V Piyush Sethia, [3] better known as Piyush Manush, [4] is an Indian environmental activist.

Activism

Along with few others in 2010, he formed the Salem Citizen's Forum, a collective of urban citizens that engaged in people welfare activities and improving public delivery systems. [5] The Forum adopted the Mookaneri Lake, a 58-acre located at the foot of the Shevaroy Hills, was conserved from massive pollution. [6] [7] He initiated and has been instrumental in reviving water bodies such as Ammapettai Lake, Kundukkal Lake, Ismailkhan Lake, Arisipalayam Pond and Pallappatti well etc. across districts of Salem and Dharmapuri. [8] He also opposed commercial mining in Kanjamalai hills and stood against encroachments and land mafia. [9] He, along with others, received the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year award on behalf people of Chennai in 2015. [10]

Coop forest

He created the "Coop Forest" in 2009, an initiative for forest preservation, on 1.5 acres of hilly land in Dharmapuri which quickly expanded to 150 acres. [11] Over the years, the Coop Forest has turned into a home for bamboo (Piyush has planted 40,000 bamboo saplings) and guava, lemon, vilvam, neem, rosewood, pungam, custard apple, jack fruit, silk cotton, Singapore cherry, chiku, mango, and other varieties of plants and trees. [12] The Coop Forest experiments with finding alternatives to plastic, steel and cement. [13]

Arrest

On 8 July 2016, Manush was charged with non-bailable sections along with two other activists for protesting against the construction of the Muluvadi Gate over-bridge in Salem by Southern Railway. [14] [15] The arrest caused an uproar on social networks, with some of his co-workers calling for his release. [16] While jailed, Manush was kept in solitary confinement and allegedly tortured, according to his friends and family. [15] He was released on conditional bail on 21 July. [17] [18]

On 18 June 2018, Manush was arrested while protesting the proposed 270-kilometre super highway connecting Salem and Chennai. He was arrested with Actor Mansoor Ali Khan for a speech made by him, 40 days ago in a Village in Salem district. [19] After his arrest, an uproar has broken out in Tamil Nadu, many of the environmentalists and activist has condemned the act and the chief opposition party DMK's working president MK Stalin also issued a statement saying that the DMK will conduct a statewide protest if the police do not stop harassing the people. [20]

Attack by BJP

On 25 August 2019, Piyush Manush visited the Salem BJP office to "ask their thoughts on the economy and the Revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir," as well as to confront them about threats he reportedly got from BJP members. Piyush was live streaming as he went to the office and got into an argument with the BJP workers; the stream ended with BJP workers garlanding him with chappals and attacking him, causing him to drop his phone. Other recordings that aired on television afterwards showed BJP members attacking Piyush Manush in the sight of multiple police officers who tried to stop the attack. Politicians and activists showed their support for Piyush Manush and criticized the BJP for the violent attack as the videos circulated on social media. [21] [22]

The twelfth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 10 May 2001. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led front won the elections and its general secretary, J. Jayalalithaa was sworn in as Chief Minister, even though she could not legally run as MLA in this election. She was unanimously nominated as Chief Minister by her party and was ready to serve her second term. But due to criminal and corruption charges from her first term, on 21 September 2001, a five-judge constitutional bench of the Supreme Court of India ruled in a unanimous verdict that "a person who is convicted for a criminal offense and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years cannot be appointed the Chief Minister of a State under Article 164 (1) read with (4) and cannot continue to function as such". Thereby, the bench decided that "in the appointment of Dr. J. Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister there has been a clear infringement of a Constitutional provision and that a writ of quo warranto must issue". In effect, her appointment as Chief Minister was declared null and invalid with retrospective effect. Therefore, technically, she was not the Chief Minister in the period between 14 May 2001 and 21 September 2001. After her resignation on 21 September 2001, she put in O. Panneerselvam, as the official 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, until she could clear up the charges from her first term, so she can take up the mantle of Chief Minister officially, on 2 March 2002.

Naam Tamilar Katchi is a Tamil nationalist party in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry. The party is known to revere Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam founder Velupillai Prabhakaran, whose image is prominently displayed at party events and gatherings. Originally founded in 1958, it was revived in 2010.

In the 2012 Dharmapuri violence, a Vanniyar caste mob set fire to about 268 Dalit houses in Natham, old and new Kondampatti and Annanagar Dalit colonies in Dharmapuri district, Tamil Nadu on 8 November 2012. The violence occurred after a Vanniyar girl from Sellankottai village, and a Dalit boy, from the neighbouring Dalit colony of Natham, fled due to parental opposition to get married, a caste panchayat held on the morning of 7 November by leaders from both communities ruled that the girl be returned to her family. Distraught at her decision to stay with her husband, her father allegedly committed suicide. The discovery of his body later that day is said to have provoked a 1,500-strong mob to rampage through Natham and two smaller Dalit settlements, Kondampatti and Anna Nagar, where it set ablaze over 200 houses, damaged at least 50 others, and allegedly looted valuables and cash worth lakhs of rupees. The mob rampaged for four hours and was brought under control after arrest of 90 men and an additional deployment of 1000 policemen.

C. P. Radhakrishnan an Indian politician, is from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected to the Lok Sabha twice from Coimbatore. He is also the former state president of the party for Tamil Nadu. Presently he is the National Executive Member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and was appointed the Kerala BJP Prabhari (In-Charge) by the party's high command. He was Chairman of the All India Coir Board from 2016 to 2019, which comes under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).

Mookaneri Lake, also called Kannankurichi Lake, is a lake in Kannankurichi, in the Salem taluk of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, that covers an area of 23.5 hectares. It is located to the south of the Shevaroy Hills, and is a major water body of Salem. The lake is fed by rainfall from the surrounding area, including the hills surrounding Yercaud, which flows into the lake via the Puthu Yeri and Kothukaran Odai streams.
