Paul K. Seaton (born October 1,1945) is a former Republican member of the Alaska House of Representatives,who represented the southern Kenai Peninsula between 2003 and 2018. [1]
In 2002,Seaton ran in the Republican primary against incumbent Drew Scazi,winning with 60% of the vote. [2]
Since then,he has chaired the Education Committee,State Affairs Committee,Health &Social Services Committee,Resources Committee and the Special Committee on Fisheries. He also served on the Commerce,Community &Economic Development,Education &Early Development,Environmental Conservation,and Law Finance Subcommittees,for the 26th Legislature. [3]
Seaton won his 2016 Republican primary with 48% of the vote,followed by John Cox with 27%,and Mary Wythe with 25%. [4] After being elected without general election opposition to his 7th term in the state house,Seaton joined a majority coalition of Democrats,Independents,and two other Republicans,with an avowed goal of ameliorating the state's budget deficit,the latter a product of declining oil revenues,budgeting,and prior taxation restructuring. Seaton was chosen to co-chair the house finance committee. Tuckerman Babcock,chair of the Alaska Republican Party,informed Seaton by letter that the party will recruit and support a primary opponent against him in 2018. [5] [6] While campaigning early in 2016,Seaton said he doubted the Legislature could continue to successfully organize "simply on partisan grounds," and that legislators needed to address the budgetary crisis. [7]
Seaton filed for re-election as a nonpartisan candidate and ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. Three Republicans filed to challenge him in the general election:Jon Cox,Sarah Vance,and Hank Kroll. He lost to Sarah Vance in the general election on November 6,2018,after advancing from the primary on August 21,2018. [8]
Seaton has a wife,Tina,and two children,Tawny and Rand. Seaton graduated from Ventura College with an A.A. in 1965;from the University of Alaska,Fairbanks with a B.S. in 1966 and an M.A. in 1969,respectively;and from the University of California,San Diego with an M.S. 1972. He attended the University of California,Santa Barbara from 1974 to 1976 where he studied the crustacean population ecology. [9] He also graduated from AVTEC (Alaska's Technology Institute) in Diesel Mechanics in 1979. [10]
The Alaska State Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is a bicameral institution consisting of the 40-member Alaska House of Representatives and the 20-member Alaska Senate. There are 40 House Districts (1–40) and 20 Senate Districts (A–T). With a total of 60 lawmakers,the Alaska State Legislature is the smallest bicameral state legislature in the United States and the second-smallest of all state legislatures. There are no term limits for either chamber. The Alaska State Legislature meets in the Alaska State Capitol in Juneau. The current meeting since 2023 is the 33rd Alaska State Legislature. The previous meeting,the 32nd Alaska State Legislature,met from 2021 to 2023.
Andrew Verne Marrou is an American politician who served in the Alaska House of Representatives from the 5th district as a member of the Libertarian Party from 1985 to 1987. He was the Libertarian vice-presidential nominee in the 1988 election and presidential nominee in the 1992 election.
Lyda N. Green was an American educator and Republican politician in the U.S. state of Alaska. Green,as a political newcomer,was elected to the Alaska Senate in 1994,defeating a 22-year Democratic incumbent in a district representing most of the population of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. Two Democratic members of the Alaska House of Representatives,also from the Matanuska-Susitna Valley,were defeated in the same election. Matthew W. Claman is an American politician and attorney serving as a member of the Alaska Senate since 2023,representing West Anchorage. Catherine Norah Muñoz is an American politician who was a Republican member of the Alaska House of Representatives,who from 2009 to 2017 represented the 34th District. She served as Co-Chair of the Community and Regional Affairs Committee,Vice-Chair of the Education Committee,and served two terms on the House Finance Committee. She served as Co-Chair of the Community &Regional Affairs Committee and Vice-Chair of the Education Committee. Muñoz has been a small business owner since 1988. She was appointed by Governor Michael J. Dunleavy in 2018 to serve as the Deputy Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Muñoz was a third-generation member of the Alaska Legislature. Her father served in the Alaska House and Senate,her grandfather as the mayor of Douglas,Alaska and in the Territorial and State Senates,and her grandmother served in the Territorial House.
Bob Herron is a Democratic former member of the Alaska House of Representatives,representing the 38th District from 2009 until 2017. Herron was the Majority Whip,granting him the distinction of being the only Representative in the United States elected as a Democrat who served as a statewide leader of a Republican party-majority legislative body. The official job of the Whip is to make sure that House members vote in line with Republican leadership.

Catherine Andrea Giessel is an American politician. A member of the Republican Party,she has served as Majority Leader of the Alaska Senate since 2023. From 2013 to 2021,Giessel represented District N in the Alaska Senate,including Northeast Anchorage,Anchorage Hillside and the Turnagain Arm communities of Bird,Girdwood,Indian,and Anchorage,all within the Municipality of Anchorage. First elected in 2010 while identifying with Tea Party values,she has also served as the vice-chair of the state Republican Party and had a career in nursing. Following redistricting,she was elected to a different senate seat in 2012. Giessel serves as chair of the Resources Committee and is a member of the Senate Majority Caucus. After Senate President Pete Kelly was unseated in 2018,Giessel was elected president of the Alaska Senate,a post she held until 2021. Giessel returned to the Alaska Senate in 2023,representing the newly configured District E after defeating incumbent Republican Roger Holland. She serves as Senate majority leader in the 33rd Legislature,overseeing a coalition caucus of eight Republicans and nine Democrats.
Lora H. Reinbold is an American politician who was a member of the Alaska Senate. She was a member of the Alaska House from 2013 to 2019,representing District 26. In 2018,Reinbold was elected to the Alaska State Senate representing the G district. She served in the State Senate from 2019 until retiring in 2023. From 2015 to the end of her tenure,Reinbold was the only member of the Alaska State Legislature unaffiliated with a caucus organization,as she was ejected from the Republican-led majority caucus in March 2015.

The 2018 Alaska House of Representatives election were held on Tuesday,November 6,2018,with the primary election on August 21,2018. Voters in the 40 districts of the Alaska House of Representatives elected their representatives. The elections coincided with the elections for other state offices,including the gubernatorial election and the state senate elections. While Republicans gained a nominal majority in the chamber,when the new House convened in 2019,Democratic members formed a coalition with independents and dissident Republicans to re-elect Bryce Edgmon as speaker.
