Penniless (previously Penniless People of Bulgaria) is a rock band, formed in Nakkila, Finland in 1988. As of June 2019, Penniless has released ten studio albums (the first four as Penniless People of Bulgaria), as well as nineteen singles/EPs. Penniless is currently signed to Tampere-based label Soit se silti.

Career

Despite having received mainly favourable reviews, Penniless has enjoyed moderate commercial success. The Adam's Apple Pie single spent 13 weeks on Finnish public radio station Radiomafia's playlist in 2001. [1] The band reached The Official Finnish Charts for the first time ever in 2010 with the A Cab To The City album, which spent one week at No. 30 on the Official Finnish Albums Chart. [2]

In 1998, Penniless covered Eva Dahlgren's song Sommarbarn for the Yle X3M radio station's compilation album entitled Extrema Sommarhits Volume 1. [3] The song was also released on the Cyberhand CD EP.

Penniless has toured mainly in its native Finland, but the band has also supported American band Mucky Pup on their European tour in 1996 [4] and performed at the 1998 Roskilde Festival in Denmark. [5] Penniless has performed several times at the Swedish Trästockfestivalen, [6] [7] an annual free festival in Skellefteå, founded and arranged by Joakim Wallström. [8] [9] Wallström is also the founder of Penniless' long-time record label A Westside Fabrication. [10]

Musical style and influences

Finnish monthly music magazine Soundi has described Penniless’ music as "beautiful and catchy melodies, stellar guitars and a matching 'tongue in cheek' attitude". [11] PopMatters highlighted Penniless' "artful employment of every indie trick and guitar hook in the book"., [12] while Nöjesguiden praised the band's "unusually distinctive talent for coming up with great refrains", but rued its "lack of individuality in an atonal jungle of similar bands". [13]

Music critics have compared Penniless to a number of mostly American rock bands, including Pixies, Hüsker Dü, Weezer and Nirvana. [14] [15] [16] [17] Penniless guitarist, vocalist and main songwriter Ossi Alisaari has cited The Who and Sonic Youth among his influences. [18]

Side projects

Outside Penniless, Ossi Alisaari sings and plays guitar in the band Salaliitto. [19] Kimmo Kurittu is the bass player of Maj Karma. Pekka Alisaari has produced albums for Finnish acts Euforia and Markus Perttula. [20] [21]

Dingo is a Finnish rock band formed around 1982. They fused Finnish melancholy with catchy rock melodies. The band was led by the frontman Pertti Neumann. For a few years of top success, Dingo was one of the most popular Finnish rock bands and caused a phenomenon called "Dingomania" all over Finland.

CMX, originally Cloaca Maxima, is a Finnish rock band. Terveet Kädet are a Finnish hardcore punk band, the first in Finland. The group was founded in Tornio in January 1980. They have had a major influence on bands from all over the world, especially in Brazil. Max Cavalera of Sepultura and Soulfly has mentioned Terveet Kädet as one of his all-time favourite bands.

Eppu Normaali is one of the most popular rock bands in Finland. The band formed in 1976 in Ylöjärvi, a small town near Tampere. The band is the best-selling music artist in Finland, with certified sales of nearly two million records, and it has also gained success especially in the use of the Finnish language in rock lyrics. In addition to their studio albums, Eppu Normaali also released live records, DVDs, and over 20 singles.

Feiled is a Finnish gothic rock band. Frontman Anton Laurila formed the band in 2001. Its name is a misspelling of the word "failed". The band was first noticed in 2002, after releasing their first demo, "Feiled".

The Bear Quartet was a cult indie rock band from Luleå in northern Sweden. They were formed in the summer of 1989 with the original roster of Mattias Alkberg on guitar and vocals, Jari Haapalainen and Johan Forsling on guitar, Peter Nuottaniemi on bass, and Magnus Olsson on drums. However, the band's lineup changed significantly before eventually settling on Mattias Alkberg on vocals and guitar, Jari Haapalainen on guitar, Peter Nuottaniemi on bass, Jejo Perkovic on drums, and Calle Olsson on keyboards. Their name is a reference to the novel Gentlemen by Klas Östergren. Although they were formed in 1989, they didn't garner the attention of a record label until 1992. They made records at a steady rate from 1992, with their debut album, Penny Century, to 2010 with their final album Monty Python. Their albums were often received favorably, but they never resulted in large sales, usually only selling between 1,000 and 10,000 units per disc. Advanced Art was one of the pioneers of Finnish electronic music founded in 1985 by Pasi Janhunen, Petri Huttunen, and Petja Valasvaara in Tampere, Finland. The band themselves opened their shows claiming "we play pop", but others described their music as synthpop, EBM and electro-industrial. Advanced Art were one of the very few Finnish bands at the time to appear on MTV Europe. The band never toured extensively but concentrated on one-off performances, sometimes in unusual locations.

Täältä tullaan Venäjä is the debut album of Hassisen Kone. It was released in 1980, shortly after the newly formed band had won the Finnish Rock championship. The outspoken lyrics of the opening track "Rappiolla" shocked, among others, Yleisradio reporters Anneli Tempakka and Maija Dahlgren, who started protesting against indecency in rock lyrics. In response to this, the band humorously dedicated their 1981 Christmas song "On jouluyö, nyt laulaa saa" to the reporters. "Rappiolla" became one of Hassisen Kone's biggest hits.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">The Micragirls</span> Finnish garage rock band

The Micragirls were an all-female Finnish garage rock band. They were active from 2001 to 2010, gaining a cult following both in Finland and abroad. The band released two albums and several EPs and singles. The Micragirls did over 250 concerts, of which some 100 were outside Finland. The band's principal line-up was a trio: drums, electric guitar and combo organ, with all band members singing.

12 Gauge is the sixth studio album by the Finnish melodic death metal band Kalmah, released on 3 March 2010. The album was recorded with more thrash metal elements than their previous releases, while the melodies that the band is known for and environmental themes regarding the swamps of Finland were retained. 12 Gauge was recorded in three sessions over a three-month period at Tico-Tico Studios in Finland.
