Club history

Background

Perth Basketball Association (PBA) was established in 1964 as Perth Basketball Club. [3] The club nickname was originally the Demons. [4] Perth's men's team won two titles in the 1960s which was followed by titles in 1972, 1973, 1976 and 1977. The women's team won a premiership in 1975. [5]

SBL / NBL1 West

1989 saw the formation of the State Basketball League (SBL) with both a men's and women's competition. Perth, trading as the Redbacks, entered a team into both the Men's SBL and Women's SBL. The Redbacks women finished the inaugural season in second place with a 14–7 record and went on to reach the grand final, where they defeated the Perry Lakes Hawks 79–66 to win the championship. [6] The men's team finished the inaugural season in third place with a 17–5 record and also reached the grand final, where they defeated the Geraldton Buccaneers 114–89 to win the championship. [7] Both teams were coached by Don Sheppard, who subsequently won the SBL Coach of the Year Award for both the women's division and men's division. [8] In 1990, the men's team returned to the grand final, where they defended their title with a 114–91 win over the Stirling Senators. [7] Sheppard was named MSBL Coach of the Year for the second straight season. [8] Future NBA player Luc Longley was a member of the Redbacks' back-to-back championship squads. [9] In 1991, the women's team returned to the grand final and lost 79–66 to the Swan City Mustangs. [6]

In 1997, the Redbacks men finished on top of the ladder with a 19–5 record and went on to reach the grand final, where they defeated Buccaneers 94–92 to win their third championship. [7] [9] In 1999, the men's team returned to the grand final and lost 89–73 to the Bunbury City Slammers. [7] In 2000, the women's team finished the regular season in second place with a 15–5 record and went on to reach the grand final, [6] where they defeated the previously unbeaten Perry Lakes Hawks 74–66 to win their second championship. [10] In 2001, the women's team returned to the grand final and lost 74–58 to the Hawks. [6]

In 2017, the men's team finished the regular season in fourth place with a 16–10 record and went to reach the grand final, [7] [11] where they defeated the Joondalup Wolves 103–70 to win the fourth championship. The team featured forwards Shawn Redhage and Lee Roberts. [12] [13]

In 2021, the SBL was rebranded as NBL1 West. [14] [15]

Ben Purser is an Australian former basketball player. He played 16 years for the Perry Lakes Hawks of the NBL1 West, debuting in 2008 and playing every year until retiring in 2023. As team captain, he led the Hawks to two championships, the first in 2018 in the State Basketball League (SBL) with grand final MVP honours and the second in 2021 in the inaugural NBL1 West season. He was named to the All-SBL First Team in 2018 and the SBL All-Defensive Five every year between 2016 and 2019. He was also the league's Most Improved Player in 2009.

The NBL1 West Grand Final Most Valuable Player is an annual NBL1 West award given to the best performing player in both the Women's Grand Final and Men's Grand Final. Known as the State Basketball League (SBL) Grand Final Most Valuable Player from 1996 to 2019, the SBL was rebranded to NBL1 West in 2021.

The 2018 State Basketball League season was the 30th season of the State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 16 March and ended on Saturday 28 July. The finals began on Friday 3 August and concluded with the women's grand final on Friday 31 August and the men's grand final on Saturday 1 September.

The 2017 State Basketball League season was the 29th season of the State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 17 March and ended on Saturday 29 July. The finals began on Friday 4 August and concluded with the women's grand final on Friday 1 September and the men's grand final on Saturday 2 September.

The 2007 State Basketball League season was the 19th season of the State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 30 March and ended on Saturday 4 August. The finals began on Friday 10 August and concluded with the women's grand final on Friday 7 September and the men's grand final on Saturday 8 September.

The 2006 State Basketball League season was the 18th season of the State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 31 March and ended on Saturday 5 August. The finals began on Friday 11 August and concluded with the women's grand final on Friday 8 September and the men's grand final on Saturday 9 September.
