Club history

Background

Perry Lakes Basketball Association was established in 1973 as Scarborough City District Basketball Club. It was formed from the amalgamation of three 'Metropolitan' clubs from the Claremont district: City Beach, Claremont and Scarborough. [1] [2] [3] Scarborough City played out of Perry Lakes Basketball Stadium and competed in the Western Australian Basketball Federation's (WABF) District Competition. The men's A Grade team reached the grand final in 1977, 1979 and 1981, finishing as runners-up in their first and third tries while claiming their first premiership in 1979. [4]

SBL / NBL1 West

1989 saw the formation of the State Basketball League (SBL) with both a men's and women's competition. Perry Lakes, trading as the Hawks, entered a team into both the Men's SBL and Women's SBL. [5] Both teams had strong inaugural seasons, with the men finishing in second place with a 19–3 record and the women earning the minor premiership with a first-place finish and a 15–6 record. [6] The women went on to reach the inaugural WSBL Grand Final, where they lost 79–66 to the Perth Redbacks. [7]

In 1994, both teams reached the grand final. The women were defeated by the Stirling Senators, while the men claimed their maiden MSBL championship with a 107–86 win over the Swan City Mustangs. [2] [8] The women claimed their first championship in 1998. Between 1998 and 2004, they played in every WSBL Grand Final, including winning three in a row between 2001 and 2003. In a similar dominant era for the men, the Hawks competed in five straight MSBL Grand Finals between 2001 and 2005, as they claimed a four-peat between 2001 and 2004 under coach and club legend John Gardiner. [2] [9] In 2007 and 2008, the women claimed back-to-back championships. [7] [10] [11]

In 2009, the Hawks returned to the MSBL Grand Final but fell short of their sixth championship with an 85–77 loss to the Lakeside Lightning. [12] Grand final appearances followed for the women in 2010 [7] and the men again in 2011. [13] In 2012, both teams missed the finals for the first time in two decades. [14] [15]

In 2017, the women returned to the WSBL Grand Final. [16] They defeated the Mandurah Magic 59–48 to win their seventh championship. Toni Farnworth took out the Grand Final MVP award for her 26 points. [17]

In 2018, the men returned to the MSBL Grand Final. They defeated the Joondalup Wolves 94–87 to win their sixth championship. Ben Purser was named Grand Final MVP for his 12 points, 10 rebounds and game-high eight assists. [18] [19] [20]

In 2020, both teams reached the grand final in the West Coast Classic. [21] [22]

In 2021, the SBL was rebranded as NBL1 West. [23] [24] The Hawks men were crowned minor premiers in the inaugural NBL1 West season and reached their 10th SBL / NBL1 West grand final, [25] where they defeated the Rockingham Flames 92–82 to win their seventh championship. Andrew Ferguson was named Grand Final MVP for his 18 points and 15 rebounds. [26]

Ben Purser is an Australian former basketball player. He played 16 years for the Perry Lakes Hawks of the NBL1 West, debuting in 2008 and playing every year until retiring in 2023. As team captain, he led the Hawks to two championships, the first in 2018 in the State Basketball League (SBL) with grand final MVP honours and the second in 2021 in the inaugural NBL1 West season. He was named to the All-SBL First Team in 2018 and the SBL All-Defensive Five every year between 2016 and 2019. He was also the league's Most Improved Player in 2009.

The NBL1 West Grand Final Most Valuable Player is an annual NBL1 West award given to the best performing player in both the Women's Grand Final and Men's Grand Final. Known as the State Basketball League (SBL) Grand Final Most Valuable Player from 1996 to 2019, the SBL was rebranded to NBL1 West in 2021.

The All-NBL1 West First Team is an annual NBL1 West honour bestowed on the best players in the league each year. Under the State Basketball League (SBL) brand, a five-player all-star team was named every year between 2005 and 2019. On a few occasions, the Most Valuable Player has not been named in the All-Star Five / First Team.

The 2018 State Basketball League season was the 30th season of the State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 16 March and ended on Saturday 28 July. The finals began on Friday 3 August and concluded with the women's grand final on Friday 31 August and the men's grand final on Saturday 1 September.

The 2017 State Basketball League season was the 29th season of the State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 17 March and ended on Saturday 29 July. The finals began on Friday 4 August and concluded with the women's grand final on Friday 1 September and the men's grand final on Saturday 2 September.

The 2008 State Basketball League season was the 20th season of the State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 28 March and ended on Saturday 2 August. The finals began on Friday 8 August and concluded with the women's grand final on Friday 5 September and the men's grand final on Saturday 6 September.
