Phares Oluoch Kanindo

Phares Oluoch Kanindo (born 29 November 1942-died 24 May 2014) was a veteran politician in Kenya. He served as a member of parliament from 1979 to 1988, when the then president Moi prorogued parliament after the attempted 1982 coup. This he served in the larger Homa Bay Constituency, now divided into two constituencies (Rongo and Rangwe)

During that time, Kanindo was appointed to serve in the then government as an Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Education.

Kanindo is the son of the late Andrea Anindo.

Early life

Kanindo was born at the present Awendo District in Nyanza Province of Kenya to the late Andrea Anindo and Masella Ojowi Anindo. He attended primary schools among them Manyatta, Lwala, Komolo-rume primary school. He then joined Koderobara and Pe-Hill Intermediate School, where he schooled together with the eldest son of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Oburu Odinga who is the immediate former Member of Parliament for Bondo Constituency and Assistant Minister of Finance, Republic of Kenya. Oburu is eldest brother to the former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya. He later joined Luule Secondary School in Kampala, Uganda.

Kanindo later got a scholarship to Czechoslovakia republic where he registered for technical practices, majoring in Diploma in Radio and Wireless Electronics between 1961 and 1963. During Kenyan Independence, 1963, Kanindo jetted back into the country.

He joined the Kenya News Agency as a technician on radio and wireless devices. Kanindo was one of the first staff members to start the newly registered Agency together with Ocholla Ogur former Legislator for Nyatike Constituency and Amollo Oduma, Otieno Ogango, Joseph Ogutu among others.

He later ventured in music, nationally by joining The EMI Group (Electric & Musical Industries Ltd.) where he served as the CEO in Kenya, under a proprietor, Graham Shepherd of EMI London, the son of the then speaker of house of lords in London.

He tried his political wave in 1974 General elections, where he opted for the Homa Bay Constituency seat. He came second, losing the elections narrowly to the late Achieng Alloyce, among the 12 candidates.

That same year, Kanindo formed his own company, POK Music Stores which he merged with EMI-International. With POK Music Stores, Kanindo produced large varieties of music which sold in the entire West and South Africa, the countries included, Ivory Coast, Zambia, Malawi, Ghana, Nigeria and even the Brooklyn of New York City and Soho Square in London. Among the prominent Kenyan artists who produced their music at POK Music Stores include the late Kenyan Benga Maestro Collela Mazee, Kawere Boys, Kalusi Band, Awino lawi among others. [1] During his days, Kanindo was an ace music producer and at one time Congolese greats like Franco, Verkys Kiamuamgana, Mbilia Bel and Tabu Ley visited the home of Phares Oluoch Kanindo in Awendo, South Nyanza. Multi Party Politics

In 1988, Kanindo stepped down in the political race to capture the Rongo parliamentary seat. The seat was later to be captured by former Minister for public service, Hon [[Dalmas Otieno

Kanindo later joined South Nyanza Sugar Co. Ltd as executive chairman, a position he used to revive the falling sugar industry. Kanindo also enjoys good rapport with senior government officials, among them the former Prime Minister and current opposition leader Raila Odinga

Political life

He joined parliament in 1979 as a member of parliament for Homa Bay Constituency a position he served for two terms up to 1988. He was appointed to serve in the lucrative Ministry of Education as the Assistant Minister.

In 1988, he was appointed to serve as the Executive chairman for South Nyanza Sugar Co. Ltd, a position he used to transform the then upcoming Sugar Industry.

Early Attempts to Secure Luo Unity

After the death of Tom Mboya, the Luo community was left with no option since Jaramogi was in the opposition. Kanindo however manoeuvred his way into the community, by joining hands with Ngengi Muigai to bring the community back to its feet. Kanindo and Ngengi Muigai led delegation to Nakuru State House to visit the then president of Kenya, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. The delegation was led by the then Luo Elder Ker. Mbuya Akoko and other elders. This did not succeed as planned as Kenyatta died two weeks after their first attempt.

Masinde Muliro Kenyan politician

They are part of a larger group of ethno-linguistically related Luo peoples who inhabit an area ranging from South Sudan, South-Western Ethiopia, Northern and Eastern Uganda, Northeastern DRC, South-Western Kenya and Northern Tanzania.

