Paul Kean

Paul Kean is a New Zealand musician and music producer.

Kean first played in the Basket Cases (aka "The Detroit Haemorrhoids") in 1977/78.

When The Enemy lost Mick Dawson, Paul Kean joined as bass player along with Jane Walker on keyboards to form the short lived Toy Love in 1979/80. The CUTS CD compilation of Toy Love singles and their self-titled album along with a second disc of demos was released on Flying Nun in 2005. In 2012 Paul Kean was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall Of Fame and won the Herald Legacy Award as a member of Toy Love.

Through the 1980s Paul went on to do live sound engineering for many of the Flying Nun acts, notably The Clean, The Chills, The Verlaines and Sneaky Feelings. [1]

Kean managed and produced two Playthings singles and an album, briefly joining them on bass in 1982.

A collaboration with Robert Scott in Thanks to Llamas followed with the formation of The Bats along with Kaye Woodward and Malcolm Grant. [2] By 2011 The Bats had produced their eight album to add to their catalogue along with two compilations and a host of EPs and singles. Many of these were produced or co-produced by Paul Kean, who also handled most of the mixing.

Kean currently lives and works in Christchurch for the Council's Events team. He is also actively involved in the bands Minisnap and The Bats.

Toy Love was a New Zealand new wave/punk rock band that originated in Dunedin and was active from 1978 to 1980. Members included Chris Knox, Alec Bathgate and Paul Kean.

The Verlaines are a rock band from Dunedin, New Zealand. Formed in 1981 by Graeme Downes, Craig Easton, Anita Pillai, Phillip Higham and Greg Kerr, the band went through multiple line-ups.

Bailter Space band

Bailter Space is an atmospheric noise rock band that formed in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1987 as Nelsh Bailter Space; they had previously recorded as The Gordons. Its members are Alister Parker, John Halvorsen, Brent McLachlan. After releasing seven studio albums, numerous EPs/singles and a career retrospective compilation, Bailter Space went on an extended hiatus in 2004. They returned in August 2008 to play the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan.

Shayne P Carter is a musician best known for leading Straitjacket Fits from 1986–1994, and as the only permanent member of Dimmer (1995–2012).

The Chills band

The Chills are a New Zealand rock band formed in Dunedin in 1980. The band is essentially the continuing project of singer/songwriter Martin Phillipps, who is the group's sole constant member. For a time in the 1990s, the act was billed as Martin Phillipps & The Chills. In the 1980s and 1990s, The Chills had some significant chart success in their homeland, and were a cult band in other parts of the world as one of the earliest proponents of the Dunedin sound.

Straitjacket Fits New Zealand rock band

Straitjacket Fits formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1986 and were a prominent band in the Flying Nun label's second wave of the Dunedin sound.

David Auld Kilgour is a New Zealand songwriter, musician and recording artist from Dunedin. He first started playing guitar as a teenager in the late 1970s. With brother Hamish he formed The Clean, a group that went on to become one of the most popular and most respected bands in New Zealand.

The Bats are an influential New Zealand rock band formed in 1982 in Christchurch by Paul Kean (bass), Malcolm Grant (drums), Robert Scott and Kaye Woodward. Though primarily a Christchurch band, The Bats have strong links to Dunedin and are usually grouped in with the Dunedin sound musicians that emerged in the early 1980s. The band has retained the same four members from 1982 to the present day.

Able Tasmans were an indie pop band from Auckland, New Zealand, initially formed as a duo in 1983. They released four albums and two EPs on Flying Nun Records before splitting up in 1996.
