Petre Constantinescu-Iași (25 November 1892 –1 December 1977) was a Romanian historian,academic and communist politician.
Petre Constantinescu was born in the city of Iași,in a modest family of teachers. He completed his elementary studies in his hometown, where he also attended the National High School, from which he graduated in 1911. He then studied at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of Iași.
Initiated in socialist ideas from high school,Constantinescu-Iași joined the Social Democratic Party, the local organization in Iași,in 1910. Between the years 1914–1916,he actively participated in the actions of PSD and trade unions in Romania. In 1921,he became a founding member of the Romanian Communist Party (PCR). During the interwar period he was part of the leadership of some legal mass organizations, created and led by the PCR. [1]
After graduating from university,he worked as a secondary teacher at high schools in Iași,Huși,and Bârlad and as a professor at the University of Iași.
Constantinescu-Iași took part in the establishment of the National Anti-Fascist Committee in 1933 and other legal organizations to fight against the growing fascist movement. Because of his anti-fascist activity, starting in 1936 he was arrested and tried several times, being imprisoned for several years in the prisons of Doftana,Miercurea Ciuc, and Târgu Jiu. [2]
He was a founding member of the Friends of the USSR association. [3] He also carried out an intense publicity activity in the service of the PCR policy, campaigning for the takeover of power by the communists. During the Antonescu regime,Constantinescu-Iași was involved in the achievement of the unity of the anti-fascist forces, actively participating in the preparation of the coup d'état of 23 August 1944.
After the takeover of power by the Romanian Communist Party,he held positions of great importance for the establishment and consolidation of the communist regime in Romania. First,he was Minister of Propaganda (from 5 March 1946,Minister of Information) in the Government of first government of Petru Groza from 6 March 1945 to 30 November 1946. [1]
In 1948 he was elected as vice-president of the first Presidium of the Great National Assembly. As a deputy,he was president of the Romanian Group of the Interparliamentary Union;member of the World Interparliamentary Council;member of the National Antifascist Committee and vice-president of the same committee in Romania.
In 1948 he was also elected a member of the Romanian Academy. He was also elected a member of the Academy of Social and Political Sciences of the RSR,as well as a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. [1]
Between January 28,1953,and March 19,1957,Constantinescu-Iași held the position of Minister of Religions in the governments of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej and Chivu Stoica.
For his political and cultural activity,he was awarded the titles of "Hero of the Socialist Republic of Romania","Hero of Socialist Labor" and other distinctions. [2]
As a specialist in the modern and contemporary history of Romania,he made numerous contributions in the history of Romanian art and the Balkan peoples,in the study of the cultural and political relations of the Romanian people with neighboring peoples,as well as in the history of the labor movement and the history of the PCR,especially in the period 1933–1937. His studies ushered in research on the mass organizations led by the PCR,creating the basis for works on the history of the labor and socialist movements.
Petre Constantinescu-Iași is the author of over 100 scientific works published in the field of Romanian history, among which we mention the following:
Alex Mihai Stoenescu is a Romanian writer, journalist and politician.
Ștefan Voitec was a Romanian Marxist journalist and politician who held important positions in the state apparatus of Communist Romania. Debuting as a member of the Socialist Party of Romania in his late teens,he formed the Socialist Workers Party of Romania, then the United Socialist Party, while also engaging in human rights activism and advocating prison reform. The mid-1930s brought him into contact with the Romanian Communist Party, with whom he formed tactical alliances;however,he rejected its political line, and was for a while known as a Trotskyist. In 1939,he joined the consolidated Social Democratic Party, which reunited various socialist groups outlawed by the National Renaissance Front. During World War II,despite ostensibly withdrawing form political life to do research,Voitec served as the party's Secretary and joined the anti-fascist underground. Some reports suggest that he was also a committed anti-communist,critical of the Soviet Union to the point on endorsing war in the East. As a war correspondent,Voitec made contributions to Nazi propaganda,an issue which made him vulnerable to blackmail in later decades.
Iorgu Iordan was a Romanian linguist, philologist, diplomat, journalist, and left-wing agrarian, later communist, politician. The author of works on a large variety of topics, most of them dealing with issues of the Romanian language and Romance languages in general,he was elected a full member of the Romanian Academy in 1945. He was head of its Institute of Linguistics between 1949 and his retirement in 1962.
Miron Constantinescu was a Romanian communist politician,a leading member of the Romanian Communist Party,as well as a Marxist sociologist, historian, academic, and journalist. Initially close to Communist Romania's leader Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej,he became increasingly critical of the latter's Stalinist policies during the 1950s,and was sidelined together with Iosif Chișinevschi. Reinstated under Nicolae Ceauşescu,he became a member of the Romanian Academy.
