The Philippines women's national handball team is the national team of the Philippines. It takes part in international handball competitions and is governed by the Philippine Handball Federation. The team is also known by its moniker, Amigas. [1]

Handball is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins.

The Philippine Handball Federation is the national governing body for Handball in the Philippines and is a voting member of the Philippine Olympic Committee since 2011. It is accredited by the International Handball Federation.

History

The national team made its international debut at the 2013 Southeast Asian Women's Handball Championships in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, which was held in December 2013. The team, coached by former national basketball and fencing champion Joanna Franquelli was formed just two months before the tournament. [1] [2]

Ubon Ratchathani is one of the four major cities of Isan, also known as the "big four of Isan". The city is on the Mun River in the southeast of the Isan region of Thailand. It is known as Ubon (อุบลฯ) for short. The name means 'royal lotus city'. The provincial seal features a pond with a lotus flower and leaves in a circular frame. Ubon was the administrative centre of Ubon Ratchathani Province. As of 2006, the Ubon urban area had a population of about 200,000. This included 85,000 in Thetsaban Nakhon Ubon Ratchathani, 30,000 each in Thetsaban Mueang Warin Chamrap and Thetsaban Tambon Kham Yai, 24,000 in Thetsaban Tambon Saen Suk, 10,000 in each of Thetsaban Tambon Pathum and Tambon Kham Nam Saep, and 6,000 in Thetsaban Tambon Ubon.

Joanna Franquelli is a Filipino former basketball player and fencer who is the head coach of the Philippines women's national handball team as of January 2017.

Later on, Gintong Alay was revived and became the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) which was established in 1990.

The Philippine women's national volleyball team is the national volleyball team of the Philippines. The country is ranked 117 as of October 21, 2018. Its highest achievement was in 1974 when it qualified for the FIVB World Championship, where it placed 18th. It is governed by Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas (LVPI) since 2015.
