Pipe Dream is the student newspaper of Binghamton University (State University of New York at Binghamton) in Vestal, N.Y. Content is published online throughout the week at bupipedream.com, as well as in print every Tuesday.

Contents

Printed as a tabloid until spring 2012, Pipe Dream now prints as a broadsheet paper with full-color front and back pages.

Pipe Dream is one of the few student newspapers in the country that is and always has been entirely student-run, without the supervision or assistance of an advisor. Though there is no journalism school at Binghamton University, Pipe Dream was named in 2010 as one of the nation's top college newspapers by the Princeton Review . [1]

History: The Free Word on Campus

Pipe Dream was first published in the form of The Colonial News on November 22, 1946, the same year as the founding of Triple Cities Colleges, the forebear of Binghamton University. The Colonial News' first editors wrote:

This is a new paper in a new college. It is up to you, all of you, to insure its success. It will reflect your views and opinions, those of the aggregate student body. Primarily as a news organ it will reflect your achievements—and your failures.

The paper's name was changed to Pipe Dream in 1970 in protest of the Vietnam War.

Pipe Dream printed a bi-weekly paper until the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, officially becoming a weekly newspaper in spring 2023.

Circulation

The newspaper is distributed at Binghamton University's main campus in Vestal, New York, and at several spots in Downtown Binghamton, including the newly built University Downtown Center. All copies are distributed openly and are free to the public.

Pipe Dream also publishes special issues for finals week, summer orientation, the annual Spring Fling celebration, and the NCAA America East Men's Basketball Tournament, among others.

Alumni

Alumni editors and correspondents of Pipe Dream have worked for and are currently working for some of the nation's top media outlets, including the four major New York papers: The New York Times, New York Post, New York Daily News and Newsday.

Tony Kornheiser, '70, now a famous ESPN personality, was once The Colonial News' sports editor. [2]
Chris Giarrusso, '97, illustrator of Marvel Comics' Mini Marvels series is a former Fun Page Editor. [3]
Kerry Kantin, Editor 1997-1999, went on to become a Vice President at S&P Global Markets.
Robert Greenberger, '80, is an American writer and editor known for his work on Comics Scene, Starlog, Weekly World News, and Hellboy II, and for the executive positions he held at both Marvel Comics and DC Comics.

Fred Handte Memorial Award

Established in 1988 in memory of Fred Handte, 1987 editor-in-chief of the student newspaper Pipe Dream. This award is given to a junior or senior involved with Pipe Dream. [12]

Criticism

In 2005, Pipe Bomb, Pipe Dream's annual April Fool's edition, ran a joke story about a fictitious campus van service that parodied "Safe Ride," a free late-night shuttle on campus. Activists stole most of the issues soon after the papers hit newsstands and demanded that the Binghamton University administration either force Pipe Dream's editors to undergo sensitivity training or revoke the group's Student Association-chartered status. (Without S.A.-chartered status, Pipe Dream would have no longer been an officially sanctioned student group, possibly leading to it being evicted from its campus office space and having to pay its own media insurance premiums.) In the end, no action was taken.

The Daily Tar Heel (DTH) is the independent student newspaper of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It was founded on February 23, 1893, and became a daily newspaper in 1929. The Arizona Daily Wildcat is a student newspaper serving the University of Arizona. It was founded in 1899 as the Sage Green and Silver. Previous names include Arizona Weekly Life, University Life, Arizona Life and Arizona Wildcat. Its distribution is within the university and the Tucson, Arizona metropolitan area. The Old Gold & Black is the student-run newspaper of Wake Forest University, named after the school's colors. The newspaper was founded in 1916 and is published in print every other Thursday, with the exception of school holidays and exam weeks. The Old Gold & Black's office is located on the fifth floor of the Benson University Center on Wake Forest's main campus.

The Spinnaker is the official student magazine, 24/7 website, radio station, and TV station of the University of North Florida (UNF). Flyer News, also known as "fn", is the independent student newspaper of the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. It was first published October 21, 1959 and is now published in print monthly while classes are in session, for a total of nine issues per academic year. Currently, 4,000 copies of each issue are distributed throughout campus. Each issue is typically 12 pages long and includes four sections: news, arts and entertainment, opinions and sports. The Spectrum is the student-run newspaper of North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. The Spectrum has been in publication since 1896. Its oversight committee is the Board of Student Publications (BOSP) made up of a rotating group of four faculty members and five students and receives a portion of the student activity fee as a means to subsidize its production. The Board Of Student Publications is also responsible for hiring and firing the editor in chief.

<i>The Merciad</i>

The Merciad is the student newspaper at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania. The paper was founded in 1929. In 2007 the newspaper's slogan became "If you don't want it printed...don't let it happen," a slogan that is the same as that of the Aspen Daily News, however, the slogan was removed by Editor-in-Chief Mathew Anderson and the paper's staff in 2013 after being deemed unprofessional. It is a free tabloid-sized newspaper published every Wednesday while classes are in session, with the exception of the week before finals. The newspaper is the recipient of a "Best of Show" award presented February 2008, by the Associated Collegiate Press.

The FSView & Florida Flambeau is a for-profit newspaper owned by the Gannett Company that covers the on-campus events, happenings, and trends of the Florida State University as well as concerts, museum and art exhibits, movies, literature and poetry readings, and other events from the larger Tallahassee community. In early August 2006, the FSView made national news as being the first privately owned, college-oriented newspaper to be bought by a major newspaper chain.

The Bard Free Press is a monthly college newspaper published by students of Bard College, a private liberal arts college in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. The paper has a circulation of about 2,000 and is the only printed student newspaper at Bard. The paper was founded in 2000, by former student editors of The Observer, Bard's newspaper at the time. The Free Press and the Bard Observer merged in 2008.
