Penelope Austin is an Australian singer-songwriter. She performs electropop music. She released her debut extended play, The Beautiful Dark on 30 May 2013. She has co-written several tracks with United States record producer and songwriter, Robert Conley including "Smoke into Flames" (October 2012), "A Place to Call Home" (March 2013), and "Don't Rescue Me" (May). During 2013 "A Place to Call Home" was used for the Australian TV series of the same name. Austin and Conley co-wrote "The Dark Collide" with J. J. Abrams and Charles Scott. Austin's performance of "The Dark Collide" was used on the Australian version of the Star Trek Into Darkness soundtrack (April 2013).

Early life

Penelope Austin [1] [2] was in born in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. [3] After her mother died, when Austin was 14, she taught herself to play guitar. By the following year she was writing her first song. [4] Her early influences included artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac and Cat Stevens. Since turning 18 she has spent most of her time overseas, including being based in New York. [3] [4] During her travels she concentrated on collecting inspiration to help her develop her songwriting skills.

Career

"Smoke into Flames"

In 2011 Austin returned to Australia and in 2012 she started writing again with longtime collaborator, United States-born producer and songwriter Robert Conley, who was based in Sydney. [5] She released "Smoke into Flames", written by Austin and Conley, [2] as a single in October 2012. [6] A music video for the single was shot in an abandoned town near Salton Sea, California, which was directed by Imogene Barron, and Ben Sullivan was the director of photography. [4] It has a sequence of stylised visions of Austin as she explores the town.

"Smoke into Flames" was available on iTunes but was not released to radio. In October the song was featured in the 2012 Brand Campaign for SoHo Channel (Foxtel) in Australia. [7] From December a second track, "Don't Rescue Me" (written by Austin, Conley and Joel Chapman), [8] was used in the HBO summer brand campaign which ran into January. [7] The two-minute ad ran in cinemas and on radio for HBO series including True Blood, Game of Thrones, and Girls. [7] In May 2013 "Don't Rescue Me" was issued as a single on iTunes. [9]

The Beautiful Dark

In March 2013 Australian TV network Channel Seven used Austin's track, "A Place to Call Home", to promote their drama series of the same name. [10] Austin had teamed up with Conley again to write the track. [11] Also in March it was made available on iTunes, [12] peaking at number 26. Rebecca Starford of The Guardian was not impressed by Austin's "whiny tones" and was prepared to dislike the series due to the ad. [10]

On 30 May 2013 Austin's first extended play, The Beautiful Dark, was released. [13] All five tracks were written by Austin and Conley; with both the original and acoustic versions of "A Place to Call Home" as well as "Don't Rescue Me", "Smoke into Flames" and a previously unreleased track, "Dangerzone". [13] "Dangerzone" had been short-listed for the Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition. [4] [14]

In March Austin and Conley won a competition to collaborate with US producer, J. J. Abrams, on a track for the Australian version of the science fiction film, Star Trek Into Darkness (April 2013). [15] [16] The pair wrote the lyrics to music by Abrams and Charles Scott for the track, "The Dark Collide". [17] Austin described how it had taken her and Conley under two hours to write the lyrics and melody "Robert and I have a tendency to collaborate quickly, so for us it was a very natural process". [18] The track is featured during a club scene in the film, five other versions were used in different countries. [16] Austin declared that it was a "phenomenal opportunity that six artists around the world have been offered". [16]

In late 2013 Austin was the featured vocalist on two club tracks. "Animal Heart" by Denzal Park featuring Austin was co-written by Austin with Cameron Denny and Paul Zala; [19] and was released on Beatport on 25 November and iTunes Australia on 29 November. "Home" by Ivan Gough, Walden and Jebu featuring Austin was released on Beatport on 9 December; it is a remix of Austin's "A Place to Call Home". [20] It was played by Pete Tong several times on his BBC radio program.

By mid-2013 Austin and Conley were also working on her debut album, she has found it "difficult at times because I think I have finalised the tracks then along comes another one that I love and we're reassessing the whole project over! ... I feel a lot of the time with my music the instrumentation sounds peaceful – eloquent and silent. Yet the words are quite confronting. I think ultimately that's why I'm drawn to writing about them – they scare me". [21] In May 2014, Austin travelled to London to attend a songwriting camp and continue working on her debut album.

"Under the Milky Way" is a single by Australian alternative rock band the Church, released on 15 February 1988, and appears on their fifth studio album Starfish. The song was written by bass guitarist and lead vocalist Steve Kilbey and his then-girlfriend Karin Jansson of Curious (Yellow). It peaked at No. 22 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart, No. 24 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 and No. 25 on the New Zealand Singles Chart; it also appeared in the Dutch Single Top 100. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1989, the song won 'Single of the Year'. It was issued simultaneously in both 7" vinyl and 12" vinyl formats by Arista Records (internationally) and Mushroom Records.

Her debut extended play, Said One to the Other, topped iTunes in Australia and she signed with London-based publisher, Little Victories, a subsidiary of Sony/ATV. Gyan Evans, who performs as Gyan, is an Australian singer-songwriter and record producer. She began her musical career in the Sydney band Haiku before winning the 1986 grand final in the local version of the TV talent quest Star Search. This led to a recording contract with Warner Music, which resulted in her October 1989 debut self-titled album. It peaked in the top 30 on the ARIA Albums Chart and provided "Wait", which reached the top 20 on the ARIA Singles Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1990 she won the ARIA Award for Best New Talent.

Night of the Wolverine is the third album by Dave Graney 'n' the Coral Snakes. The album was released in April 1993 on Mercury Records. With Graney on vocals, the Coral Snakes line-up included his wife Clare Moore on drums and percussion; Robin Casinader on keyboards, violin and mandolin; Rob Hayward on lead guitar; and Andrew Picouleau on bass guitar. Tex Perkins of tour mates, The Cruel Sea, guested on lead vocals for "Night of the Wolverine II" with Amanda Mitchell on backing vocals. The title track and "You're Just Too Hip, Baby" reached No. 48 and No. 59, respectively, on Triple J's Hottest 100 for 1993. Night of the Wolverine earned an ARIA Award nomination for 'Best Alternative Release' at the 1994 ARIA Music Awards.

Dedicated to the Ones We Love is the fifth studio album by the Australian folk rock group The Blackeyed Susans and was released on 23 April 2001. It is the first issued on their own label, Teardrop, and was distributed through Shock Records. As the name suggests, it is a collection of cover versions, focusing on songs that have influenced and inspired the band. It includes songs made popular by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, The Crystals, Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, and, most poignantly, The Triffids. The Triffids were the previous band of David McComb, who had died in 1999 and was a founding member of The Blackeyed Susans. The album was well received by the public and lauded by the critics, a national tour followed keeping the band busy until the end of the year.

Giselle Rosselli is an Australian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, sometimes seen mononymously as Giselle. Rosselli provided lead vocals and wrote lyrics for the first original song "Crave You" by indie electro DJ duo Flight Facilities. The track was listed at No. 19 on the Hottest 100 of 2010 by listeners of national radio station Triple J. Also in 2010 Rosselli's track, "They Stay Down Deep", was featured on the United Kingdom TV series Skins. In April 2012 Rosselli released a solo single, "Silk".
