Patrick Shen (born 1975) is an American writer and director and producer. Shen is the founder of Transcendental Media. [1]
Shen directed the Emmy-nominated documentary We Served With Pride: The Chinese American Experience in WWII, a film about the Chinese American involvement in World War II. [2] [3] The film premiered at The Smithsonian in Washington D.C. in 1999 and would later be broadcast on PBS. While in Washington D.C. for the film's premiere, the cast and crew were invited to meet with President Clinton at the White House.
In 2001, Shen began production on his first feature-length documentary, Flight From Death . Flight from Death explores death as the root cause of much of human behavior and is inspired by the works and writings of cultural anthropologist and social theorist Ernest Becker. [4] [5] The film, narrated by actor, Gabriel Byrne, would go on to win a total of seven Best Documentary awards at U.S. film festivals. The film was released by the now defunct Go Kart Films in 2005.
Shen's second feature-length documentary, The Philosopher Kings , is about the wisdom found among janitorial workers employed by prestigious universities such as Cornell, Princeton, and Duke. [6] In 2009 the film premiered to sold-out audiences at the AFI Silverdocs Film Festival where it was nominated for Best Documentary and received the Emerging Cinematic Vision Award from the Camden International Film Festival. The film launched a movement to support Josue Lajeunesse – one of the characters featured in the film, a Haitian immigrant employed at Princeton University – and his lifelong dream to bring clean water to his village, La Source in Haiti.
La Source, Shen's third film, premiered at AFI Silverdocs Film Festival in June 2012. The film, narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Don Cheadle, follows the journey of Josue Lajuenesse, a Princeton janitor by day and cab driver by night, as he travels back to Haiti just weeks after the 2010 Haiti earthquake to begin a project to build a clean water system for his village. Lajeunesse and the film received a standing ovation at its premiere at Silverdocs where it was nominated for the Social Impact Award. [7]
Shen's fourth film, In Pursuit of Silence, premiered to sold-out audiences at CPH:DOX in November 2015 and in North America at South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2016. [8] , In Pursuit of Silence opened theatrically in more than 250 theaters all over the globe throughout 2016 and 2017. [9] [10]
The first of the AFI 100 Years... series of cinematic milestones, AFI's 100 Years... 100 American Movies is a list of the 100 best American movies, as determined by the American Film Institute from a poll of more than 1,500 artists and leaders in the film industry who chose from a list of 400 nominated movies. The 100-best list American films was unveiled in 1998. AFI released an updated list in 2007.
Street Fight is a 2005 documentary film by Marshall Curry, chronicling the 2002 Newark mayoral election which pitted upstart Cory Booker against the incumbent Sharpe James for Mayor of Newark, New Jersey. Other credits include Rory Kennedy, Liz Garbus, Mary Manhardt, Marisa Karplus, Catherine Jones, and Adam Etline. Street Fight screened at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival and was later aired on the PBS series P.O.V. on July 5, 2005, and CBC Newsworld in Canada on May 7, 2006. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Flight from Death (2003) is a documentary film that investigates the relationship of human violence to fear of death, as related to subconscious influences. The film describes death anxiety as a possible root cause of many human behaviors on a psychological, spiritual, and cultural level. It was directed by Patrick Shen, produced by Greg Bennick, and narrated by Gabriel Byrne.
Whitman College is one of seven residential colleges at Princeton University, New Jersey, United States. The college is named after Meg Whitman, a former CEO of eBay, who donated $30 million to build the college. The structures were designed by the architect Demetri Porphyrios, the winner of the 2004 Driehaus Prize. Trouble the Water is a 2008 documentary film produced and directed by Tia Lessin and Carl Deal. The film portrays a young couple surviving Hurricane Katrina, leading them to face their own troubled past during the storm's aftermath, in a community abandoned long before the hurricane hit. It features music by Massive Attack, Mary Mary, Citizen Cope, John Lee Hooker, The Roots, Dr. John and Blackkoldmadina. Trouble the Water is distributed by Zeitgeist Films and premiered in theaters in New York City and Los Angeles on August 22, 2008, followed by a national release.

Mugabe and the White African is a 2009 documentary film by Lucy Bailey & Andrew Thompson and produced by David Pearson & Elizabeth Morgan Hemlock. It has won many awards including the Grierson 2010 and been BAFTA and Emmy Nominated. The film documents the lives of a white Zimbabwean family who run a farm in Chegutu, as they challenge the Fast Track land redistribution programme that redistributed white-owned estates, a legacy of colonialism and UDI, beginning in 2000. The film follows Mike Campbell, his son-in-law Ben Freeth, and their family as they challenge Robert Mugabe and the Zimbabwean government before the Southern African Development Community tribunal for racial discrimination and human rights violations. The film premiered in the UK on 21 October 2009 at the London Film Festival.
