Philip Spies (born 21 May 1970) is a retired South African javelin thrower. Primarily a provincial cricketer at school and South African Country District level, chose athletics over cricket. The arrival in South Africa of American World Record Holder, Tom Petranoff (in 1989) was a big deciding factor for Spies with regards to choosing athletics over cricket. Petranoff became an integral part of Spies' athletics career and still regards Petranoff as being one of the great javelin throwers of all time considering that Petranoff held two separate world records: 99.72 m with the "Old" model and 85.38 m (at the time a WR) with the "new" model. He became South African Schools champion at 17 years of age and achieved South African Schools Colors in 1988.Was ranked third in the world in 1988 as 17 year old throwing 72,24 meters. Versatile sportsman who played on the SA Tennis Union circuit in 1990/ 1991 and reached a best golf handicap of 05 in 2000.

Won the bronze medal at the 1992 African Championships, [1] the silver medal at the 1993 African Championships, [1] finished eighth at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, [2] and won the silver medal at the 1995 All-Africa Games. [3] He also competed at the 1993 World Championships and the 1995 World Championships without reaching the final. [4] [5]

His personal best throw was 84.02 metres, achieved in April 1995 in Pietersburg. [6] Unofficially threw 89.10 m in Harare,Zimbabwe in 1995, throw not ratified. Competed in more than 45 countries worldwide in the colours of Rand Afrikaans University and representing South Africa.

Qualified Athletics South Africa Level 3 Javelin coach. Certified SAFA Level 1 soccer coach, certified SAMHA level 1 hockey coach. Qualified sports massage therapist.

Gym equipment consultant for Evolve Fitness Africa together with former pole vaulters, MD Theo Beyers and former world No.1 Okkert Brits - 6,03 meters PB. All three specialize in High Performance Centres and Olympic spec equipment such as Eleiko, Life Fitness,Hammer Strength, Cybex, TRX etc..Most top facilities in Southern Africa are supplied by Evolve Fitness SA.

Spent 15 years with Supersport Television doing live athletics commentary; IAAF International Events , Olympic Games, Golden League etc.. together with Nebraska middle distance star Jean Verster.

Thomas Alan Petranoff is a retired American track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He held the world record from May 1983 to July 1984; his 99.72 m throw was almost the length of an American football field (360 feet. During his career, he was a silver medalist at the World Championships in 1983 and represented the United States at the Summer Olympics in 1984 and 1988. He transferred to South Africa in the 1990s and was twice a winner at the African Championships. His personal best with the new implement javelin is 89.16 m. In the final years of his career, he returned to the United States and won a medal at the 1999 Pan American Games.

Uwe Hohn is a retired German track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He is the only athlete to throw a javelin 100 metres or more, with his world record of 104.80 m. A new javelin design was implemented in 1986 and the records had to be restarted, thus Hohn's mark became an "eternal world record". After his retirement from competition, Hohn became a coach and since 1999 he has worked for SC Potsdam, the successor of ASK Vorwärts Potsdam, where he started his career as a sportsman. He coached Indian track and field athlete Neeraj Chopra, who won the gold in the men's javelin throw at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo.

Dragan Perić is a Serbian retired shot putter who occasionally competed in the discus throw. He holds the Serbian records in both events. He represented Yugoslavia/Serbia and Montenegro in four consecutive Summer Olympics from 1992 to 2004, in eight World Championships from 1991 to 2005 and three European Championships from 1990 to 1998.
