Paulette R. Dillard is an American academic administrator and medical technologist. She is the 18th president of Shaw University.
Dillard is from Mount Airy,North Carolina. She graduated from Barber–Scotia College and completed a M.B.A. at Belmont University. Dillard earned a M.S. in biology at Tennessee State University. [1] She completed a Ph.D. in cell biology at Clark Atlanta University. [2]
Dillard began her career at International Clinical Laboratories in Nashville,Tennessee. She was a scientist for 25 years in the field of diagnostic laboratory medicine. She is a medical technologist certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. [1] She held leadership positions at GlaxoSmithKline,Quest Diagnostics,and the Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development at Clark Atlanta University. Dillard served as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college of arts and sciences at Shaw University. [3] She became interim president in July 2017. On September 8,2018,she succeeded Tashni-Ann Dubroy as the 18th president of Shaw University. [2]

Founded on December 1,1865,Shaw University is the oldest HBCU to begin offering courses in the Southern United States. The school had its origin in the formation of a theological class of freedmen in the Guion Hotel. The following year it moved to a large wooden building,at the corner of Blount and Cabarrus Streets in Raleigh,where it continued as the Raleigh Institute until 1870. In 1870,the school moved to its current location on the former property of Confederate General Barringer and changed its name to the Shaw Collegiate Institute,in honor of Elijah Shaw. In 1875,the school was officially chartered with the State of North Carolina as Shaw University.

Medical laboratory scientists may also assist healthcare providers with test selection and specimen collection and are responsible for prompt verbal delivery of critical lab results. Medical Laboratory Scientist in health settings also play an important role in the diagnosis of diseses conditions. An estimated 70% of medical decisions are based on laboratory test results and MLS contributions affect 95% of a health system's costs.

Charles DeWitt Watts was an African-American surgeon and activist for the poor. Watts was the first surgeon of African-American ancestry in North Carolina. Earning his medical degree in 1943 from Howard University College,he was the first African-American board-certified surgeon to serve in North Carolina. After surgical training at Freedman's Hospital in Washington,D.C.,in 1949,he moved to Durham,North Carolina,in 1950 and established a clinic to provide access to medical services for the poor. Breaking the social customs of racial obstacles,he advocated for certification of African-American medical students. He also became a member of many professional colleges including the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine and the American College of Surgeons. He served as chief of surgery at Durham's Lincoln Hospital and was later one of the key figures in converting it to the Lincoln Community Health Center,a low-priced clinic for the poor.
