Air Vice Marshal Peter Dodworth CB, OBE, AFC (born 12 September 1940) is a former Royal Air Force officer who served as Head of the British Defence Staff in Washington, D.C. from 1991 to 1994.

Air Force Cross (United Kingdom) British military decoration

The Air Force Cross (AFC) is a military decoration awarded to officers, and since 1993 other ranks, of the United Kingdom Armed Forces, and formerly also to officers of the other Commonwealth countries. It is granted for "an act or acts of exemplary gallantry while flying, though not in active operations against the enemy". A bar is added to the ribbon for holders who are awarded a further AFC.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's aerial warfare force. Formed towards the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918, it is the oldest independent air force in the world. Following victory over the Central Powers in 1918 the RAF emerged as, at the time, the largest air force in the world. Since its formation, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history. In particular, it played a large part in the Second World War where it fought its most famous campaign, the Battle of Britain.

The British Defence Staff – US, which was previously known as British Joint Staff Mission and British Defence Staff (Washington), is the home of the Ministry of Defence in the United States of America and its purpose is to serve the interests of Her Majesty's Government in the USA.

RAF career

Educated at King George V Grammar School and the University of Leeds, Dodworth joined the Royal Air Force in 1963. [1] As a junior officer he was one of the first pilots to be trained on the Harrier. [2] He became officer commanding operations at RAF Wittering in 1976, Air Commander in Belize in 1980 and a member of the directing staff at the RAF Staff College, Bracknell in 1982. [1] He went on to be Station Commander at RAF Wittering in 1983, a staff officer at Headquarters Allied Air Forces Central Europe in 1985 and Director of Personnel at the Ministry of Defence in 1988. [1] His last appointments were as Head of the British Defence Staff and Defence Attaché in Washington, D.C. in 1991 and as Senior Member of the Directing Staff (Air) at the Royal College of Defence Studies in 1994 before retiring in 1996. [3]

The Hawker Siddeley Harrier, developed in the 1960s, is the first of the Harrier Jump Jet series of aircraft. It was the first operational close-support and reconnaissance fighter aircraft with vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) capabilities and the only truly successful V/STOL design of the many that arose in that era. The Harrier was developed directly from the Hawker Siddeley Kestrel prototype aircraft, following the cancellation of a more advanced supersonic aircraft, the Hawker Siddeley P.1154. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) ordered the Harrier GR.1 and GR.3 variants in the late 1960s. It was exported to the United States as the AV-8A, for use by the US Marine Corps (USMC), in the 1970s.

He was a fast jet pilot in the 1970s, a squadron commander during the Falklands War and a senior air commander in the 1990s. Squire was Chief of the Air Staff from 2000 to 2003 during which time both Operation Veritas and Operation Telic were initiated. In retirement he became Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Imperial War Museum and Vice-Chairman of the Board of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart William Peach, is a senior Royal Air Force officer. After training as a navigator, Peach commanded IX (Bomber) Squadron and then became Deputy Station Commander RAF Bruggen. He was deployed as NATO Air Commander (Forward) in Kosovo in 2000. He went on to be Chief of Defence Intelligence in 2006, Chief of Joint Operations in 2009 and the first Commander of Joint Forces Command in December 2011 before being appointed Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff in May 2013. Peach succeeded General Sir Nick Houghton as Chief of the Defence Staff on 14 July 2016. He succeeded General Petr Pavel as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee on 29 June 2018.
