As of the 2001 India census, [1] Perungulam had a population of 6,451. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Perungulam has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 74%. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Sri Mayakoothar Devasthanam

Sri Mayakoothar Temple - Thirukkulandhai, Perunkulam is one of the Nava Tirupathi, nine Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu located along the Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli route, on the banks of Thamiraparani river. These temples are classified as "Divya Desams", the 108 temples of Vishnu revered by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars. [2]

A special shrine for Kazhuneer Thuraiyan (Kazhuneer ---> water used for worship; Abhisheka Thurai --> Path), at the rear of the temple. This god is not directly worshiped. Whatever rituals are done for Perumal are repeated for this god, which proved to be powerful and unique. The god has no physical form except for a pair of slippers and a small stick.

Thiruvalutheesvarar Temple is also a significant feature.[ citation needed ]

A Divya Desam or Vaishnava Divya Desam is one of the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in the works of the Alvars (saints). ”Divya” means “divine” and “Desam” indicates “place of abode” (temple). Of the 108 temples, 105 are in India, one is in Nepal, and the last two are believed to be outside the Earthly realms. In India, they are spread over states of Tamil Nadu (84), Kerala (11), Andhra Pradesh (2), Gujarat (1), Uttar Pradesh (4), Uttarakhand (3). Muktinath, Saligramam is the only Divya Desam in Nepal. The Divya Desams are revered by the 12 Alvars in the Divya Prabandha, a collection of 4,000 Tamil verses. Divya Desams follow Thenkalai or Vadakalai modes of worship.
