Pest Control is an English hardcore punk band from Leeds, West Yorkshire. They have released one studio album, in addition to their 2020 demo. A 2023 article by Metal Hammer writer Dom Lawson called the band "the single most exciting band in the UK right now". [1]
Leah Massey-Hay, Joseph Kerry and Ben Jones had previously been a part of the hardcore band Implement, which disbanded amidst the COVID-19 lockdown in the United Kingdom. Soon, Kerry began sending ideas for songs to Massey-Hay and Jones. This culminated in the first Pest Control demo, which was recorded in September 2020, by Massey-Hay on vocals, Joseph Kerry on guitar and Jones on drums. [2] The release was followed shortly by the hiring of bassist Jack Padurariu. [3]
The band entered began recording for their debut album in 2022. During this time, the band recruited second guitarist Luke Schoonbeek for recording. Once the recording process was completed, they hired Big Cheese bassist Joe Sam Williams as a permanent second guitarist. [3] On 10 February 2023, the band officially released their debut album, titled Don't Test the Pest. [4] During February 2023, they opened for Kreator on their United Kingdom headline tour, alongside Municipal Waste. [5] On 11 August, they released the single "Enjoy the Show", accompanied by a music video. Between 22 August and 11 September, they toured the United Kingdom supporting Obituary. [6] On 6 January 2024, the band played a benefit show for the Leeds venue Boom, alongside Higher Power, the Flex and Static Dress. [7] On 18 May, the band performed at Desert Festival in London. [8]
The band were originally scheduled to play the June 2024 Download Festival. However, on 10 June, four days before the festival, the band announced they had cancelled their appearance due to the festival's sponsorship by Barclaycard who were connected to Israel's role in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. In the following hours, the band's statement led to Scowl, Zulu, Speed, Negative Frame, Overpower and Ithaca to cancel their appearances at the festival too. [9] [10] [11] Instead, over the following days Pest Control, Scowl, Speed and Zulu organised a fundraising for the Palestinian cause, which was held at Centrala in Birmingham on 14 June. The show included support from Cauldren, Ikhras and Transistrrr. [12] [13] The sponsorship was dropped from the festival on the same day, with negotiations initiated by Enter Shikari. [14]
On 12 August 2024, the band released the single "Time Bomb", announcing it would a part of their Autumn 2024 EP Year Of The Pest. [15]
Pest Control have been categorised by critics as crossover thrash [16] [1] [17] and hardcore punk, [18] [9] while also making use of elements of death metal. The band's music incorporates tight and grooving thrash metal guitar riffs and raspy, shouted vocals. [19] The band often avoid the political lyrics commonplace in hardcore and crossover thrash. Instead, lyrics discuss personal themes and mental health, many of which are told through metaphors of insects and infestations. [20]
They have cited influences including Suicidal Tendencies, Anthrax, [2] the Crumbsuckers, Municipal Waste, Metallica, Testament and Ludichrist. [3]

Mixing ska, punk, hardcore, dub, drum and bass, and reggae, Capdown built a reputation around their independent releases and numerous tours.
Skindred is a Welsh band that fuses heavy metal with other genres, most notably reggae. Formed in Newport in 1998, they are well known for their energetic and involving live performances and have won several awards including "Best Live Band" at the 2011 UK Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards and the "Devotion Award" at the 2011 Kerrang! Awards.
Enter Shikari are a British rock band formed in St Albans in 1999 by bassist Chris Batten, lead vocalist and keyboardist Rou Reynolds, and drummer Rob Rolfe. In 2003, guitarist Rory Clewlow joined the band to complete its current line-up, and it adopted its current name. In 2006, they performed to a growing fanbase at Download Festival as well as a sold-out concert at the London Astoria. Their debut studio album, Take to the Skies, was released in 2007 and reached number 4 in the Official UK Album Chart, and has since been certified gold in the UK. Their second, Common Dreads, was released in 2009 and debuted on the UK Albums Chart at number 16; while their third, A Flash Flood of Colour, was released in 2012 and debuted on the chart at number 4. Both have since been certified silver in the UK. The band spent a considerable amount of time supporting the latter release through the A Flash Flood of Colour World Tour, before beginning work on a fourth studio album, The Mindsweep, which was released in 2015. Their fifth studio album The Spark was released in 2017. Their sixth album Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible was released in April 2020. Their seventh and latest album, A Kiss for the Whole World, was released on 21 April 2023 which gave them their first-ever No. 1 album.
Municipal Waste is an American crossover thrash band from Richmond, Virginia, formed in 2000. To date, the band has released seven studio albums, three EPs and four splits. They have gone through a few line-up changes, leaving vocalist Tony Foresta and rhythm guitarist Ryan Waste as the only constant members. In addition to Foresta and Waste, their current lineup includes Philip "Land Phil" Hall on bass, Dave Witte on drums and Nick "Nikropolis" Poulos on lead guitar.
Creeper are an English rock band from Southampton. Formed in 2014, the group originally featured vocalist Will Gould, guitarists Ian Miles and Sina Nemati, bassist Sean Scott, and drummer Dan Bratton. The band independently released their self-titled debut EP in 2014, before signing with Roadrunner Records and issuing follow-up The Callous Heart the next year. At the end of 2015, Nemati was replaced by Oliver Burdett and touring keyboardist/second vocalist Hannah Greenwood became an official band member. A third EP, The Stranger, was released in 2016 and reached the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart top ten.
