Peter Kyobe Waiswa (born 29 August 1971) is a Ugandan researcher, medical doctor and academic administrator. [1] He is an associate professor of Health Policy, Planning and Management at Makerere University. [2] [3] Waiswa is a health policy and health systems expert with a special interest in maternal, newborn and child health in low and middle-income countries. He is the chaiperson board of directors for Busoga Health Forum (BHF). [4] [5]

Early life and education

Waiswa was born a twin on 29 August 1971 to the late Kyobe Kasiko Isabirye and Gladys Kasiko Nabirye of Naigobya village, Bukooma sub-county in Luuka District. He attended Iganga Town Council Primary School then went to Budini Secondary School for O'level and Jinja College for A'level. [6] In 1992 he was enrolled at Mbarara University, Uganda graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and surgery. His Masters degree in public health from Hebrew University of Jerusalem Braun School of Public Health and Community Medicine.[ citation needed ] His joint PhD in Medicine & post doctoral fellowship from Makerere University and Karolinska Institute, in Sweden. [7] Waiswa is a Visiting Researcher at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. [8] [9]

Career

Waiswa did his medical internship at Rubaga Missionary hospital in Kampala (1997–98) after which he worked as National First Aid Officer of the Uganda Red Cross (1999-2000), then as a doctor and assistant district medical officer for Iganga District. [10] He was hired by Makerere University, serving in the Department of Health Policy, Planning and Management for the School of Public Health, College Of Health Sciences since 2008 until now. [11] He is a founder and member of an NGO Uganda Development and Health Associates (UDHA) and One Village At A Time (OVAAT). He also founded and leads the research groups of The INDEPTH Network Maternal, [12] Newborn & Child Health Working Group (MNCH-WG) and The Makerere University Centre of Excellence for Maternal Newborn & Child Health also a member of the Uganda National Immunisation Technical Advisory Group. [13] He regularly participates as a technical advisor for various local, national, regional and international organisations including WHO, UNICEF, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, International Pediatric Association, African Academy of Sciences and XRP Healthcare. The Makerere University School of Medicine (MUSM), also known as the Makerere University Medical School, is the school of medicine of Makerere University, Uganda's oldest and largest public university. The medical school has been part of Makerere University since 1924. The school provides medical education at diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels.

As of 2021, 11 universities in Uganda offer medical schools. Admission to medical school requires the candidate to have attained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as well as proficiency in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at A-level standards. Training leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) lasts five years. Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine and other Public and Private Universities in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three to four years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences is nowadays another alternative postgraduate training pathway in Uganda, such as Membership [MCS (ECSA)] and Fellowship [FCS (ECSA)] of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); as well as in Internal Medicine through the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSACOG) for Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Jeremiah Mutwalante Twa-Twa is a Ugandan physician, public health specialist, and politician. His last name is sometimes spelled "Twatwa". He is the elected Member of Parliament representing Iki-Iki County, Budaka District since May 2011. Previously he was the director of the Division of Child Health at the Uganda Ministry of Health from 2005 until 2010.

John Mikloth Magoola Luwuliza-Kirunda was a prominent Ugandan physician who served numerous roles in the Milton Obote governments, serving both as Minister of Internal Affairs of Uganda and Organizing Secretary of the Uganda People's Congress, serving in the latter role twice.

Ekwaro Obuku, is a Ugandan physician, researcher, academic and health policy expert, who is the immediate past president of the Uganda Medical Association, a professional industry association, that champions medical doctors' interests in the county. He is also currently, a Doctor of Philosophy candidate at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, in collaboration with McMaster University.

Annettee Olivia Nakimuli is a Ugandan obstetrician, gynecologist, medical researcher, academic and academic administrator. Since 17 February 2021, she serves as the Dean of Makerere University School of Medicine, the oldest medical school in East Africa. She concurrently serves as the Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the same medical school, a role she has served in since 2016. She is also the President of the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Sebastian Kakule Kyalwazi,, was a Ugandan consultant surgeon who served as professor and head of surgery at Makerere University School of Medicine and concurrently as senior consultant surgeon at Mulago National Referral Hospital from the early 1970s until his death in the early 1990s. He is reported to be the first indigenous African to qualify as a surgeon in East and Central Africa.

Francis A. Miiro,, was a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist in Uganda, who served as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Makerere University School of Medicine and concurrently as senior consultant obstetrician and gynecologists at Mulago National Referral Hospital, the teaching hospital of the medical school.

Wilton Sebastian Kezala Wakooli is a Ugandan professor, academic administrator, medical educationist, researcher, and nurse. He co-founded the International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS), Uganda in 1998. He served as chairman for the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examinations Board (UNMEB). He is a co-founder and former chairman of the Uganda Private Health Training Institutions Association (UPHTIA). He is a former secretary general for The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) Uganda and also Busoga Kingdom. He is the executive director of the International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS). He served also served as a Consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO) at Cuttington University College (CUC) in the Division of Nursing.

Busoga Health Forum (BHF) is a Uganda-based non-for-profit, non-governmental, and lobbying organisation that is based in Busoga region. It was established in 2020 to respond to health issues that are faced by women, children, and young people in Busoga region of Uganda. It is also known as the association of health workers in Busoga. It is an accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points provider by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.
