Vice-Admiral Sir David Anthony James 'Tom' Blackburn KCVO CB CStJ [1] [2] (born 18 January 1945) [2] is a former British Royal Navy officer who served as Master of the Household between 2000 and 2005.
Blackburn was appointed to his first command, the minesweeper HMS Kirkliston, in 1972. [2] He became equerry to the Duke of Edinburgh in 1976, [3] executive officer of the cruiser HMS Antrim in 1978 and commander of the destroyer HMS Birmingham in 1983. [2] He was promoted to captain on 31 December 1984, [4] and went on to become commanding officer of the destroyer HMS York and captain D3 Squadron in 1987, commodore on Clyde and Naval Base Commander Clyde in 1990 and commanding officer of the frigate HMS Cornwall as well as captain of the 2nd Frigate Squadron in 1992. [2]
After that Blackburn became head of the British Defence Staff and defence attaché in Washington, D.C. in 1994 and chief of Staff to the commander-in-chief Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe, Naples in 1997. [2]
On leaving the Royal Navy Blackburn became Master of the Household, in which office he served from 2000 to 2005. [2]
He was a member of the Pensions Appeal Tribunal from 2005, chairman of the Marine Society, the Sea Cadets from 2006 and St John Ambulance London from 2006, as well as deputy chairman of the Royal Yachting Association from 2007. [2]
Blackburn was appointed as Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO) in 1978, and promoted to Knight Commander of the same Order (KCVO) in 2004. [2] [5] He was also appointed as Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1999. [2]
Vice Admiral Sir Timothy James Hamilton Laurence, is a retired Royal Navy officer and husband of Anne, Princess Royal, the only sister of King Charles III. Laurence was equerry to Queen Elizabeth II from 1986 to 1989.
Admiral of the Fleet Sir David Benjamin Bathurst, is a former Royal Navy officer. He is the only living person, apart from King Charles III, holding the rank of Admiral of the Fleet in the Royal Navy since the death of Lord Boyce. After training as a pilot and qualifying as a helicopter instructor, Bathurst commanded a Naval Air Squadron and then two frigates before achieving higher command in the navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff from 1993 to 1995: in that capacity he advised the British Government on the deployment of Naval Support including Sea Harriers during the Bosnian War.
Admiral Sir John Cunningham Kirkwood Slater,, known as Jock Slater, is a retired Royal Navy officer. He commanded a minesweeper, a frigate and then a destroyer before taking over the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and then achieving higher command in the Navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff from 1995 to 1998: in that capacity he played a key role in the 1998 Strategic Defence Review carried out by the Labour Government that had come to power a year earlier.
Admiral of the Fleet Sir Edward Beckwith Ashmore, was a senior Royal Navy officer. He saw active service in the Second World War and later commanded two frigates before achieving high command in the Navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff in the mid-1970s and in that role he advised the incoming Labour government on a major defence review and on the implications of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. He went on to be Chief of the Defence Staff, serving briefly in a caretaker capacity following the death of his predecessor.
