordinator Of Visual And Performing Arts, also teaching International Baccalaureate courses in performance and composition. [31]

Balinese gamelan, for which he has composed numerous works, has compositions. Gamelan Sekar Jaya is a Balinese gamelan ensemble located in the San Francisco Bay Area. It has been called "the finest Balinese gamelan ensemble outside of Indonesia" by Indonesia's Tempo Magazine. It performs the music and dance of Bali in many different genres of Balinese gamelan, mainly gamelan gong kebyar, gamelan angklung, gender wayang, and gamelan jegog. Past performances have also featured ensembles playing in other styles as well, including gamelan joged bumbung, gamelan semar pegulingan, kecak, gender batel, gamelan gambuh, genggong, and beleganjur. 60x60 is a collection of 60 electroacoustic or acousmatic works from 60 different composers/artists, each work 60 seconds or less in duration. 60x60 project showcases sixty new works, each sixty seconds or less, by sixty composers in a continuous sixty-minute concert, for a one-hour cross-section of contemporary music. The 60x60 project was conceived and developed by the new music consortium, Vox Novus and its founder, Robert Voisey.

Robert Voisey is a composer and producer of electroacoustic and chamber music. He founded Vox Novus in 2000 to promote the music of contemporary composers and in 2001 created The American Composer Timeline, the first in-depth listing of American composers, spanning from 1690 to the present, to appear on the Internet. A producer of new music and multi-media concerts and events, Voisey is best known for producing the 60x60 project, which he started in 2003 in order to promote contemporary composers and their music. He also founded and directs the Composer's Voice Concert Series as well as the chamber music project Fifteen Minutes of Fame as well as vice president of programs for the Living Music Foundation.

Vox Novus is a New York City-based organization consisting of composers, musicians, and music enthusiasts which presents and supports new music. Vox Novus was founded by Robert Voisey to promote contemporary composers in 2000.

Richard Marriott is an American composer and performer. He has composed for film, television, dance, theater, opera, installations and video games. He is the founder and artistic director of the Club Foot Orchestra, an important modern ensemble for live music performance with silent films. His teachers include Dominick Argento and Paul Fetler at the University of Minnesota, Pauline Oliveros at UCSD, North Indian sarod master Ali Akbar Khan, shakuhachi master Masayuki Koga, and Balinese composers Nyoman Windha and Made Subandi.
