Per Kristiansen is a former Norwegian orienteering competitor who competed in the 1950s and 1960s, and later served as an official for the sport at a national level. He became National Champion both individually and in relay, and was twice the individual medal winner at the Scandinavian Championships. He participated at the two first European Orienteering Championships, with a silver medal in relay as his best result.

Career

Active career

Kristiansen won a bronze medal in the individual contest at the Norwegian Championships in 1956, and another bronze medal in 1957. He participated at the 1957 Nordic Championships, where he won a bronze medal in the individual contest. He was Norwegian Champion in relay in 1960 with the club IF Vestheim. In 1961 he became Norwegian Champion by winning the individual contest, beating Magne Lystad. In 1962 he participated in the winning relay team at the national championships for the second time. [1] He competed at the very first European championships in Løten in 1962, where he placed fifteenth in the individual contest, and received a bronze medal in the relay (which was not part of the official championship). [2] In 1963 he won a bronze medal at the Nordic Championships in Karlstad. [1] He received a silver medal in the relay event at the European Orienteering Championships in 1964 in Le Brassus, together with Ola Skarholt, Magne Lystad and Stig Berge. He also competed in the individual contest, where he placed fifteenth. [2]

Administrative career

Kristiansen chaired the training committee of Norges Orienteringsforbund for six years, from 1967 to 1973. [1] During this period the Norwegian orienteering team produced gold winners at the World Championships in both 1968, 1970 and 1972. The most successful year was 1970 in Friedrichroda, when the team won three of the four possible gold medals, plus two bronze medals. [3] Kristiansen co-wrote manuals and reports on the orienteering sport, such as a handbook on training and competition advice from 1968, and a report on psychological factors in orienteering from 1972. [1] He was strongly involved in the World Championships at Kongsberg in 1978, being on the organizing committee. [1] Experiences from this arrangement were basis for a booklet on the control function during the planning and execution of a competition, published in 1982. [4]

The Norwegian Orienteering Federation is the national Orienteering Association in Norway. It is recognized as the orienteering association for Norway by the International Orienteering Federation, of which it is a member. The association was founded 1 October 1945, and is a member of the Norwegian Confederation of Sports (NIF). Its first chairman was Kaare Thuesen. In 1946 NOF had 204 associated clubs, with just above 7,000 members. The number of clubs and associated members increased gradually through the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, and peaked in 1984 with 630 clubs and 34,000 members, and 35,000 members and 620 clubs in 1985. The next twenty years saw a decline in the number of clubs and members. As per December 2007 Norges Orienteringsforbund had 400 associated clubs and just above 24,000 members, distributed over eighteen districts.

Deutscher Turner Bund, Abteilung Sport Orientierungslauf is the national Orienteering Association in Germany. It is recognized as the orienteering association for Germany by the International Orienteering Federation, of which it is a member.

Astrid Carlson was a Norwegian orienteering competitor who competed in the 1970s. She participated at the 1978 World Orienteering Championships in Kongsberg, where she placed 8th in the individual course. She won a silver medal in the relay at the 1979 World Orienteering Championships in Tampere, together with Anne Berit Eid and Brit Volden.

Heidi Arnesen is a Norwegian orienteering competitor.

The Hungarian Orienteering Federation is the governing body for orienteering in Hungary. It is recognized as Hungary's national orienteering association by the International Orienteering Federation (IOF), of which it is a member.

Øystein Halvorsen is a Norwegian orienteering competitor who competed in the 1970s.

Idrettslaget Heming is a Norwegian sports club from Slemdal, Oslo. It has sections for association football, Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, orienteering and tennis, previously also for bandy.

Nydalens Skiklub is a Norwegian sports club from Nydalen, Oslo. It was founded in 1886, and has sections for orienteering, Nordic skiing and ski orienteering. The club organized national ski jumping competitions regularly from 1891 to 1953, and had its own ski jumping venue at Korsvoll. In orienteering, the club won national championships in relay in 1954 (men), 1968 (women), 1996, 1997 and 1999 (men), and 2000 and 2005 (women). The club organized the national orienteering championships in relay in 1953, the individual Norwegian championships in orienteering in 1961. and the national championships in 1999. Among the successful orienteers from the club are Bjørnar Valstad, Astrid Hansen, Elisabeth Ingvaldsen, Marianne Andersen and Carl Henrik Bjørseth. The club won the women's relay competition in Tiomila in 2006.

The 1st World Orienteering Championships were held in the village of Fiskars, Finland, 1–2 October 1966.

The 3rd World Orienteering Championships were held in Eisenach/Friedrichroda, East Germany, in September 1970.
