Willetton Tigers is an NBL1 West club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club fields a team in both the Men's and Women's NBL1 West. The club is a division of Willetton Basketball Association (WBA), the major administrative basketball organisation in the Melville/Canning region. The Tigers play their home games at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

Club history

Background

Willetton Basketball Association (WBA) was formed in 1973 as a division of the Willetton Sports Club (WSC), with teams representing the club competing in the Canning Districts Basketball Association in Riverton. Following strong growth in participation, four outdoor courts were established in 1978/79 at the current site of Willetton Basketball Stadium on Burrendah Boulevard and Willetton basketball teams relocated from Canning to form its own domestic competition. In 1979/80, Tangney District Basketball Association was formed by amalgamating Melville Districts Basketball Association and Willetton Basketball Division of WSC. [1] [2] [3] Following further growth in numbers, the existing facility was expanded to eight outdoor courts, and by the end of 1985, a new four-court indoor stadium was completed. [1] The stadium did not receive expansion until 2020, with an extra four courts added. [4]

In 1987, both the A-grade men's and women's teams won premierships, with the men reaching the grand final again in 1988. [1]

SBL / NBL1 West

1989 saw the formation of the State Basketball League (SBL) with both a men's and women's competition. Willetton, trading as the Tigers, entered a team into both the Men's SBL and Women's SBL. [5] [6]

Between 1996 and 1999, the women's team played in four straight grand finals, winning championships in 1997 and 1999. They won back-to-back championships in 2004 and 2005 and then played in four straight grand finals between 2008 and 2011, winning a three-peat of championships between 2009 and 2011. [1] [7] [8] They returned to the grand final in 2015 [9] and then won their eighth WSBL championship in 2016. [10]

The men's team made grand finals in 2002 and 2008 [11] before winning their first championship in 2010. [12]

In 2021, the SBL was rebranded as NBL1 West. [13] [14] The Tigers women were crowned minor premiers in the inaugural NBL1 West season and reached their 13th grand final, where they defeated the Joondalup Wolves 65–54 to win their ninth championship. [15] [16] They returned to the grand final in 2022, where they lost 87–61 to the Warwick Senators. [17] They reached their third straight grand final in 2023, [18] where they lost 68–61 to the Cockburn Cougars. [19] [20]

The 2017 WSBL season was the 29th season of the Women's State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 17 March, with Perry Lakes, East Perth and Rockingham hosting Stirling, Kalamunda and Perth respectively. The 2017 WSBL All-Star Game was played on 5 June at Bendat Basketball Centre – the home of basketball in Western Australia. The regular season ended on Saturday 29 July. The finals began on Friday 4 August and ended on Friday 1 September, when the Perry Lakes Hawks defeated the Mandurah Magic in the WSBL Grand Final.

The 2016 WSBL season was the 28th season of the Women's State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 18 March, with round 1 seeing a 2015 grand final rematch between the Rockingham Flames and Willetton Tigers. The 2016 WSBL All-Star Game was played on 6 June at Bendat Basketball Centre – the home of basketball in Western Australia. The regular season ended on Saturday 30 July. The finals began on Friday 5 August and ended on Friday 2 September, when the Tigers defeated the Joondalup Wolves in the WSBL Grand Final.

The NBL1 West Grand Final Most Valuable Player is an annual NBL1 West award given to the best performing player in both the Women's Grand Final and Men's Grand Final. Known as the State Basketball League (SBL) Grand Final Most Valuable Player from 1996 to 2019, the SBL was rebranded to NBL1 West in 2021.

Michael James Vigor is a Scottish-born Australian professional basketball player for the Willetton Tigers of the NBL1 West. He made his debut in the State Basketball League (SBL) for the Perth Redbacks in 2008 and in 2011 joined the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL) in 2011 as a development player. He won an NBL championship with the Wildcats in 2014 and sn SBL championship with the Redbacks in 2017. He played in Europe between 2015 and 2020, and in 2018 he represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.

The 2008 WSBL season was the 20th season of the Women's State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 28 March and ended on Saturday 2 August. The finals began on Friday 8 August and ended on Friday 5 September, when the Perry Lakes Hawks defeated the Willetton Tigers in the WSBL Grand Final.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ryan Petrik</span> Australian basketball coach (born 1981)

Ryan Petrik is an Australian basketball coach who currently serves as head coach of the Perth Lynx of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). He started his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Rockingham Flames Men's SBL team before being elevated to the head coaching role of the Flames Women's SBL team, where over 10 seasons he guided them to three grand finals and two championships while earning WSBL Coach of the Year honours. Between 2015 and 2020, he served as an assistant coach with the Lynx, and between 2019 and 2022, he served as head coach of the Flames men's team. In 2022, he was named the WNBL Coach of the Year and guided the Flames men to the NBL1 West championship and NBL1 National championship.

The 2021 NBL1 West season was the inaugural season of the NBL1 West. After 32 years known as the State Basketball League (SBL), the league was rebranded under the NBL1 banner for 2021. The regular season began on Friday 16 April and ended on Saturday 14 August. The finals began on Friday 20 August and concluded with the women's grand final on Friday 3 September and the men's grand final on Saturday 4 September.
