The Perth USAsia Centre is a think tank located at the University of Western Australia. The centre focuses on international relations between Australia, the Indo-Pacific region and the United States.

Contents

History

Launched by Former US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton in November 2012, [1] the Centre developed out of the successes at the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, developing a think tank presence in Western Australia. The centre hosts a number of events throughout the year including round-table dialogues and major conferences. [2] In 2019 the Centre hosted US ambassador to Australia Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr. The Centre has also been notable in its contributions towards the G'day USA program based in Washington DC, [3] as well as its involvement in various international dialogues around the globe. [4]

Fellows

The centre has a number of high-profile fellows including former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, [5] Governor of Western Australia and former Australian Ambassador to the U.S, Kim Beazley, [6] and former Minister for Defence, Stephen Smith. [7]

Funding

The Perth USAsia Centre is an Australian public company limited by guarantee and is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. [8] It receives funding from a combination of sources including the private sector, member contributions and the Western Australian State Government. The centre also receives funding for a number of its programs. [9]

After leaving parliament, he served as ambassador to the United States from 2010 to 2016 and 33rd governor of Western Australia from 2018 to 2022.

A member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), he was the federal member of Parliament (MP) for the division of Perth from 1993 to 2013, serving in the Rudd and Gillard governments as minister for Foreign Affairs from 2007 to 2010, minister for Trade in 2010 and minister for Defence from 2010 to 2013.

AUSMIN, the Australia-United States Ministerial Consultation, is the main annual forum for consultations between Australia and the United States. It has been held most years since 1985, with the meetings alternating between locations in the Australia and the United States. It involves the Australian Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Defence as well as the US Secretaries of State and Defense, with senior officials from both portfolios.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Quadrilateral Security Dialogue</span> Strategic dialogue between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States

The Quad is a grouping of Australia, India, Japan, and the United States that is maintained by talks between member countries. The grouping was initiated in 2007 by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with the support of Australian Prime Minister John Howard, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney. The dialogue was paralleled by joint military exercises of an unprecedented scale, titled Exercise Malabar. The diplomatic and military arrangement was widely viewed as a response to increased Chinese economic and military power.

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) is the regulatory authority for charities and not-for-profit organisations within Australia. The Commission was established in December 2012 as part of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 passed by the federal parliament, and is responsible for registering charities and non-profit organisations, ensuring their compliance with Australian law, and for keeping a public register of registered organisations.

Professor Lynda (Lyn) Dent Beazley is a neuroscientist and educator based in Perth, Western Australia. She is currently an Honorary Distinguished Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Western Australia, and the Sir Walter Murdoch Distinguished Professor of Science at Murdoch University. Among other awards, she has been named an Officer of the Order of Australia for her contributions to medical science a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering and Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
