Platform2 was an international volunteering programme for young people in the United Kingdom. It was run by a coalition of Christian Aid and BUNAC, and was funded by the Department for International Development of the UK government. Volunteers took part in 10-week community projects in countries such as South Africa, Ghana, India, Nepal and Peru. [1]

What was Platform2?

Platform2 was an international volunteering scheme for 18- to 25-year-olds from the UK who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford to visit a developing country and get involved with global issues of justice and poverty. It was funded by UKaid from the Department for International Development and run by Christian Aid and BUNAC. [2]

Platform2 sent volunteers to India, Nepal, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa or Peru for 10 weeks in an attempt to improve both the living conditions of communities in the developing world but also volunteers' understanding of the issues surrounding development and poverty. [2]

Who was Platform2?

Platform2 was funded by The Department for International Development (DFID) and is the part of the UK government that manages Britain's aid to poor countries and works to get rid of extreme poverty. [3]

Platform2's UK operations were run by Christian Aid which is a development agency with a mission to expose the scandal of poverty, help the poorest of the poor and work to change the structures which give rise to poverty and promote sustainable development. It works with people of all and no faiths, and has a track record in the UK of working both within and without faith settings. [4]

Platform2's overseas operations was run by BUNAC, a provider of volunteering and work abroad opportunities. BUNAC is a not for profit company and its primary objective is to encourage interest and understanding in overseas cultures among British students and young people; and to encourage interest and understanding in Britain among students and young people who travel to Britain on reciprocal programmes. The Department for International Development (DFID) was the government department of the United Kingdom responsible for administering foreign aid. The goal of the department was "to promote sustainable development and eliminate world poverty". DFID was headed by the United Kingdom's Secretary of State for International Development. The position was last held between 13 February 2020 and the department's abolishment on 2 September 2020 by Anne-Marie Trevelyan. In a 2010 report by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC), DFID was described as "an international development leader in times of global crisis". The UK aid logo is often used to publicly acknowledge DFID's development programmes are funded by UK taxpayers.

Tzedek is a UK-based registered charity organisation which aims to provide a Jewish response to the problem of extreme global poverty. Registered as a charity in 1993, Tzedek has a number of overseas development programmes, working closely with local NGOs to alleviate extreme poverty in Northern Ghana and Northeast & Southeast India. As well as supporting local NGOs within these regions, Tzedek aims to develop the leadership skills of young Jewish leaders within the community to provide a long-term, sustainable solution to global poverty.

International Citizen Service (ICS) is a global volunteering programme. It is aimed at young people, and sees volunteers from the UK working alongside volunteers from the developing world. ICS works with projects that have specifically requested help, with emphasis placed on measures that combat poverty. Funded by the Department for International Development, ICS is led by VSO, in partnership with a number of development organisations.

PHASE is a partnership between several international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) registered in Austria, Nepal, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA). The organisations specialise in improving health and education services and livelihood opportunities for disadvantaged populations and most of this work takes place in Nepal. The acronym, PHASE, stands for "Practical Help Achieving Self Empowerment" and describes the working ethic of the organisations.

To manage its activities, the Cities Alliance operates a multi-donor fund with UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), as host and trustee. Different members provide direction, financing and advocacy. Cities Alliance aims to deliver solutions to urban poverty.

BUNAC

BUNAC is an organisation that enables people to explore the world through work abroad and travel programmes. Bunac Travel Services Ltd was acquired by STA Travel in 2011, which included the 'BUNAC' brand and all associated work and volunteer abroad programme brand names. Previous to this, the company was owned by the non-profit British Universities North America Club in order to provide work and volunteer programmes for their members. Due to this, the term 'BUNAC' now refers exclusively to STA Travel owned products, and not the non-profit Club.
