James Madison University is a public research university in Harrisonburg,Virginia. Founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg,the institution was renamed Madison College in 1938 in honor of President James Madison and then James Madison University in 1977. It is situated in the Shenandoah Valley,just west of Massanutten Mountain.

Guilford College is a private liberal arts college in Greensboro,North Carolina. Guilford has both traditional students and students who attend its Center for Continuing Education (CCE). Founded in 1837 by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers),Guilford's program offerings include such majors as Peace and Conflict Studies and Community and Justice Studies,both rooted in the college's history as a Quaker institution. The name "Dukes" is derived from Samuel Page Duke,the university's second president. The Dukes play as members of the Sun Belt Conference. JMU was a charter member of the Colonial Athletic Association,which sponsors sports at the NCAA Division I level. In football,JMU participates in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of Division I,formerly known as Division I-A. The Dukes officially left the CAA and joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2022,participating in Division I FBS football and other sports sponsored by the conference.

Jean Louise Harris was an American physician and politician. The first black woman to graduate from the Medical College of Virginia,she went on to serve on the faculty there before being appointed Virginia Secretary of Human Resources by Governor John N. Dalton. Harris moved to Minnesota,where she ran in the Republican primary for lieutenant governor in 1990 and eventually for mayor of Eden Prairie. She was mayor until her death from lung cancer in 2001.
Dorothy Ann Ortner Horrell is an American educator,university administrator,and philanthropy administrator. From 2016 to 2020,she held the post of Chancellor of University of Colorado Denver. She was previously president of both Red Rocks Community College and the Colorado Community College System,and president and CEO of the Bonfils–Stanton Foundation. In 2009,she was appointed by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper to the Colorado State University Board of Governors,which she also served as chair for a two-year term. Active on the boards of many community organizations,she was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 2018.