The Music in Leeds encompasses a variety of styles and genres, including rock, pop and electronic. While groups like Soft Cell, the Kaiser Chiefs, the Wedding Present, Utah Saints and the Bridewell Taxis have gained success in the mainstream, Gang of Four, the Sisters of Mercy, Chumbawamba and the Mission have helped to define genres like punk rock, gothic rock and post-punk.
Gallows are an English hardcore punk band from Watford, Hertfordshire. The band was formed in 2005 after Laurent Barnard's previous band disbanded. Gallows' debut album, Orchestra of Wolves, was distributed in the United States by Epitaph Records. The band were subsequently signed to Warner Bros. Records for a £1 million album contract, and released their second album Grey Britain in 2009. The band has been particularly successful in the UK, with two songs charting on the UK Single Charts, and have been featured in magazines such as Kerrang!, Alternative Press and Rolling Stone.
Crossover thrash is a fusion genre of thrash metal and hardcore punk. The genre emerged in the mid–1980s, when hardcore punk bands, such as Suicidal Tendencies, Cryptic Slaughter, Corrosion of Conformity and Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, began to incorporate the influence of thrash metal. At this time, the genre was particularly prominent in the New York hardcore scene, where groups including Agnostic Front, Leeway, Cro-Mags and Stormtroopers of Death were widely influential.
Trapped Under Ice is an American hardcore punk band from Baltimore, Maryland that was formed in 2007. Since then they have released an EP and three full-length albums. Taking influence from New York hardcore, the band has toured all over the world and was signed to Reaper Records. On August 11, 2013, Trapped Under Ice played its last show at Philadelphia's The Electric Factory at This Is Hardcore Festival 2013. The band announced their reunion in early 2015. In 2017 they released their third LP, Heatwave, on Pop Wig Records.
Higher Power are an English hardcore punk band formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire in 2014. They have released two full-length studio albums, one EP, one live album and one demo. Their second album, 27 Miles Underwater, was their major label debut through Roadrunner Records. In a 2020 poll by Revolver magazine, they were voted the most likely contemporary band to breakthrough into the mainstream. They are a part of the New Wave of British Hardcore.
Broken Teeth were an English hardcore punk band formed in Manchester in 2007. The band have released one studio album and four EPs.
Malevolence are an English metalcore band formed in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, in 2010. They have released three studio albums and one EP and established their own record label called MLVLTD Music.
Hardcore punk in the United Kingdom began in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the second wave of punk rock in the country. The scene produced many successful and influential hardcore punk bands throughout the 1980s such as Discharge, GBH and the Exploited and led to the pioneering of genres such as grindcore, street punk, crust punk and D-beat.
Wargasm (stylised in all caps and sometimes known as Wargasm (UK)) are a British electronic rock duo from London. The band formed in 2018 by Sam Matlock, who had previously performed as part of Dead!, and Milkie Way, who had previously photographed their concerts and played bass for Barns Courtney. The band released several standalone singles before making headlines in 2021 over incidents at that year's Heavy Music Awards and after a performance at Scala. Their 2022 mixtape Explicit: The Mixxxtape charted at No. 19 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart and appeared on Loudwire's "Best Rock + Metal Debut Albums of 2022", while their 2023 album Venom charted at No. 88 in the UK Albums Chart.
Zulu is an American hardcore punk band formed in Los Angeles in 2019. Beginning as a solo project by multi–instrumentalist and principal vocalist Anaiah Muhammad, the band grew to also include Dez Yusuf (guitar), Braxton Marcellous (guitar) and Satchel Brown (bass). Zulu has released two EPs in addition to their 2023 debut album A New Tomorrow. In a 2023 article, Metal Hammer described them as the year's "most vital hardcore band".
High Vis is an English rock band formed in London in 2016. Formed by the members of various hardcore punk bands, the band blends the genre with other styles like post-punk, indie rock and baggy. They have released two studio albums and four EPs.
Drain is an American hardcore punk band formed in Santa Cruz, California in 2014. Beginning without a set musical style, the 2015 hiring of vocalist Sammy Ciaramitaro and bassist-turned-guitarist Cody Chavez led the band to embrace a crossover thrash sound. They have released two demos, three EPs and two full length albums. The New York Times credited Drain as a driving force of American hardcore's "renaissance" in the early 2020s.
Outbreak Festival is an English hardcore punk festival and concert promotion company founded by Jordan Coupland and Lee Follows in 2011. Beginning at the Broomhall Centre in Sheffield, the festival has moved between a number of different venues and cities throughout its existence: being held in Leeds from 2012 to 2019, at the Well (2012), the Vox (2013–2014) and Canal Mills (2015–2019); and in Manchester from 2022, at Bowlers Exhibition Centre and Depot Mayfield (2023). Over its 13 date runtime, the festival has become one of the most prominent events in hardcore punk in the United Kingdom, hosting the genre's biggest native acts like Higher Power, Malevolence and the Flex, as well as fundamental international groups including the Cro-Mags, Gorilla Biscuits, Terror, Turnstile, Trapped Under Ice and Code Orange.
A few years ago, it seemed like old-school crossover thrash was a trend within hardcore. Bands like Power Trip were really into the late-'80s moment when punk and metal fused into fast, mean skate music. The original crossover thrash moment didn't last long, so why should the revival be any different? But Power Trip turned out to be one of the greatest bands in the world, and tons of other bands took off running with that style. We're still getting great crossover thrash shit all the time. Cast in point: Pest Control, who formed in Leeds during the pandemic and who absolutely understand how to build fast and brutal riffs into something vast and epic. I played the Pest Control album for the first time while driving through a freezing rainstorm on the way to a Super Bowl party, and it made me feel invincible.
