Phani Bhushan Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi police officer,chief of the Criminal Investigation Department,and member of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission. [1] He was a secretary of the government of Bangladesh. [2]
Chowdhury was born on 11 November 1954 in Chhatak Upazila,Sunamganj District. [3] [4] He graduated from the University of Chittagong in 1975 with a bachelor's in physics. [3] He completed a law degree in 1984 from the University of Dhaka. [3]
Chowdhury joined the Bangladesh Civil Service in 1981 and joined the Bangladesh Police as a cadet in 1982. [5] In 1988,he was appointed an assistant superintendent of Bangladesh police. [5]
Chowdhury was the special superintendent of the Criminal Investigation Department in 2001. [6] During the Bangladesh Nationalist Party rule from 2001 to 2006,he was denied promotion multiple times. [6] The Bangladesh Nationalist Party government didn't promote and provide good postings to Hindu officers like Chowdhury,and officers from Faridpur District and Gopalganj District as they were perceived as being loyal to the opposition Awami League. [6] Phani was promoted to deputy inspector general and posted to the Police Training Centre,Khulna. [6]
In 2007,Chowdhury was the chief of the Criminal Investigation Department. [7] He led the Criminal Investigation Department's investigation of the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack and found involvement of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami Bangladesh. [8]
In 2010,Chowdhury joined the Ministry of Home Affairs as the police coordinator. [5] The government considered appointing coordinator of the investigative team of the International Crimes Tribunal. [9]
Chowdhury was made the secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute in 2013. [5] He retired on 10 November 2014. [5] He joined the Bangladesh Public Service Commission on 24 November 2014. [5] [10]
Chowdhury died on 26 March 2016 at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital,Bangladesh from cancer. [11] [12]
Mahbub Ul Alam Choudhury was a Bangladeshi poet,journalist,and activist in the Bengali Language Movement. He wrote the first poem on the Bengali Language Movement. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2009 by the Government of Bangladesh.

The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina,the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack. The involvement of BNP-Jamaat led government is still debated.
The Criminal Investigation Department is a specialized intelligence and investigation wing of the Bangladesh Police. It is headquartered in Malibagh,Dhaka and maintains a training school named the Detective Training School. Personnel attached to this wing essentially work in plain clothes. Mohammad Ali Mia,BPM,PPM is the head of the Criminal Investigation Department.
Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi politician,minister and six-term member of Jatiya Sangsad and member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee,who served as the adviser of parliamentary affairs to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in from 2001 to 2006. On 1 October 2013 he was convicted of 9 of 23 charges and sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh for crimes during the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence. However,limitations placed on his defense testimony were called "disturbing" and the trial was politically motivated.

Extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances in Bangladesh refer to extrajudicial executions carried out by law enforcement agencies without due legal process and to abduction cases in which the government directly or indirectly kidnaps people and holds them incommunicado. From 2009 to 2023,at least 2,699 people were victims of extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh. During the period,677 people were forcibly disappeared,and 1,048 people died in custody. From 2004 to 2006,at least 991 people were killed extrajudicially by "death squad" the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The practice of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances primarily involves law enforcement agencies such as the RAB and the Detective Branch (DB) of the police.
Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi politician. She served as a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Faridpur-2 constituency from 2008 till her death in 2022. She also served as the Environment and Forest Minister of Bangladesh during 1996–2001.
Abul Harris Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi and politician who served as the Political Secretary of Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. He was the Joint Secretary General of Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
