The Liam MacCarthy Cup is a trophy awarded annually by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) to the team that wins the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the main competition in the prehistoric sport of hurling. Based on the design of a medieval drinking vessel, the trophy was first awarded in 1923 to the winners of the (delayed) 1921 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final. The original 1920s trophy was retired in the 1990s, with a new identical trophy awarded annually since 1992. The original trophy is on permanent display in the GAA Museum at Croke Park in Dublin.
The Westmeath County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) or Westmeath GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Westmeath. The county board is also responsible for the Westmeath county teams.

Ger O'Meara is an inter-county hurler and Gaelic footballer for Dublin born in 1985. He plays his club hurling for O'Tooles and plays at corner back. He received a Dublin Hurling Blue Star award for his performances for O'Tooles in 2004. O'Meara had previously opted out of the Dublin Senior Hurling squad due to a call up to the senior football panel by manager Paul Caffrey, although he made his return to play for Dublin's hurling team for the All-Ireland Group B clash against Offaly in 2006. O'Meara played a valuable part in Dublin's hurling relegation clash with Westmeath which retained Dublin's Liam MacCarthy Cup status for 2007. O'Meara played in the 2006 Leinster Under-21 Hurling Championship final for Dublin, finishing on the losing team against Kilkenny in Nowlan Park.

David Curtin is an inter-county hurling player who plays for Dublin. He plays his club hurling for Dublin side Ballyboden St Enda's. In 2005, he will be remembered for his astounding performance against Laois which confirmed Dublins All-Ireland status for the 2006 championship. Curtin finished the game with an impressive scoreline of 1-7. In the 2006 All-Ireland championship, this feat was repeated when Dublin swept aside Westmeath to once retain their Liam MacCarthy Cup status. He finished the 2006 championship with a scoreline of 0-33, a scoreline which left him 5th of the top scorer list despite Dublins lack of progress in the All-Ireland championship. Curtin was the Dublin hurling captain for 2005. David was named on the 2006 Dublin Bus/Evening Herald Blue Star hurling XV at Centre Forward. Curtin won his first Dublin Senior Hurling Championship medal with his club Ballyboden St Endas in October 2007. Since then Boden have won 4 titles in a row. The 2007 Dublin championship win qualified Ballyboden to play in their first ever Leinster Senior Club Hurling Championship game against Oulart the Ballagh GAA of Wexford. Boden won the game by 1-17 to 0-15 with Curtin scoring a total of 0-04.
