The Penn Quakers fencing team is the intercollegiate fencing team for the University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The team competes in the Ivy League, within the NCAA Division I.
The university first fielded a team in 1925. The team is currently coached by Andy Ma, former coach of several members of the Chinese National Fencing Team. [3] [4]
Penn has historically fielded a strong fencing team, capturing the national title three times since the program's inception in 1925. The program has produced 11 Olympians, most recently Cliff Bayer and Tamir Bloom in 2000. [5]

Allan S. Kwartler, born in New York City, was an American sabre and foil fencer. He was Pan-American sabre champion, 3-time Olympian, and twice a member of sabre teams that earned 4th-place in Olympic Games.
Albert "Albie" Axelrod was an American foil fencer.
Allan Louis Neville Jay MBE was a British five-time-Olympian foil and épée fencer, and world champion.
Tamir Bloom is an American epee fencer.
Soren Hunter Miles S Thompson is an American épée fencer, team world champion, and two-time Olympian. He represented the United States in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, where he reached the quarterfinals and came in 7th, the best US result in the event since 1956 and at the time the second-best US result of all time. He also represented the US in the 2012 Olympics in London. Thompson won a gold medal and world championship in the team épée event at the 2012 World Fencing Championships. He was inducted into the USA Fencing Hall of Fame in 2018, and the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.
Byron Lester Krieger was an American foil, sabre and épée fencer. Krieger represented the United States in the Olympics in 1952 in Helsinki and 1956 in Melbourne, and in the 1951 Pan American Games where he won two gold medals.
The 17th Maccabiah Games, held in Israel, were an incarnation of the 'Jewish Olympics.' They attracted the largest attendance of any Maccabiah Games, including more than 900 representatives from the United States, almost 500 from Australia, and more than 2,000 from Israel, bringing the total participants to more than 7,700 from 55 countries.
Twenty-one countries sent 980 athletes to compete in the 1957 5th Maccabiah Games, an international Jewish athletics competition similar to the Olympics. The opening ceremony on September 15, 1957, was held in Ramat Gan Stadium, with athletes parading before Israeli President Yitzhak Ben Zvi.
The 3rd Maccabiah took place during Sukkot from September 27 to October 8, 1950, with 17 countries competing. It was the third edition of the Maccabiah Games and the first held since the independence of the State of Israel; 15 years after the previous Maccabiah. Israel won the 1950 Maccabiah Games, Great Britain was second, South Africa third, the United States fourth, Canada fifth, and Austria sixth.
Eight hundred ninety athletes representing 23 countries competed in the 1953 4th Maccabiah Games, held September 20 to 29, in 18 branches of sports.
Daniel Bukantz was an American four-time individual United States national foil fencing champion, Maccabiah Games individual foil champion, four-time Olympic fencer, fencing referee, and a dentist. He has been inducted into the United States Fencing Hall of Fame, the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
Abram "Abe" DreyerCohen was an American Olympic foil, épée, and sabre fencer.
Peter Bakonyi was a Hungarian-born Canadian Olympic foil and épée fencer. He competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He was also a six-time Canadian national fencing champion, 18-time British Columbia fencing champion, three-time medalist at the Commonwealth Games, four-time silver medalist at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Paul Todd Makler Jr. is an American Olympic saber and épée fencer.
Adrian Brooke Makler was an American Olympic foil and épée fencer.
Christopher Stuart O'Loughlin is an American Olympic épée fencer.
Eli Dershwitz is an American left-handed saber fencer, five-time individual Pan American champion, two-time Olympian, and the 2023 saber World Champion.
Eric Tennyson Sollee was an American fencer and fencing coach. He fenced at Harvard University, where he earned National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) All-America honors. He coached at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard, and the Carroll Center for the Blind, among others. As a coach, he is notable for finding ways to quickly develop competitive fencers and for introducing a paradigm shift in how to fence against classical fencers. Sollee trained a number of top competitors, including Olympians.