Raila Odinga Opposition leader Kenya

Raila Amolo Odinga is a Kenyan politician who served as the Leader of the Opposition from 2013 to 14 Jan 2018. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Langata from 1992 to 2013. He served in the Cabinet of Kenya as Minister of Energy from 2001 to 2002, and as the Minister of Roads, Public Works and Housing from 2003 to 2005. Migori County County in Kenya

Migori County is a county in the former Nyanza Province of southwestern Kenya. It is located in Southwestern Kenya and borders Homa Bay County (North), Kisii County, Narok, Tanzania and Lake Victoria to the West. The county also borders Uganda via Migingo Island in Lake Victoria. The county is headquartered by Migori town, which is also its largest town. The Kenya National Census of 2019 indicated that Migori County had a population of 1,116,436 compared to 917, 170 in 2009 Census. Migori County is located in the sugar belt wetlands of Western Kenya and is mostly at the heart of the African tropics. However, the county enjoys a pleasant climate because of high altitude which modifies the climate alongside the cool breeze from Lake Victoria.

Oburu Odinga is a Kenyan member for the East African Legislative Assembly, based in Arusha Tanzania. He is the former assistant minister for finance in the 2008 Grand Coalition government and former Member of the Parliament, Kenya.

Fredrick Oduya Oprong was a former Kenyan legislator and assistant minister who was awarded the Head of State’s Commendation for his contribution towards national development.

Dalmas Otieno Anyango o Kenya. He was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Rongo in 1988, serving as Minister for Industrialisation from 1988 to 1991, then later that year as Minister of Labour & Human Resource Development and as Minister of Transport from 1991 to 1996. He joined the main opposition candidate in the 2007 presidential election Raila Odinga, successfully running for the Member of Parliament for Rongo. Following a violence-marred election and post-poll crisis, Odinga was appointed Prime Minister in April 2008 in a power-sharing deal with Mwai Kibaki, serving as Supervisor and Coordinator of a national unity coalition government. Dalmas was appointed as the Minister of State for Public Service. In the subsequent presidential election 5 years later he retained his seat again. Dalmas is commonly known as " Wuod Bade Boyo".Other nicknames that have been associated with him include "Adally" which is slang for his name Dalmas. Dalmas unsuccessfully vied for Rongo MP in 2017 as independent candidate.

Collela Mazee was a Kenyan musician, who was a leading member of the Victoria Jazz band alongside Ochieng Nelly. They were among the originators of the benga music, a music genre with origins in Kenya's Luoland.

Ronald Ngala Kenyan politician

Ronald Gideon Ngala (1923–1972) was a Kenyan politician who was the leader of the Kenya African Democratic Union political party from its creation in 1960 until its dissolution in 1964.

Eric Edward Khasakhala Kenyan politician

Eric Edward Khasakhala, known as "Omwana wa Kwendo" was a Kenyan politician, educationist, Pan Africanist, independence activist, Cabinet Minister and one of the founding fathers of the Republic of Kenya. He was a participant of the delegation at the negotiations for Independence at the Lancaster House Conferences; he was instrumental in the formation of Kenya's Kenya African Democratic Union (KADU) party, which he served as one of the party officers. The KADU advocated for the federalist post independent Kenya.

Tom R was the main opposition candidate in the 2007 presidential election, running against incumbent Mwai Kibaki. In the presidential election 5 years later he placed second against Uhuru Kenyatta, garnering 5,340,546 votes, which represented 43.28% of the total votes cast. He made another run for the presidency in August 2017 against Uhuru Kenyatta and lost after the chairman of the electoral body declared Uhuru Kenyatta as the winner with 54% of the votes cast to Raila's 43%. This outcome was eventually annulled by the Supreme Court following findings that the election was marred by "illegalities and irregularities". A subsequent fresh election ordered by the court was won by Kenyatta after Raila declined to participate, citing inadequate reforms to enable a fair process in the repeat poll.

Ben Okello Oluoch, also known as Ben Oluoch Okello and B.O.O.,, was a Kenyan radio presenter and politician who represented Migori County in the Senate of Kenya from 2017 to 2018.
