Phendula (Xhosa: "Answer") is the second studio album by South African singer Zahara. It was released by TS Records on September 13, 2013. The album's production was primarily handled by Robbie Malinga and Mojalefa Thebe. Phendula features guest appearances from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Anele & Neliswa, Mzwakhe Mbuli, Mukengerwa Tresor Riziki and 2 Face Idibia. [1] It was supported by the singles "Phendula", "Impilo" and "Stay". [2] Upon its release, the album was made available for purchase on iTunes and Musica. [1] [3]
In an interview with The Herald's Yoliswa Sobuwa, Zahara said she was excited about the album and expects her fans to love it because of her vocal growth and songwriting skills. She also said the lead single and title track, "Phendula", is about seeking answers from God for the eradication of human suffering. [4]
The album was recorded at KZN Studios in Greyville and mastered at TS Records studios in Joburg. [5] Zahara told You magazine that she planned on shooting a live DVD for Phendula and will invite guest acts who appeared on the project to perform with her. [6] TruFm reported that Phendula went platinum after being on the market for seven days. [7] Moreover, it went double platinum and sold over 100,000 copies after two weeks. [8]
The title track, "Phendula", was released on September 6, 2013, as the album's lead single. Its music video was uploaded to YouTube on September 27, 2013.
"Impilo" was released on November 1, 2013, as the album's second single. The accompanying music video for the song features cameo appearances from TS Records dignitaries, and was uploaded to YouTube at a total length of 3 minutes and 48 seconds. [9]
The album's third single, "Stay", features vocals from Nigerian singer 2 Face Idibia. In an interview with Sunday Sun newspaper, Zahara described the song as a melodic song about love. [10] [11] Zahara and 2face recorded the song after being in the studio for 5 hours. [12]

To celebrate the album's release, Zahara and her management team put together the Phendula Tour, which was sponsored by Nedbank and supported by Drum Magazine, Cape Argus, Vukani and Metro FM. [5] [13]

Phendula received positive reviews from music critics. A writer for Swagger Magazine gave the album a 91.8 rating out of 100, praising Zahara's musicianship and voice and commending the songs for being "deeper and more thoughtful than typical pop". [14]
Phendula was nominated for Best African Pop Album at the 2014 Metro FM Music Awards. [15] It won Best Selling Album and Best RnB, Soul and Reggae at the 20th Annual SAMAs. [16]

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a South African male choral group singing in the local vocal styles of isicathamiya and mbube. They became known internationally after singing with Paul Simon on his 1986 album Graceland. They have since won multiple awards, including five Grammy Awards the fifth of which they dedicated to the late former South African President Nelson Mandela.
Innocent Ujah Idibia MON, known by his stage name 2Baba is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, record producer and philanthropist known for his solo debut album, Face2Face. He is regarded as the "most influential", following his contributions to Nigerian pop music in the 2000s.
Mzwakhe Mbuli is a South African poet, Mbaqanga singer and former Deacon at Apostolic Faith Mission Church in Naledi Soweto, South Africa. Known as "The People's Poet, Tall Man, Mbulism, The Voice Of Reason", he is the father of Mzwakhe Mbuli Junior, also known as Robot_Boii.
Chibuzor Oji, better known by his stage name Faze, is a Nigerian musician and actor. He was a member of the defunct Nigerian hip hop group Plantashun Boiz, along with BlackFace Naija and 2face Idibia. The group split up in 2004 and each member of the group has gone on to launch solo careers.
Bulelwa Mkutukana, known by her stage name Zahara, was a South African singer, songwriter and guitarist. Her music was classified loosely as "Afro-soul", and she sang in Xhosa, her native language, as well as in English.
Loliwe is the debut studio album by South African singer Zahara, released on 6 September 2011. The album's production was handled by Robbie Malinga and Mojalefa Thebe. The album, released on 15 January 2014, is a tribute to the life of the group's matriarch Nellie Shabalala (1953-2002), the late wife of Mambazo leader Joseph Shabalala. It is also only the second album in the group's 50-year career to feature female Zulu vocalists singing alongside the male members.
The Beginning Live is a live DVD by South African singer Zahara. It was released by TS Records on September 3, 2012, and features additional performances by LeRoy Bell, DJ Sbu, the Soweto Gospel Choir and Riot. The DVD was shot at Carnival City in Ekurhuleni on June 8 and 9. During her two-day performance, Zahara was backed by an eight person band led by percussionist Tlale Makhene.
The MTV Africa Music Awards 2014 took place on 7 June 2014, at the Durban International Convention Centre. The awards aired live across Africa on MTV Base and MTV. The ceremony was sponsored by KwaZulu-Natal Province, Absolut and the City of Durban. The show was hosted by American comedian and actor Marlon Wayans. On 27 May 2014, the nominees for the MTV Base Leadership Award were announced. On 28 May, MTV Base revealed Drake, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, and Miley Cyrus as the nominees for the Best International Act category. Davido and Mafikizolo received the most nominations with four each. Mi Casa and P-Square received three nominations. Diamond Platnumz and Wizkid were nominated twice for both Best Male and Best Collaboration.
Rebecca Akosua Acheampomaa Acheampong, known mononymously as Becca, is a Ghanaian singer, songwriter and actress. She first gained recognition as a contestant on the second season of TV3's annual singing competition Mentor. The Ascension is the sixth studio album by Nigerian singer 2face Idibia. It was released on July 21, 2014, by Hypertek Digital and 960 Music Group, and serves as the follow-up to his fifth studio album Away and Beyond (2012). The album features guest appearances from Machel Montano, Vector, Bridget Kelly, Rocksteady, Dammy Krane, Sir Victor Uwaifo, Iceberg Slim, Kim Almarcha, Shurwayne Winchester and Fally Ipupa. It was produced by Leriq, Alton Berti, Bolji Beats, Dezay, Dnyce, Fabio Litto, Femdouble, GSol the Producer, Jay Sleek, Kodjo, Masterkraft and Rolly. The Ascension debuted at number 12 on the Billboard World Albums chart and received generally mixed reviews from music critics. By having an album debut on the aforementioned chart, 2face became the first Nigerian artist to achieve this feat.
Nelson Mandela is the debut extended play by South African singer Zahara. It pays tribute to Nelson Mandela and was released on July 15, 2013, at a time when Mandela was critically ill at the Mediclinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria. The EP's lead single, eponymously titled "Nelson Mandela", peaked at number 1 on South Africa's official music chart. Nelson Mandela was made available for purchase on iTunes upon its release.

Mukengerwa Tresor Riziki, best known by his stage name TRESOR, is a Congolese-born singer, songwriter, music producer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He gained prominence in 2015 after releasing his single "Mount Everest" from his debut album, VII. His name "Tresor", when translated from French, means "treasure".
RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE is an amapiano collaborative album by TRESOR, DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small. It was released on 9 April 2021 and features guest appearances from local South African musicians such as Tyler ICU, Mas Musiq and the Cape Town band Beatenberg. The 14-track album is composed of TRESOR's vocals, which are combined from genres such as amapiano, Kwassa kwassa, rumba, salsa, bubblegum and Afrobeats. The album also alternates between Swahili, French, English, Zulu and Lingala.
Resistance Is Defence is an album by the South African musician Mzwakhe Mbuli. It was released in 1992. Some of its songs were banned from South African radio.
