Peter Wallis (diplomat)

Sir Peter Gordon Wallis, KCVO, CMG (born 1935) is a retired British diplomat and civil servant. He was the British High Commissioner to Malta between 1991 and 1994. Educated at Pembroke College, Oxford, Wallis joined the Civil Service in 1958 and worked in the Ministry of Labour and National Service and HM Customs and Excise, before joining HM Diplomatic Service in 1968. He went on to serve as Minister at the British Embassy in South Africa (1987–88), and Minister (1989) and then acting High Commissioner (1990) to Namibia; he was briefly political adviser to the Joint Commander of the British Forces in the Gulf in 1991 and to the Commander of the British Forces in South East Turkey and North Iraq later in that year. [1] He was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in the 1990 Birthday Honours, [2] and a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1992. [3]

Mark Stanhope

Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, is a retired Royal Navy officer. After serving as a submarine commander, he commanded a frigate and then commanded an aircraft carrier on operational patrol off Sierra Leone. He went on to be Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation and then Commander-in-Chief Fleet. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval staff, the professional head of the Royal Navy, from July 2009 to April 2013. In this role he advised the British Government on the deployment of naval forces during operations around Libya. He was succeeded by Admiral Sir George Zambellas in April 2013.

On 2 August 2016, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced his intention to allocate King the Security Union portfolio. After the approval of his nomination by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, he took office on 19 September 2016. With the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union on 31 January 2020, he was the last British official to hold a position and portfolio within the European Commission.
