Paul Warwick Thompson CBE FRSA (born 9 August 1959) is the current Chair of the British Council. [1] He was Vice-Chancellor of the Royal College of Art from 2009 to 2024. [2]
Thompson was educated at Bryanston School,the University of Bristol (BA) and the University of East Anglia (MA,PhD). [3]
Thompson worked as a scriptwriter and researcher for the Design Council 1987–88. He then joined the Design Museum as curator of contemporary design and from 1993 to 2001 was its director. [3]
During 2001–09,Thompson was director of the Cooper Hewitt,Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City,USA. In 2009,he took up his post at the Royal College of Art. [4] He was a trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum,London,from 2009-2023, [5] and was on the board of visitors of the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford from 2013-2019. [6] He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Universities UK from 2020-2023. [7]
He is a member of the Wellcome Collection Programme Advisory Committee at the Wellcome Trust,London. He is an adjunct professor at Imperial College's Institute for Global Health Innovation. He co-directs the Helix Centre with Professor Lord Ara Darzi. [8] Since 2020 he has been a member of the Board of Trustees,Creative UK. [9]
He was awarded a CBE in the King’s Birthday Honours in 2024 for services to the Arts. [10]
Cooper Hewitt,Smithsonian Design Museum is a design museum at the Andrew Carnegie Mansion in Manhattan,New York City,along the Upper East Side's Museum Mile. It is one of 19 Smithsonian Institution museums and one of three Smithsonian facilities located in New York City,along with the National Museum of the American Indian's George Gustav Heye Center in Bowling Green and the Archives of American Art New York Research Center in the Flatiron District. Unlike other Smithsonian museums,Cooper Hewitt charges an admissions fee. It is the only museum in the United States devoted to historical and contemporary design. Its collections and exhibitions explore design aesthetic and creativity from throughout the United States' history.
William Grant Moggridge,RDI was an English designer,author and educator who cofounded the design company IDEO and was director of Cooper Hewitt,Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. He was a pioneer in adopting a human-centred approach in design,and championed interaction design as a mainstream design discipline. Among his achievements,he designed the first laptop computer,the GRiD Compass,was honoured for Lifetime Achievement from the National Design Awards,and given the Prince Philip Designers Prize. He was quoted as saying,"If there is a simple,easy principle that binds everything I have done together,it is my interest in people and their relationship to things."
Sir Robert Alan Langlands FRSE FRCP (Hon.) FRCGP (Hon.) FRCS (Edin.) (Hon.) FRCPSG (Hon.) FFPH FCGI FIA is a former vice-chancellor of the University of Leeds. He is notable for past service as the fourth chief executive of the National Health Service executive in England (1994–2000),as principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Dundee (2000–2009),and Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (2009–2013).

Paul Gerard O'Prey is an academic leader and author who was Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Roehampton,London from 2004 until 2019. In 2019 he was appointed chair of the Edward James Foundation,which owns a large rural estate in the South Downs and runs West Dean College of Arts and Conservation. After working in various senior roles at the University of Bristol,in 2004 O'Prey was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Roehampton in south-west London,where he was also Professor of Modern Literature.

He has been chairman of the Victoria and Albert museum (2015–23) and was co-chair of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Pageant,a complex event with more than 10,000 military from the UK and Commonwealth,and performers from across the nation. He is an ambassador for the Landmark Trust and a patron of the Elephant Family.
Dianne Marie Willcocks CBE DL was the Vice-Chancellor of York St John University until retirement in April 2010 and is a former Deputy Principal of Sheffield Hallam University.
Sir John Irving Bell is a Canadian-British immunologist and geneticist. From 2006 to 2011,he was President of the United Kingdom's Academy of Medical Sciences,and since 2002 he has held the Regius Chair of Medicine at the University of Oxford. He was since 2006 Chairman of the Office for Strategic Coordination of Health Research (OSCHR) but in 2020 became a normal member. Bell was selected to the Vaccine Taskforce sometime before 1 July 2020. Bell is also on the board of directors of the SOE quango Genomics England.

Dr Joanna Kennedy OBE FREng FICE,,is a British civil engineer and project manager who was Global Leader for Programme and Project Management at Arup until 2013. She is a patron of Women into Science and Engineering (WISE),which she helped launch in 1984. From 2015 until 2023 she was a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery,latterly as deputy chair of the Trustee Board,and she chaired the project board for the Inspiring People redevelopment which was completed on time for the gallery's reopening,after three years closure,in June 2023.