Amicii URSS,which carries the same meaning) was a cultural association in interwar Romania, uniting left-wing and anti-fascist intellectuals who advocated a détente between their country and Joseph Stalin's Soviet Union. Created in the spring of 1934 by Petre Constantinescu-Iași,an activist of the previously outlawed Romanian Communist Party, the society took its inspiration from the French Amis de l'URSS and from the worldwide network. Actively encouraged and financed by the Comintern,Amicii URSS was viewed with suspicion by authorities —never officially registered,it was eventually banned on the orders of Premier Gheorghe Tătărescu on November 25,1934. It ceased its activity after that point, but constituted a precedent for the Romanian Society for Friendship with the Soviet Union (ARLUS).
Ion Vincze was a Romanian communist politician and diplomat. An activist of the Romanian Communist Party (PCR),he was married to Constanța Crăciun, herself a prominent member of the party.
Camil Bujor Mureșanu was a Romanian historian, professor and author.
Petru Comarnescu was a Romanian literary and art critic and translator.
Ștefan Ciobanu was a Romanian historian and academician, author of some important works about ancient Romanian literature,Romanian culture in Basarabia under Russian occupation,Bessarabian demography, fervent advocate of the introduction of the Romanian language in the schools of Bessarabia,vice-president of the Romanian Academy between 1944 and 1948. He served as Minister of Education (1917–1918) of the short-lived Moldavian Democratic Republic.
Ion Țurcanu is an author, educator, historian, memoirist, professor, former member of the Parliament (1990–1994),politician and Romanian writer from Moldova. He is one of the 277 MPs of the first parliament of the former Soviet Socialist Republic, who voted for the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova on 27 August 1991.

The Socialist Peasants' Party was a short-lived political party in Romania, presided over by the academic Mihai Ralea. Created nominally in 1938 but dissolved soon after,it reemerged during World War II. A clandestine group,it opposed the fascist regime of Ion Antonescu, although its own roots were planted in authoritarian politics. Looking to the Soviet Union for inspiration, the PSȚwas cultivated by the Romanian Communist Party (PCdR),and comprised a faction of radicalized social democrats, under Lothar Rădăceanu.
The National Popular Party was an antifascist political party in Romania, founded during World War II as the underground Union of Patriots. The latter had defined itself as a spontaneous movement of resistance to the dictatorial regime of Ion Antonescu, but was largely known as a front for the illegal Romanian Communist Party. Its founders—Dumitru Bagdasar,Gheorghe Vlădescu-Răcoasa,Simion Stoilow—were closely cooperating with PCdR men,but also with liberal opposition forces. Repressed by the authorities, the UP made a comeback after the pro-Allied August 23 Coup of 1944,when it endured as a small ally of the communists—mostly controlled directly by them, but sometimes rebellious.
Barbu Lăzăreanu was a Romanian literary historian, bibliographer, and left-wing activist. Of Romanian Jewish background,he became noted for both his social criticism and his lyrical pieces while still in high school, subsequently developing as a satirist and printing his own humorous magazine,Țivil-Cazon. Lăzăreanu's youthful sympathies veered toward the anarchist underground, prompting him to associate with Panait Mușoiu. At that stage of his life,he participated in a bakers' strike, and encouraged peasants to resist encroachment by the landowners.
Paul Bujor was a Romanian zoologist, physiologist and marine biologist, also noted as a socialist writer and politician. Hailing from rural Covurlui County,he studied biology in France and Switzerland, where he was attracted by left-wing ideas;his evolutionary biology, informed by the work of Carl Vogt, veered into Marxism and irreligion. Returning to the Kingdom of Romania,he was a junior member of the Romanian Social Democratic Workers' Party, active on its moderate wing. He earned the critics' attention in the 1890s as a short story writer with a socialist and pacifist message, but only returned to fiction writing briefly,in the 1930s. An award-winning ichthyologist,Bujor was hired by the University of Iași,where he taught for 41 years, and throughout the period worked on documenting the Black Sea fauna, and made discoveries concerning the environment of Techirghiol Lake. He inaugurated the Romanian study of animal morphology, while also contributing to histology, embryology, and parasitology, and gave popular lectures on evolution and physical culture.
The United Socialist Party was a political party in Romania, formed in 1933 through the merger of the Independent Socialist Party (PSI) and the Socialist Party. PSU was a small party but played an important role within the left-wing movement, especially through its repeated attempts to promote unity between the Communist Party (PCR) and Social Democratic Party (PSD). PSU was affiliated with the London-based International Bureau of Revolutionary Socialist Unity.
