Perfect 10 is a 2019 British feature film, written and directed by Eva Riley. [1] It stars teenage gymnast and actress Frankie Box as Leigh, whose life and training is disrupted by changes in her family life. [2] The film had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on 3 October 2019, [3] and was released in the UK on the 7 August 2020. [4]

Plot

Leigh is a 15-year-old living with her father and preparing for her first gymnastics competition. Her life is disrupted when her older half-brother Joe, who she never knew she had, unexpectedly moves in. The disruption affects her gymnastics performance and Joe leads her into a world of moped crime. [5]

The film was shot in and around Brighton, East Sussex. [1] [2] Composed music is attributed to Terence James Dunn, [7] with Crazy, Stoned & Gone by Angelo De Augustine [6] also included on the soundtrack.

Release

Perfect 10 had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on 3 October 2019. [3] It was released on 8 July 2020 in France, [4] and 7 August 2020 in the UK. [1]

Accolades

Cath Clarke in a film review for The Guardian described the film as "a dazzling coming-of-age tale lit up by a pair of remarkable first-time performances". [1] The film won The Discovery Award at the British Independent Film Awards in February 2021. [8]

Dawn Shadforth is a British director of music videos, TV, and film and a visual artist. She was originally a fine artist making work with objects, light, video and sound. She won the Whitworth Young Contemporaries Award for the installation "Sweet Dreams" in 1991 which was exhibited in Manchester and Sheffield. Shadforth later became a music-video and television director, receiving many awards for her work in music video including: Best New Director at The 1998 CAD Awards, Best Director at the 2001 CAD Awards. Visionary Video at the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards. The Icon Award at the 2010 UK Music Video Awards. And for dramatic work she won a BIFA for Best British Short Film at the 2018 British Independent Film Awards for the short film The Big Day, and subsequently nominated for two BAFTAs in 2019 for Breakthrough talent for Trust episode "Silenzio" and in 2021 for Best Mini-Series for Adult Material.

Lucy Pardee is a British casting director, who is an exponent of street casting. Pardee used this to great effect in her work on Rocks, for which she was awarded a BAFTA for Casting Direction in 2021. She was the second person to receive the accolade since its introduction in 2019, when it was awarded to Shayna Markowitz. Pardee was nominated for second BAFTA award in 2022 for her work on the film Aftersun. She has spoken out about how the Academy Awards should also introduce an award for casting direction.
