Pedder Road is a busy arterial road in South Mumbai passing through the affluent Cumballa Hill neighbourhood. It was named after Mr. W. G. Pedder, Municipal Commissioner (1879). He was in the Bombay Civil Service, 1855-1879, and on his retirement was appointed Secretary to the Revenue and Commerce Department at the India Office. [2]
South Mumbai is the Mumbai City district which is the southernmost precinct of Greater Mumbai. It extends from Colaba in the south to Mahim and Sion in the north. It comprises the city's main business localities, making it the wealthiest urban precinct in India. Property prices in South Mumbai are by far the highest in India and among the highest in the world.
It is said to be resting on what was first known as Padam Hill. Its present name is Gopalrao Deshmukh Marg, after a social activist and reformer Gopalrao Deshmukh, though as with a very large number of Mumbai's roads it is commonly referred to by its former name (usually incorrectly spelled as Peddar).
The road begins at the well-known intersection of Kemp's Corner and extends down Cumballa Hill past the Mahalaxmi temple to the Haji Ali intersection. The very first flyover built in Mumbai connected Hughes Road to Pedder Road at Kemp's Corner. Since at least the early 20th century, it is considered to be a posh residential area with some of the flats fetching a price of over Rs.10 crore as of 2006.
Kemps Corner is an upmarket neighbourhood in South Mumbai. It is flanked by Altamount Road on one side and Malabar Hill on the other. It lies at the intersection of Breach Candy, Warden Road, Pedder Road and Nepean Sea Road.
Mahalaxmi Temple is one of the most famous temples of Mumbai situated on Bhulabhai Desai Road in Mahalaxmi area. It is dedicated to Mahalakshmi the central deity of Devi Mahatmyam. The temple was built in 1831 by Dhakji Dadaji (1760–1846), a Hindu merchant.

Dr. Gopalrao Deshmukh was the first President of the Indian Medical Association and the first Mayor of Bombay after independence. He lived on Pedder Road in a palatial home that later made way for a multi-story building. A leading citizen of Mumbai, he was the personal friend of Sir Jamshetji Kanga. Of his notable descendants one can name Dr Uday Dokras,international author of Human Resource books, who is his grandson.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is a national voluntary organisation of Doctors of Modern Scientific System of Medicine in India, which looks after the interest of doctors as well as the well being of the community at large. It was established in 1928 as the All India Medical Association, renamed "Indian Medical Association" in 1930. It is a society registered under The Societies Act of India.
Pedder Road came to be renamed in his honour. The road ends in a flyover which was known as the Kemp's Corner flyover before but has been rechristened as "Dr Gopalrao Deshmukh Uddanpul(Flyover)".
In February 2000, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai carried out a study on traffic in the area which found that 94,000 vehicles used the route every day at that time. [3] The same study also found that the average number of cars owned by a family living in Pedder Road was 2.3. [4]
According to a Times of India article in 2006, in new constructions coming up on Pedder Road (among other localities), transactions "routinely take place" at over 1,00,000 Rupees (2000 USD) per square foot. [5]
Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai was founded by philanthropist Seth Lokoomal Chanrai along with surgeon Shantilal Jamnadas Mehta. The hospital was formally inaugurated on 6 July 1973 by the erstwhile Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.

Maheshwari Udyan, also known by its former name King's Circle, is a park in Matunga, Mumbai. It was named after George V, the King-Emperor. The part of the road that leads to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was formerly called Vincent Road. It was changed to Dr. Ambedkar Road almost 45 years ago. King's Circle station and Matunga railway station are next to each other, the former on the Harbour and the latter on the Central line.

The Mazagaon Fort was a British fort in Mazagaon, Bombay, in the Indian state of Maharashtra, built around 1680. The fort was razed by the Siddi general, Yakut Khan in June 1690. The fort was located at the present-day Joseph Baptista Gardens, atop Bhandarwada Hill outside the Dockyard Road railway station.
Deshmukh or Dēśamukh is a historical title conferred to the rulers of a Dēśamukhi. Deshmukh is the greatest position given to a landlord in India. Anna Flyover, also known as Gemini Flyover, is a dual-armed grade separator in the central business district of Chennai, India. Built in 1973 and dubbed one of the top-rated flyovers in the country, it is Asia's First Grade Separator, the first flyover in Chennai and the third Flyover in India, after the ones at Kemps Corner and Marine Drive in Mumbai. It was the longest flyover in the country when it was built. Its main purpose is to allow traffic movement on Mount Road—now renamed Anna Salai—near Nungambakkam High Road to continue unhindered by the cross traffic. The presence of the Gemini Studios, which was demolished later, resulted in the flyover coming to be known as Gemini Flyover and the area being referred to as the Gemini Circle.

Sir Chintaman Dwarakanath Deshmukh, CIE, ICS was an Indian civil servant and the first Indian to be appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India in 1943 by the British Raj authorities. He subsequently served as the Finance Minister in the Union Cabinet (1950–1956). It was during this time that he also became a founding member of the Governing Body of NCAER, the National Council of Applied Economic Research in New Delhi, India's first independent economic policy institute established in 1956 at the behest of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. After resignation from Union Cabinet he worked as Chairman of UGC(1956–1961). He served as Vice-Chancellor of University of Delhi (1962–67). He was also President of Indian Statistical Institute from 1945 to 1964, Honorary Chairman of National Book Trust (1957–60). He founded India International Center in 1959 and served as Lifetime President of it. He was also chairman of Indian Institute of Public Administration.

The Jogeshwari – Vikhroli Link Road, commonly referred to by the abbreviation JVLR, is a 10.6-kilometre-long (6.6 mi) road in Mumbai that links Jogeshwari in the Western Suburbs to Vikhroli in the Eastern Suburbs. The JVLR is an important arterial road connecting the Western Express Highway and Eastern Express Highway. The JVLR was opened to traffic in 1994. At the time, it provided the only direct east–west link between these Express Highways. Prior to 1994, the link road was available for traffic only in segments.
