Philip Ridley Hall OBE (born 11 October 1967) is a British diplomat and solicitor,who is currently the British Ambassador to Jordan.
Philip Ridley Hall was born in Chichester,West Sussex on 11 October 1967. Hall was born to J. Ridley Hall and Janette Lavinia Hall. [1]
Hall was educated at Cranleigh School, [1] and attended Gonville and Caius College,Cambridge,graduating with a BA in Law in 1989. [1] He completed a Postgraduate Certificate in European Integration (Law) at Saarland University,graduating in 1993. He later studied for an Executive Masters in Public Policy at the London School of Economics,graduating in 2017. [1]
Between 1994 and 1997,Hall worked for HM Treasury. [1] He joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1997; [1] and headed the Middle East Peace Process Section from 1999 to 2001. [2]
Hall served as the Deputy Head of the Africa Department (Equatorial) from 2001 to 2003. [1] He was appointed an OBE in 2003. [1]
Hall served as the Head of Division for the European Secretariat of the Cabinet Office from 2003 to 2006. [2] He was the Deputy Head of Mission in Bucharest from 2007 to 2008, [3] and served as the Defence Counsellor in the British Delegation to NATO from 2008 to 2012. [3] He headed the Counter Proliferation Department from 2012 to 2015. [1]
Hall led the Spending Review at the Foreign &Commonwealth Office from 2015 to 2016. [3]
On 17 October 2016,Hall was appointed as the British Consul-General to Jerusalem. [2] Hall took up the appointment in August 2017,succeeding Alastair McPhail. [3]
In February 2021,Hall condemned Israeli settlements in the West Bank as "illegal and an obstacle to restarting peace talks". [4]
Hall has been on the Board of Trustees for St. John Eye Hospital Group since September 2017. [5]
Hall married his wife,Karine Hall,in 2005. [1] They have three children,one son and two daughters. [1]

The United Kingdom does not recognise Palestine as a state. The UK has a non-accredited Consulate General in Jerusalem that "represents the UK government in Jerusalem,West Bank,and Gaza",and works on "political,commercial,security and economic interests between the UK and the Palestinian territories". Husam Zomlot became head of the Palestine Mission to the United Kingdom in 2018. The State of Palestine was represented in London by Manuel Hassassian,the Palestinian General Delegate to the United Kingdom between 2005 and 2018. Another former Palestinian General Delegate to the UK was Afif Safieh,who began in that role in 1990. The UK House of Commons voted in favor of recognizing Palestine as a state in 2014,as a contribution towards achieving a negotiated two-state solution. However,the UK government maintained its policy of reserving the right to recognize Palestine bilaterally at a more opportune time for peace efforts.
Alastair David McPhail is a British diplomat who was the United Kingdom's first Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan,appointed in July 2011 when the country gained independence. He had served as consul-general from 16 March 2011. McPhail left South Sudan in March 2013 and was appointed to be British Consul-General in Jerusalem from January 2014. He was replaced in Jerusalem in 2017 and was appointed to be ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia from January 2019. He took up the post on 28 January 2019.
