Philippe Couvreur (born 29 November 1951 in Schaerbeek, Belgium) is a jurist specializing in international law. He served as the Registrar of the International Court of Justice in The Hague (The Netherlands) from 2000-2019

Education

After a classical education at Collège Jean XXIII in Brussels, Philippe Couvreur studied law at Notre-Dame de la Paix University in Namur; at the Université Catholique de Louvain; International and European Law at King's College London; at the Complutense University of Madrid and at the Université Catholique de Louvain. He also studied Thomist philosophy at the Universite Catholique de Louvain. Philippe Couvreur speaks five languages (French, Dutch, English, Spanish and Italian). [1]

Professional career

After working in the legal department of the European Commission, Couvreur has held several legal positions at the International Court of Justice successively since 1982, including the position of Principal Legal Secretary (Head of the Legal Department).[ citation needed ] [2]

He served as the Registrar of the International Court of Justice from February 2000 [3] until his retirement in the summer of 2019, and was re-elected twice during his tenure. [4] [5]

He officially retired on 1 July 2019. [6]

Couvreur has taught European and International Law in numerous universities and academies:

Philippe Couvreur is also a Corresponding Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, as well as a member of various other learned societies. He holds various decorations, notably including Commander by Number of the Orden de Isabel la Católica (Spain) and of the Orden del Mérito Civil (Spain), Officer of the Légion d'Honneur (France), as well as Grand Officer in the Order of Leopold (Belgium).

Philippe Gautier is a Belgian lawyer. He currently serves as the registrar of the International Court of Justice. Born in Bujumbura, Burundi, Gautier received his license to practice law in 1982, and served in various capacities in the arbitration of international disputes.

Roberto Córdova was a Mexican jurist, international judge, and diplomat. Córdova served as a judge for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) between 1955 and 1964. He was the second Mexican to serve as an ICJ judge, following Isidro Fabela.
