Pio Lava Boccardo (also known as Pio Lava and Pio Alessandro Lava Boccardo) (Alessandria, Kingdom of Italy, 31 May 1902; Caracas, Venezuela, 16 August 1971) was an Italian-Venezuelan zootechnician and wildlife breeder.
He was director of the zoological parks of Maracaibo and Las Delicias (Maracay) and founding director of the Parque Zoológico El Pinar, the first zoological park in Caracas, in 1945.
He was born on May 31, 1902, in Alessandria della Paglia, Piedmont region, during the period of the Kingdom of Italy. His parents were Pietro Lava and Maria Boccardo.
As a teenager he was part of the Italian diaspora that sailed to the Americas after the First World War, promoted mainly by the economic crisis of the interwar period, the rise of Fascism in Italy with Benito Mussolini as the main leader, and the promise of great opportunities for personal growth in the New World. Upon arriving in Venezuela in 1921, he settled in Maracaibo at a time of great economic boom in the oil industry.
He contracted nuptials in Maracaibo on October 14, 1931, with Panamanian Dolores Sánchez Martín, from a distinguished family of Spanish immigrants formed by Luis Sánchez Caicedo and Elvira Martín. He procreated two daughters: María Elvira (born in Maracaibo in 1932), and Luisa Antonia (born in Maracaibo in 1935); and two sons: Antonio Pedro (born in Maracay in 1937) and Pedro Alejandro (born in Maracay in 1940).
Between 1935 and 1945 he was the director of the Maracaibo and Las Delicias (Maracay) zoos. The latter was originally built to house the personal collection of Juan Vicente Gómez in a section of the Hacienda Sabana de Paja (later called Las Delicias) in 1915. [1]
His wife Dolores Sánchez Martín died suddenly from undetermined causes, on May 11, 1943, in Maracay. [2]
On August 13, 1945, he participated in the inauguration of the El Pinar Zoological Park in Caracas as director of the new enclosure intended mainly for the exhibition of local wildlife specimens. The land where this new zoological garden was installed was part of the Hacienda La Vaquera, a property previously owned by Juan Vicente Gómez which had been confiscated in 1935. [3]
On June 13, 1950, the Government of the United States of Venezuela issued the decree by which it issued a naturalization letter and granted him Venezuelan citizenship. That act determined his resignation to his Italian citizenship.
He died on August 16, 1971, at the age of 69 in the Military Hospital of Caracas as a consequence of a stroke.
Juan Vicente Gómez Chacón was a Venezuelan military general, politician and de facto ruler of Venezuela from 1908 until his death in 1935. He was president on three occasions during this time, ruling through puppet governments in between.

Carlos Raúl Villanueva Astoul was a Venezuelan modernist architect. Raised in Europe, Villanueva went for the first time to Venezuela when he was 28 years old. He was involved in the development and modernization of Caracas, Maracay and other cities across the country. Among his works are El Silencio Redevelopment which included 7797 apartments and 207 shop premises and the Ciudad Universitaria, the main campus of the Central University of Venezuela. The Campus was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 2000.
Henri Pittier National Park is the oldest national park in Venezuela, originally created in 1937 under the name of Rancho Grande by decree of President Eleazar López Contreras. In 1953 the park was renamed in honor of Henri Pittier, a distinguished Swiss geographer, botanist and ethnologist, who arrived in Venezuela in 1917, classified more than 30,000 plants in the country and devoted many years studying the flora and fauna in the park.
Italian Venezuelans are Venezuelan-born citizens who are fully or partially of Italian descent, whose ancestors were Italians who emigrated to Venezuela during the Italian diaspora, or Italian-born people in Venezuela. Italians were among the largest groups of European immigrants to settle in the country. The El Pinar Zoo Also Zoological Park of El Pinar Is the first zoological garden of Caracas, Venezuela inaugurated 13 August 1945 under the presidency of Isaías Medina Angarita. El pinar zoo is located in El Paraiso Parish in the former grounds of the La Vaquera hacienda, which was owned by Juan Vicente Gómez. The State took possession of it in 1935. It occupies an area of 7 hectares.
The Las Delicias Zoo Also Zoological Park of Las Delicias Is an urban zoological garden located at 400 meters above sea level in the northern end of the city of Maracay, Aragua State in Venezuela with native species from the Cordillera region and the rest of Venezuela. The zoo operates under Declaration No. 655 published in Official Gazette No. 32007 of June 17, 1980.
The Loefling Zoo Also Zoological Park Loefling Is a publicly owned zoological garden located southwest of Cachamay Park, in Ciudad Guayana, part of the Bolivar State in the Venezuelan Guayana region. It received its name in honor of the Swedish botanist Pehr Löfling. He was one of the first to make the fauna and flora of this region known to science, and he died near Ciudad Guayana.
The Zulia Metropolitan Zoo is a zoo established in 1973. It spans about 40 hectares and is located at kilometer 10 of the La Cañada highway in the municipality of San Francisco south of Maracaibo, the capital of Zulia in Venezuela. Its administration and management since 2008 is the responsibility of the Zulia state government.
José Lino Vaamonde Valencia was a Spanish architect who played a leading role in preserving the nation's artistic treasures during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). Following the civil war he went into exile in Venezuela, where he became the head architect of the Shell subsidiary and developed a range of buildings including service stations, oil camps, colleges and office buildings.
Pedro Trebbau was a German-born Venezuelan zoologist. His career was characterized by the promotion and preservation of Venezuelan wildlife and nature. His research and collaboration with the herpetologist Peter Pritchard produced the still-extant reference book on The Turtles of Venezuela.

Juan Pablo Isidoro Guanipa Villalobos is a Venezuelan lawyer and politician who currently serves as deputy and First Vice President of the National Assembly, leader of the Justice First political party and former governor of Zulia. He was a presidential candidate in the 2018 elections until boycott. Guanipa is the regional coordinator of the Justice First party in Zulia and chairs the Maracaibo Posible foundation.
